Katherine Owen | 3 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Katherine Owen. I'm the author of two novels in the genre of women's fiction: Seeing Julia and Not To Us. Both books are available in trade paperback print and e-books at the usual online retailers (think of Amazon, Barnes and Noble). I am busy writing/procrastinating/editing with my third and fourth novels (halfway done with both). I'm also an avid reader of all kinds of fiction, so I'm looking forward to interacting with all of you here.

Hello Brook,

Just thought I would post this link for you. It is about a fellow indie author. Her book is listed on Independent Authors and Writers website. On this particular link it gives a Facebook link for Christian books by indie authors that might help you in your quest.

Hi Katherine.

I'm kind of multi-tasking between books, too. I think that is a kinder word for it. Just have different priorities to doing things through out the day. Yes, that's it, different priorities. (smile)

John Rykken (totenking) Hey Lynn, Katherine, Susan, Brook, and Mary,

Nice to meet you all. I'm not sure if I've introduced myself here before, but my name's John and I write YA fiction. My book, a fun vampire yarn called Bloodwood, is available from the usual online suspects and brick and mortar stores.

Okay, so I have a general question for whomever is curious. The other day I was talking with another writer and we both commented on the fact that, often when we sit down to write a story, we get a vague, discomfiting sense that we don't quite know what we're doing. It's beyond not knowing where the next scene is going or being unsure how to describe the next setting. It's more a question of, do I really understand my craft, understand what I'm doing as I put these words on the page? Anyway, just curious if anyone else experiences this.

Cheers,

John

Hi John,

I feel that way quite often...on the other hand I do all the typing for both my co-author and myself....so that is probably part of the problem. I've done some research for both of us. So I try to be as informed as I can be but...there are those moments.

I think the best way around that is to make it feel as plausible as you can...then maybe get a critiquing partner to help you flush out any problem areas. That's what I've been hearing alot about anyway.

Hope this helps.

John and I have already talked about this but for me it's the moment that I sit down to start a new project and since I personally feel like every new piece I start is another step up and another degree of challenges the last one didn't represent I just have this moment of sheer panic where I'm not sure I can pull it off. Then the whole book sometimes feels like a sloppy rambling floundering mess and then I get to the end and somehow I feel like I've managed to pull it off.

I can understand that. For us this was the biggest project that either one of us ever undertook...and completed...if a book is ever really completed that is.

Lynn,

"I think the best way around that is to make it feel as plausible as you can." Yep. Agreed. Your line reminds of that old Hemingway quote, which I refer to a lot of times when I'm stuck. "Do not worry," he wrote. "You have always written before and you will write now. All you have to do is write one true sentence, write the truest sentence you know."

Such a great line. Can't say how many times, when I've been stuck, it has helped me keep putting down words.

message 1366: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Hallbrooks (lynnhallbrooks) | 135 comments Hi John. I like that quote...I haven't seen it before. Then again...I haven't read much Hemingway. I agree that is a great line. True too.

Sometimes, I try to get a visual picture in my head of what is going on with the characters (be it our book or someone else's book) and then I can hopefully feel what they are feeling or seeing or touching or whatever.

I'm re-reading our book...long story...let's just say re-editing found issues. Anyway, I like the parts that I can actually visualize the action that is going on. (I think sometimes...I typed that or I wrote that...are you sure we did this.)

Thanks for the quote.

Lynn

Clark Carlton (clarkthomascarlton) | 3 comments Hello from glamorous Hollywood, California. My name is Clark Thomas Carlton and as a writer in Tinsel Town my life is an endless series of drug fueled parties peopled with A list movie stars and super models. I make hundreds of millions of dollars just tapping on a keyboard by my pool while my live-in masseuse rubs my shoulders.

Well … not really. The living in Hollywood part is true, but if you’ve ever been here you’d know it’s one of the most industrial parts of Los Angeles. I came to California not in search of fame and fortune but because I love writing, good stories, good movies. Hollywood has liked my original scripts but never enough to make them. Over the years I’ve taken screen and t.v. assignments, done rewrites, and I’ve been a “producer” of reality television. “Producer” is the credit you get when you write for a so called reality show. I have also been a ghost writer which is working on projects that more successful people don’t have time to write but have time to take credit for. I couldn’t take pride in any of it but it kept kibble in my dog’s bowl.

About 14 years ago I decided I would get all Howard Roark about my writing and only do it my way. I wrote a play that was well received and am happy to report that everywhere it was performed, not a word of it was changed. Shortly after, I started work on my first original novel which is Prophets of the Ghost Ants. My book was ten years in the writing and is the passion of my life. It’s a “tweener” of a novel: not exactly sci-fi, not fantasy in the dragons and sorcery mode and not precisely Young Adult. Interested publishers asked me if I would alter or excise certain elements which are Older Adult and my answer is no. Still is. I wrote this novel for myself, the book I always wanted to read. My sincere hope is others will like it too.

My favorite people to talk to are other writers and avid readers. I don’t mean to brag, but aren’t we just a more interesting bunch?

Love, peace and ants,

Clark

Hey John, I have that also. I think it has to do with having met your readers. When I was a teenager, I wrote stories for myself and that was just plain fun. But once you've been published and you know people are actually going to read and judge your work, a huge pressure is added. So I try not to think too much about this, once I sit down and start writing.

Zarin Thomson (zarindt) | 2 comments Good day!
I have recently published my cocktail book 'The Cape Town Bartender's Guide' and would like to introduce myself to the group and announce my book.
One of my biggest frustrations with cocktail books has been that one needs to many ingredients, so I devised a system that only requires ten liquors and spirits. This way I am able to educate more then just a few bartender's – which I have been doing for many years in different bars and restaurants in South Africa.
'The Cape Town Bartender's Guide' is an eBook (http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/...) designed to help people in being able to make a large variety of mixed drinks without having to go to a bar school and at the same time not to break the bank with equipment/liquors/spirits/glasses. It explains step by step, through the process of mixing great drinks all the time. My FaceBook group page 'The Cape Town Bartender's Guide Guild' is there for new recipes that do not appear (yet) as well as for discussion groups.
If any reader would like to write to write a review for my book, I would be happy to send you a free copy. Or if there are any authors on here who would like to do a review exchange, we can read and review each other’s eBooks.
I am looking forward to contributing to this group as well as networking with other writers.

Conrad Taylor (radman) | 13 comments Hello Fellow Members:

My name is Conrad Taylor. Little about my primitive upbringing, in a remote mining town carved into the upper reaches of the Amazon jungle, prepared me for a first-of-a-kind scholarship to the United States Military Academy during Age-of-Aquarius, Vietnam-era America. An extraordinary opportunity for most, West Point was a life-changer for me. Culture shock hardened my ensuing experience. Third World politics tested it - severely.

I recently completed my first book, PATH to FREEDOM: My Story of Perseverance. It is an inspirational memoir, which is available as an eBook at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBookstore, and Sony Reader Store.

Thanks for allowing me to make this shameless plug!

Best Regards,
Conrad
