Liane Shaw | 3 comments Hi Everyone
My name is Liane Shaw and I am the author of two YA novels published by Second Story Press. THINANDBEAUTIFUL.COM released in 2009 and received attention from goodreads that really helped to jumstart it for me. http://canadianbookshelf.com/Books/T/thi...
FOSTERGIRLS is my newest, coming out in the US next week, already released in Canada. I'm still new enough to all of this that I appreciate any opportunity to connect with readers and other authors so opportunities like this are very welcome! Thanks so much

Shaunna McLaren (shaunnareads) Hi there, I'm Shaunna. I'm 20 years old, from Scotland, and I'm studying English Literature at the University of Glasgow.

I've always been an avid reader - I've been told I must breathe books in as I get through them so fast! I dabble in a litte bit of fiction writing from time to time, but nothing I'm proud enough to put out there (yet!)

I've currently started up a book review blog, and I'm hoping to meet lots of new readers and authors, and find some great new reads. :)

I look forward to having two books on the shelves at the same time. I look forward to getting to know as many of you, and your work, as possible. I hope you will visit my website at www.pauldalexanderbooks.com. Thanks,

Thanks for all that you do.

Jacques Antoine (jacquesantoine) | 21 comments Hi. I'm Jacques Antoine, new member. I just published my first novel as an ebook on Amazon, B&N and Smashwords. I'll put it on Sony and the Apple store once I get an ISBN for it.

The title is Go No Sen, which means counterattack (roughly) in Japanese, or the waiting initiative (more literally). It's a martial arts term for responding to an opponent's attack (rather than pre-empting it, or meeting it head on). It's also the main theme of my book. It's about a high school girl who has to fight to stay in school, so to speak. Here's a capsule:

Emily Kane, 17, high school student, martial artist--when her family is shattered by covert operatives who attack their home, they go into hiding, but she refuses. She insists on staying behind, staying in school, confronting the people who attacked her family. She will do what it takes to wrest control of her life from the people seeking to destroy her.

I'm a college professor, but I took up fiction writing for my daughter, who's 12 and really into karate. She wanted to read an action story in which the fight scenes seemed really vivid, but authentic by her standards. And I wanted to give her a book with a truly admirable heroine, someone to aspire to be like.

The book is the first in a series, The Emily Kane Stories. The sequel, Sen No Sen, will come out in September. It's in the final tinkering stages. The third book in the series, Sensei/Sempai, is in the rough sketch stage, and should be ready for publication in November.

We are all having a really good time working on these books at my house! I hope you enjoy reading them.

Jacques

John Rykken (totenking) Hi Irini, Christa and fellow readers and writers,

It's great to see such a thriving online community of book lovers and raconteurs!

I'm John, 30, from Oregon, author of Bloodwood: the Chronicles of Max Mayhem, in which best friends Max and Lydia travel to the cold, dark north in search of a missing girl and hidden vampire town. If anyone would like to write a Goodreads book review, I'd appreciate it.

M.J. Schutte (authormjschutte) I'm MJ Schutte, author of Energy. This is my debut novel, self published in May 2011. I will read almost anything about magic but with my own book I decided to move away from that slightly. In a way, it's about magic although the main character believes he is not a wizard. Rather, he has a special gift or talent for manipulating energy around him. Energy in plants, animals, humans and even the temporary energy of an arrow in flight. I hope that readers will find this concept unique and interesting as I'm planning another 2 books around the same characters.

Nicholas Kotar (ravenson) | 3 comments Hi everyone! My name is Nick Kotar, and I'm an aspiring writer looking into self-publishing my new novel Raven Son. The novel is based on the Russian fairy tales I grew up with. I have several chapters posted on my website: http://nicholaskotar.ning.com. Currently, I'm finishing editing the book and having some lively discussions with people about plot elements and such. I read extensively in all genres, but I really love epic fantasy of the older kind - you know, Lord of the Rings and C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy. I appreciate beauty of language more than interesting plot twists, and I try to write with that in mind as well. I'm very excited to be part of this group!

message 1314: by Holden (new)

Holden Robinson (wwwgoodreadscomholdenrobinson) | 6 comments Hello all;

My name is Cat Holden Robinson, I am the self-proclaimed Queen of the Universe. Seriously, I am not batty, as the intro would suggest, but I do blog about being the Queen of the Universe, but I suppose we are all queens and kings of our own life. My debut novel, The House of Roses, The House of Roses by Holden Robinson under the pen name Holden Robinson, was published last year by Black Rose Writing.

It is a true to life tale of betrayal, lost love, secrets, and lies, but also focuses on the strength of family, and how nothing is worth more than true love. It is a story of growing up and coming of age, no matter how old we are, and touches on triumph from tragedy, which is how my writing career began.

After losing my dad to cancer in 2006, I decided to try my hand at novel writing, and a mere 100 years later (okay, it felt like that), I saw the first book in print.

