I disagree. I don't see it as Goodreads job to sell books. It's your book, it's your job to sell it.

John Hood (john_hood) | 2 comments Hello, everyone. John Hood here. In addition to my responsibilities as a foundation executive and journalist, I’ve been writing books since 1996. My first seven were all nonfiction — works of economic, political, and family history. My latest book, Mountain Folk , is quite a departure for me: a historical-fantasy novel set during the American Revolution. It’s Book One in a planned series, The Folklore Cycle, that will span much of American history and mix real-life persons and events with fantasy elements brought in from European, African, and Native American folklore. I’ve enjoyed my time on Goodreads and look forward to more interactions with readers and fellow authors.

I have had to work hard and build up a following, but I have had good results. The best part of being active on Goodreads is the connections that will last through future books.

Paul F. | 55 comments Steven wrote: "Paul wrote: "Goodreads needs to come up with some ideas for promoting books and making them STAND OUT from the crowd. I'm not aware of any positive results from simply posting about a novel that yo..."

I DO see it as Goodreads' job to sell books. If that isn't it's job, then what is this platform for, and particularly this "Introduce yourself" thread?

message 18561: by Paul (new)

Paul F. | 55 comments I see the purpose of platforms like Goodreads and similar (e.g. Booksie, Book Cave, Litsy, etc.) as connecting authors with prospective readers/buyers. In my mind, that is how an author sells his/her books, as opposed to, for example, an author buying a whole passel of his/her own books and then trying to sell them on ebay, etc.

message 18562: by Paul (new)

Paul F. | 55 comments Aspiring authors with a hell of a lot of spendable money can also try advertising. I once spent $650 for three months of magazine advertising--which resulted in a grand total of five books sold. Another magazine was ready to charge me--I'm not exaggerating--$800 for one ad, for one month. I just don't have that kind of money. And as for hiring a publicist--get ready to fork over thousands per month for a publicist's services. I have certainly tried on my own to attract the attention of radio and TV interviews and newspapers--with no responses at all.

M. Johnson | 5 comments Peach and Plum M. Johnson

Hey Everybody, I write children's books, both picture and middle grade fiction, and I consider my latest indie publication, Peach and Plum, a magnum-opus in children's literature.

I am constantly ISO of middle grade readers who LOVE reading to see if they'd read my book, but it's been kind of a challenge. Maybe someone here in Goodreads will give it a chance.

I have to discover all the options and functions. But I'm happy to be on this platform now. Thank you for that!
I write my books in German language, but I also want to publish them in English and Portuguese. ... I'm 18 years old (and this for 30 years now). I'm married and I have a daughter. I play volleyball, love cooking and baking and good movies.
I look forward to talk with all about books and writing and to share some experiences about marketing, publishing, and and and

... and Sorry for my bad English, I never joined any english-classes at school.

Marion | 3 comments Hi all,
I am new to goodreads and am hoping to drum up some interest in my writing.
I have been writing for a couple of years now, having ignored the muse for many years.
I love writing, although it can be equally frustrating as it is fulfilling.
I have published my first series of novels set in the same universe and have three more different books on the boil. I mainly write present day fantasy - Fae in a modern setting or Medieval Fantasy. I am actively looking for feedback on a couple of chapters I have up for review on goodreads of my latest - The Woodsman and the Runaway.
The first in my series of present day fantasy is available for free this weekend on Kindle - The Levden King.
Please check out my author page: Marion Walker.
Any feedback is gratefully received, positive and negative
Thanks for reading
M

The book is historical fiction, about young Rosa Kerker who immigrated from Switzerland in 1866 and settled in a small town near Minneapolis. Heartwarming story about she, her family, and her struggle in determining her vocation. Rosa faces many conflicts in her pursuit, not without those close to her heaving advice that suit themselves more than Rosa. message 18584: by BRIAN (last edited Jul 01, 2021 04:23PM) (new)

BRIAN DEMPSEY | 1 comments Good evening everyone.
My name is Brian W. Dempsey ( emphasis on the middle initial, I think there is another author here with the same name) and I've just joined the author's club here, and published my first full length novel entitled Order of Dissension. It can be categorized as Dystopian/Adventure, but contains many elements of other genres. Over the years my passion became philosophy and occult studies after many years of a more traditional upbringing as a Southern Baptist. In the midst of some radical changes in my life, I envisioned a different twist on an very traditional Christian prophecy, the second coming of Christ. Like many things in our world, things could be much different. The media lies, history is altered, and perhaps CERN has thrust us into an entirely different universe. A second coming could be quite different than we were led to believe.
My mind races with ideas for stories, but this one took me over a year to complete and six years to publish, as it sat dormant in my computer awaiting the proper time. The bulk was written in the front seat of my work truck while operating cranes in the oil and gas fields.
I'm simply looking to connect with authors, likeminded friends, mentors and others for reviews, ideas, and chitchat. I'm not here to peddle my book, those chips will fall where the universe allows. For now, I'm happy to simply get the book out and begin the next project. My Blogspot is old but still active, my website is up but I need to update it, and I can be reached at ancientsfire13@gmail.com . The social media is a bit overwhelming for a 51 y/o, so this is a work in progress. I have them all basically.
As for the book I would welcome any and all questions, feedback, help, or criticism. :)

Hi Ty. I'd like to help. Where are you in the writing process? Are you at the beginning, middle, or closing down the story? Try writing down a series of WHAT questions. For example: What will make the reader pull for the main character. What will make the reader want to climb in the story and throw rocks at another character? Then answer your WHAT questions. Good luck. Nora Wolfenbarger - Thriller author of - The Promise.
