Hello Nancy,

I like your specific request. I do not have my own experience of being behind bars, but some experience from other people is included a little in my book. I think it may interest you.

Here is the short excerpts:

"If I let her die, then I killed her, laying on his plank bed,

plenty of free-of-drinking time to reconsider the way he was
treating her. ..."
"His intermittent thoughts appeared and disappeared like

"When the inmate’s eyes met his attorney’s, in the glance of
the moment, the latter one realized the futility of his endeavors.
Alexander was definitely up to something. Sure, it was
not the best day to have a conversation with him, after what
had just happened to his wife. ..."

Dean Miller | 7 comments Hi, I'm Dean Miller. I always use my middle initial (as in Dean G. Miller) because there is a well known author with the name, Dean Miller. I have been writing miscellaneous tracts most of my adult life but began to write seriously after I retired. So far, I have written two Christian books, "Jesus Says" and "The Wise Men and the Star." I am finishing up a third, and just published a small book of poetry, "Allsides." I have several other books in various stages of completion, but whether I'll ever get them completed is problematic. We'll see.

Hello Don,
I agree the publishing process is stressful and challenging. I too just want to write stories...they contain a piece of our heart... The truth is in the end, you have successfully written a book !! Others opinions and perceptions are not in our control. Tell yourself that you put your dream into action and succeeded !!

Valda Taurus | 14 comments Hello and Happy New Year everyone!

I hope you are all staying safe and positive. My name is Valda Taurus. I worked on my book as if it were a literary fiction - nourishing every character, listening to their stories even as they came to me in the late night hour:) This book is for mature adults. The key concepts of my story are finding your purpose in life and overcoming the old feelings of guilt and remorse. From self-accusation to self-forgiveness: life is complicated, so don't make it even worse. You cannot change your past, but you can live your life now as if tomorrow is your last day.

I agree with you, Don, that much of the publishing process can be off-putting. I have a completed poetry book, all ready to publish -- but since I’m a first-time author, I was unaware of the daunting marketing work that lies ahead. I was on-top-of-the-world with excitement at having finished and formatted my book and created an author website. Then, I discover I have to try to establish a social media presence; and blog; and get countless reviews (upfront) before I can go any further. It has put me in a limbo of disenchantment myself. You are correct in saying that we all should congratulate ourselves for the amount of work that goes into writing and producing a book, regardless of reviews, and that the ultimate measure of it is how it makes the reader feel.

Sarah (sarahjane) | 12 comments Hello,
My name is Sarah and I've just recently self-published my first book though I have a long way to go......made some rookie mistakes along the way.

I've been looking in this group for a thread for authors with general questions, like advice and tips from other author's etc....
For example I'd like to ask about posting jpeg images in various sizes of my book cover in a thread using html code, but I've been trying for days with no luck. I asked in the GR librarians group and they told me it wasn't a librarian issue. I know I can link my book in a thread, I'm doing changes to my book cover in a book cover review thread, so I want to post various changes to get their feedback.

Also I have some questions regarding sending my manuscript to an editor, copyright and possibly other things I may not be aware of etc.......

Can someone point me in the right direction please : )

first thing you will need to do is send to a reviewer and have them find mistakes that you possibly made, then that person will tell you what needs to be corrected.

I am waiting for the reviewers to get back to me, the first one is due on a blog soon. As the book is already published on Amazon what I'm wondering is if I send the book to the editor who wants a copy they can change and edit themselves. I shouldn't have anything to worry about as I own the digital copyright? Can someone just change the names of characters and story slightly then suddenly it's a new book? I've heard horror stories, it's a jungle out there.

I'm finding the process quite daunting and don't want to make any mistakes.

I see what you mean, and I think its the authors job to keep the characters name and how the story goes, if the editor does the changing, then its no longer your story but its theirs. As a reviewer to so many authors, its my job to tell them the mistakes that they make, paperback, hardcover, or digital, and sometimes the author agrees with me. The editors tend to make the nightmares for the authors by rearranging the story to see if others would like it, when really I prefer the authors side of the story.,

That is certainly a scary thought, someone stealing the premise of your story as their own. Unfortunately not all of us are grammatically perfect which is why we need editor's, if you can afford one that is........

Thanks for the advice, I'll do some more research on the matter.

Dyon Whiteley | 1 comments Hello Everyone and happy new year! Here is to a (hopefully) better 2021.

Although I am a relatively slow reader, I started reading fantasy novels a few years back and have been hooked since. Action, battles and unique landscapes really capture my imagination and let it run wild. So I would greatly appreciate any recommendations for stories that fit those genres.

I also write too. Last october I self-published my first dystopian fantasy novel; Flame of the Fallen. The story focuses on a father trying to reclaim his son and how the labours he must overcome, plunge a kingdom into chaos. If you like action and a real gritty character struggle, you will enjoy this. Please feel free to give it read and leave a review.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Michael Ginsberg (michael_ginsberg) | 1 comments Hi all:

I'm Mike Ginsberg, I am an avid reader (20+ books a year, heavy into history) and I finally took the plunge and wrote my first novel. It's called DEBT BOMB and it's coming out on July 1, 2021. It's about a national debt crisis engineered by American politicians who are secretly Chinese spies. The heroine is an accountant who stops them. It's based on my years of working in the government and in politics, so there's a lot of "real-worldness" about it, although it is fiction. You can find out more about me and my book at michaeleginsberg.com.

Pleased to be a new member of the group!

The function of an alpha reader is to give general feedback, while a beta reader hopefully might spot plot holes and inconsistencies. If you're lucky and they're very good, you may get feedback on other issues.
The function of an editor is to edit, which may include moving text around so that it flows better, pointing out final inconsistencies and anachronisms (yes, in fixing something you can introduce a further mistake!), but it isn't to change the story - if they want to do that, find another editor. They may well give advice on removal of adverbs and adjectives, which a lot of publishers regard as lazy writing - to me, it's using shorthand for a note to yourself, and means you'll have to fix it later! Often there are mixed tenses or inconsistencies in point of view, and an editor can help here, as can alpha or beta readers.
The function of a proof-reader is to check the grammar, spelling and punctuation. Your proof-reader should see your work before you send it to the printer/your publisher, but not before that, as you may rework it and then need to have it proof-read again. They won't always pick up every error, but if the error rate is under 1% your book will be a great read.
The whole point about all of this is that if you don't have the skills, experience, time or inclination to do these jobs yourself, then you buy those skills in. If you aren't good at drawing or design, why would you make your own book cover? So it is with feedback, editing or proof-reading. Another person will pick up errors you are blind to because you've gone over your work so many times - they will bring a pair of fresh eyes to the job. I hope this helps all those new authors who are crying out for somewhere to discuss all this and get some advice. It used to be that editors at publishing houses would "edit" as per my definition above. In these days of huge multinational publishers they simply don't have time to do those things. So it really is worth hiring someone with the skills and experience to help you out before submitting, if you want your books to be the best they can for your readers. Good luck!