I have since begun writing comedy, which is where I have found my true niche. Laughter has saved my life many times, and if I can draw someone into a world where they can forget their troubles, and laugh heartily, my day's work is done.

I also read everything I can get my hands on, and am a big fan of undiscovered treasures (debut authors), as so many of us disappear into this murky sea.

Glad to be among terrific company

Kay Baker | 21 comments Hi everyone,

My name is Kay Baker. My first book, Sentenced to Life, was released in March 2011. The book is the true story of an ex-felon who found salvation in prison, deals with the challenges and problems she faced in prison and when she was released and how she overcame all of them.
The book is written in fiction style.
I am currently writing my second book which deals with domestice violence and have been asked to write a third book which deals with rape.
All mybooks are based on true stories of ordinary people who find salvation through extraordinary circumstances.
It is a good and easy read.

Kelli (kelli4321) | 27 comments Hi I'm Kelli Evans I love books. I love how they feel and how they smell. I love being able to turn the page. I love writing just as much as I love reading. Which I think is obvious you can't love to write without loving to read.
I'm very, very serious about my writing. It's what I want to do, it's pretty much the only thing I've ever wanted to do. I used to think it was impossible the dream of being an established author was too far from my grasp but about a year ago I decided to knuckle down and give this a shot. I've written seven manuscripts since. No one has picked one up yet but I'm hopeful that one day someone will.
If anyone else is also serious and would like a sounding board I've started a small critique group on this site http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/5... I'd love it if more people joined.

message 1322: by M.J. (new)

M.J. Schutte (authormjschutte) Hi Robin. Yes, I'm a big fan of Star Wars but Energy is not based on that at all. I'm assuming you're refering to "the force" and what Jedi's can do? Energy is nothing like that. In most fantasy books (and Star Wars) there are some unexplained (or unexplainable) things. How can a person move objects with his mind? Where does the fire come from that a wizard can throw from his hands? How can objects, or people, change shape? These are, in my opinion, things that don't make sense. In my book, if you accept that energy is real and can be "felt", everything else is explained. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's all logical, explainable and believable with a very small leap of faith.
You can have a look on my website, www.mjschutte-energy.com or my fanpage, www.facebook.com/energynovel for excerpts.

I'm a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom of six (13, 10, 8, 5, 3, 1) and my fantastic husband of 14 years provides all the inspiration I need to write my romantic heroes. ;c) Most of my genre love goes to romantic suspense, although I'm a sucker for all kinds of romance. I write because--unlike schoolwork, dishes, and cleaning--a story is something I can actually finish. (Hey, it was a good theory! LOL.) I hope to be able to visit with you all with some frequency ... just *please* don't ask me to do your laundry! ;c)

Slam Dunk is a sports/mystery novel for young adults (especially reluctant readers) that's part of the Orca Sports Series. Sue Diaz | 5 comments Thank you for this opportunity to share my story.

My son, Roman, served two tours of duty as an infantryman in Iraq during the height of the insurgency. I am a journalist, and while he was there I chronicled that experience from the perspective of the home front for several publications. Those stories were the starting point for Minefields of the Heart, published last year by Potomac Books.

More than just a war story, Minefields of the Heart is also the story of a kid from a middle-class suburb coming into manhood in distant, war-ravaged land, and of a son and a parent in the process of redefining their respective places in the world and their relationship to each other. It is a story of growing up and a story of letting go, and the struggle that inevitably accompanies both, heightened by the hardships of war.

These links tell a bit more:

http://www.minefieldsoftheheart.com

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj4cxp... (3-minute video-excerpt)

http://www.csmonitor.com/Books/Book-R... (review featured on Powell’s Books)

At 176 pages, Minefields of the Heart is short enough to be read in one afternoon, but substantive enough to lead to a spirited discussion. And just this past week it became available on Kindle.

Again, thanks!

Mary Wood (maryauthor) | 3 comments Hello, I'm Mary Wood, I write Historical Sagas and have one book published, 'An Unbreakable Bond'

My style is gritty, telling it as it is, was.

I love everything about writing, but find research the most fascinating and rewriting for the millionth time the most frustrating.

The best feeling is when the words flow through you. It is like the characters are urging you to tell their story. I cry, laugh and get angry when writing, a response to the situations appearing on the page.

I am writing the prequel at the moment and it at times drains me at others excites me.

I love to edit others work, too. That is on the disciplines of creative writing. Need help myself with line editing...

An Unbreakable Bond is now available on kindle at a very low price as well as in paperback from Amazon and to order from all good book stores.

I can be reached at mary.wood18@yahoo.co.uk

I admire writers with the discipline to research. I'm new and just pushing out of my comfort zone in that regard, but when I do have to google something I'm distracted to no end by internet goings-on. I definitely need to work on the D-word! ;c)
