Barbara Reed (goodreadscombarbarareed) | 10 comments My name is Barbara Reed, I'm a professional musician and writer, and the author a Suspense series that's based in the music business. The series has two books so far: 'Harmonic Deception' is the latest, and 'High Notes Are Murder' was the first, and of course I'm working madly on the third. I'm also at work on a non-fiction that takes people or places and shows them from a nostalgic point of view. Hopefully that one will be available on the Kindle by the Fall. For now, both books are in Paperback, and Harmonic Deception is also on the Kindle.
I also LOVE to read!! I devour whatever is around me and recently decided it's time to re-read the classics, so I'm reading 'To Whom The Bell Tolls' now by Hemingway. Boy...how differently we write now than just a century ago...but that book, while a bit difficult to get into, can really be an eye-opener! Love it.Harmonic Deception

Jeffery Anderson | 19 comments Hello group,
I am Jeffery Anderson, a former publicist who went insane and decided to be a stay at home dad and author.

I have just published my first novel, Ephemera. It is a dystopian political satire about the strangest government conspiracies I could imagine and make seem remotely plausible. It is a little sci-fi, somewhat literary and dark humored - A hard book to categorize.

I'm excited to meet authors on good reads and exchange advice about marketing. I'm also excited to meet readers and hopefully interest them in my book.

Can't wait to hear from you,

Jeff

Collette Scott (ColletteScott) | 17 comments Hello Everyone!

First of all, I want to say thank you for such an amazing site and a great community! I just joined and have already been welcomed with open arms. So nice.

Anyway, a bit about me. Well, I have written my entire life but unfortunately listened to the naysayers that always said 'you'll never be published, it's too hard to get into'. Instead of following my dream, I went to college, got a bachelor's in English, thinking I may teach high school; then I went on to a master's in education - again thinking maybe I could just teach. I ended up in a corporate job to support my three kids and felt very unfulfilled. Finally my middle daughter kicked me in the pants (not literally, I promise) and told me to just do it. So, I did. I have never been happier, and I'm completely overworking myself with old projects and new.

I have just published Forever Sunshine, a story of love and loss, where a family struck by domestic violence learns how to move on and embrace hope. Going all the way, I opened a Twitter account, started a blog, have a Facebook page and am doing a huge book signing this Saturday in the Phoenix area. Next will be my very own website. It's been a lot of work, and this is all new to me, but I am loving every minute of it! As a wise friend has said, "You only live once!" - how true is that?

So I hope to make friends with you all. I am fast learning how us authors stick together, and I hope we can all help one another in the future.

Thank you again!

Collette Scott

Deb (soulhaven) | 11 comments Well, hi everyone. I've been here a few days, but still feel very green.
I am a reader and writer.
Have been reading for years. I used to write for the entertainment of myself and my friends at high school, but never even considered it as a career. Went on to University, and mundane jobs. When I lost my full-time job a few years ago, and took up temping, I found myself in a thumb-twiddling job with locked-down internet (for security reasons)... how to entertain myself between answering phone calls? Well, that is when I started writing again! I took a bunch of characters and started playing with them. And then, one day, I found that I had written several thousand words and had an idea that might turn into a novel.
Other temp jobs and then having a new baby did slow progress for a while, but now that I am at home and my son still has a couple of daytime sleeps, I am forging ahead again.

I originally wrote it as a screenplay 10 years ago and recently re-wrote it into a novella. I also write for Yahoo Contributors Network and do online ghost writing as well. My name is Drew.
I always loved science fiction and years ago I decided
to write a young adult science fiction book. I
finished it recently and it is now available on the
Kindle for 99 cents. The name of my novel is George
Buchanan Enters The Wormhole and I'm sure you and
your children will truly love it.
Anyway, this is the first day on Goodreads for me and
it's a great place to be at if you are an author.
Finally, my readers tell me that my book is better than Ender's Game or any of the Harry Potter novels.
Will you also agree? I hope so!
I believe you and your children will not be disappointed with my novel.
Also, please tell others about my book, if you truly
love it!

Randa Goode (randa_goode) | 1 comments Hello everyone! I'm Randa Goode, author of "Crossroads", the first novel in a YA Christian series. It's filled with rocky friendships and romance, angels and demons in spiritual warfare, and one girl who has to make a decision that will ultimately decide what path her life will take. I'm currently working on the sequel and (keeping my fingers crossed) should have a good rough draft in a few months.

I've also got a few starts for other YA books and even a grade school story. I just never know what my brain will come up with next, so I make sure to keep a folder with the ideas jotted down.

I tend to write YA because that's what I love to read. I've recently decided to take a summer sabbatical from editing my work. I'm just going to write until September and then go back and see what there. Kinda like NaNoWriMo, just a little longer and on my own.

Came in late on this thread, so hope I'm not repeating what others have said. Have you considered a compact micro-cassette tape recorder? Small, inexpensive and lots of storage time that you can have to put down thoughts, then replay them at home. That serves two purposes. 1. Does the idea sound as good the second time around? 2. You can then transcribe your notes onto the computer. Perhaps a voice recognition program would even make things easier.

Terry Callister (hombretel) | 7 comments Hello

I just wanted to tell you about my wife Sandra. She has completed a trilogy of romantic ghost stories about Moorcroft a sprawling mansion in Lancashire, England and its resident ghost, Charlotte Worthington. Now I like thrillers but really enjoyed reading these. I know I'm biased but I think my Sandra has a great talent for writing. These are three exceptional stories with a twist featuring Charlotte. The ghost has a complicated persona and when she wants something, or should I say somebody she will do whatever it takes to get her man????? I think it makes "Ghost". look like a pleasant little romance.

The books are all available as ebooks from Smashwords (which of course means you can sample before you buy) or Amazon Kindle and paperback versions are in the pipeline through Createspace:-

Sandy (sandynathan) | 12 comments To everyone and especially Rebecca Sinclair: Rebecca, you wrote, "I've been a Goodreads member for almost 2 years, yet only recently discovered the message boards and ability to create an Author Page." Boy, did your post strike me right on! I don't know how many years I've been a Goodreads member. I've got over 1,000 friends and I have NO IDEA how to use these message boards. I tried the other night and apparently stepped on one person's toes. I'm still smarting from the response. I'm writing a blog article about it and on-line etiquette. (I do blog. Have 4 of them.)

The other thing that just happened, Rebecca, is that I hit the reply button for your post, and it went totally somewhere else to someone else's post. What's that supposed to mean?

So, may all the newbies stumble around together and meet forgiving souls. And may all the old-timers realize that this social media thing is HARD. I've got 4 books out and have won 17 national awards with my writing. I think mastering this forum/message board stuff is harder by far.

Here's my blog for writers: http://yourshelflife.com Your Shelf Life: How Long Will You Last? YSL is devoted to writers attaining success AND sanity. This is a pretty crazy business. I want all of us to come out on top. The article on using social media should be up later today. I have guest bloggers, top book professionals, stuff you need to know to win book contests, beat writers' block. And more.

Hope to get to know all of you readers and writers better,

Sandy, you're not alone in stepping on toes. Although a brand new member, I was bounced from Amazon Kindle forum for objecting to unlimited book borrowing and equating it with intellectual property theft. Seems some people can't/won't accept that their perceived right to loan books is superseded by little things like copyright law and the Kindle Reader Purchaser Agreement. The most interesting part is that while I was summarily ejected from the Amazon Kindle group, the same posting has been welcomed and avidly discussed by other forums. Go figure.
I'm like you. After more than 45 years as publicist, journalist and author, I'm trying to aid others in succeeding as writers. That's why I wrote my book Self-Promotion for Authors.

The problem is that you begin your Goodreads tenure as strictly a reader, but have to apply separately for the author program.

EDIT: Quoted the wrong person lol

Hi, Brandy. I love your honest approach. I also love that you jumped into the story-creation business with a willingness to be less than perfect. I often wonder how many books never see the light of day because they are not yet perfect and the authors aren't willing to show them to agents, editors or readers. I was the same as Chris. It was by accident that I rated my books. Then when I realised what I had done, I couldn't find a way to undo it. LOL. I know some readers have issues with authors rating their own books, then you have readers who think the author doesn't believe enough in his/her own books NOT to give them a rating. LOL. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I've been on Goodreads as a reader since 2008 but just self published my first book and joined as an author. I am a graphic designer by profession, but left my day job to raise my daughter. I still do some freelance from my home office, and enjoy creating my own projects.

After a health scare this winter I decided to stop putting off my fanciful dreams of publishing books and get busy. I conceived a series of children's ebooks based on the idea of a safari in which child and parent could discover animals through the viewfinder of thier binoculars.

My first book, I see... Savannah, is now out and I'm starting on it's follow up. You can see the cover, download a free mini-book, and learn more about my other pursuits on my site DKGraham.com

Pearce Hansen | 5 comments Hi all,

I'm Pearce Hansen, author of the novel STREET RAISED, now available for the Kindle at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050JL0IM

“When Speedy raises from prison, he hitchhikes home to Oakland only to find his brother Little Willy a homeless crack head and his best friend Fat Bob bouncing in San Francisco's underground hardcore clubs. When two of their childhood homeboys get wrapped in chains by Mexican slangers and thrown in the American River alive, our heroes somehow get it together enough to plot revenge.”

“Sure, it maybe takes the edge off Speedy's game a little when he starts playing house with beautiful phone psychic Carmel, and it complicates things a bit more when Louis, the same cop who put him in prison, starts dogging their steps like an unwelcome relative. But when a racist coven of skinz comes howling for Speedy & Carmel's blood, and a serial killer with a monster in his head decides Speedy is the answer to all his unholy prayers, things get really interesting . . .”

Here’s the blurbs its garnered:
Ken Bruen (author of LONDON BOULEVARD, soon to be a major motion picture, Oscar winner William Monahan (screenwriter of The Departed) to write & direct): "One of the best writers I know. Imagine James Ellroy coupled with GR Martin and overseen by Willeford. But Pearce really needs no comparison to any other writer; he’s created his own compelling dark universe that ratchets up noir to an astonishing level.”

Jason Starr (bestselling author of THE PACK): "STREET RAISED is a full-tilt, dead-on descent into the Bay Area underworld, with lovably flawed characters and stunning dialogue. Every page, it seems, has something to marvel at. This is literary crime of the highest order, on par with the work of the great Eddie Bunker. Pearce Hansen is a major new talent."

Joe Lansdale (author of BUBBA HO-TEP starring Bruce Campbell): “STREET RAISED is a scar of a book, but it's a beautifully healed scar. Gutsy, fast-paced, written in an electric style. Recommended.”

Eddie Muller (founder and President of the Film Noir Foundation, in his San Francisco Chronicle review): “A fast, ferocious and often ugly ride through the East Bay's feral underground. Hansen's tale is a curious blend of drug culture minutia and a story line that's more a cranked-up fable than a traditional crime story. In its best passages, STREET RAISED suggests a contemporary version of Jack Black's classic 1926 memoir of itinerant criminal life, You Can’t Win – albeit a heavily armed, hyperviolent update.”

Brian Lindenmuth in his review at Spinetingler Magazine: “Hansen’s difficult past gives his prose an authentic raw and unfiltered feel. His style is raw and yet refined at the same time. This isn’t the San Francisco Bay Area from the post cards but a nasty dark place that doesn’t forgive or forget easily; it is a look into a world that most people look away from. I suggest that anyone who wants to read a story that might change the way they look at crime fiction to pick up a copy of STREET RAISED.”

Craig Clarke at his Somebody Dies blogspot: “I believe the current e-book wave's greatest benefit is in how it allows books and authors that were neglected the first time around, another chance to get noticed. And I can't think of a single novel that deserves this second chance more than Pearce Hansen's STREET RAISED.”

“The story displays a sure hand that knows what a good story requires: relatable characters, detailed settings, a clearly defined arc, and a satisfying ending. It is in the spaces between, though, where Hansen's experiences and innate knack for storytelling shine through: There is no distancing from these people; we get up close and personal with their ways of life. STREET RAISED is filled with situations that could only be described by one who has seen them happen up close.”

“He simply brings the rawness, the grit, and the upfront humanity to a genre that has, over time, gotten far too glossy. Hansen's unflinching (and completely engrossing) take will change how you feel about other crime writers. Kudos to Hansen for writing what is without a doubt the most affecting crime novel of the year.”

Laird Barron (author of The Imago Sequence and Occultation) at his Domination of Black website: "This novel is a beautiful and horrifying proposition. Hansen’s writing evokes an almost paralyzing aura of authenticity. His depiction of human predatory wildlife is sharp, yet neither glorifies nor condemns its subject. More like he’s simply clicked on the camera and the secret microphone and allows nature to take its course. All told, this novel contains more bloody darkness in one pinky than ten times its weight in typical category horror fare. I’m one jaded fella when it comes to shocks in literature, and I was gratified at how many moments Street Raised raised my hackles or caused me to reread a paragraph because I couldn’t quite accept that I’d seen what I’d seen. Hansen's delivery is nothing like Cormac McCarthy's, but this novel possessed a few visceral and nasty surprises that put it in the same territory of viciousness and macabre grandeur as Blood Meridian.”

“There is something of Michael Shea’s street beat poetics in Hansen’s rhythmic prose, and maybe a tab or two of whatever psychedelic Cody Goodfellow mixes into his morning joe, and maybe even a slight hint of what it would look like if Wambaugh stopped giving a rat’s ass about anyone else in the entire world, hitched up his suspenders, spit into his cupped palms, and then grabbed an axe and started in with blood in his eye."

Anthony Neil Smith (Editor of Plots with Guns!): "Pearce is a wild man, and demands your attention. Hansen is definitely one of the gonzo crowd and deserves a stage with a loud amplifier and some bright lights."

Todd Anderson at Thug Lit: “There are those who write about the street, and those who write from the street. Mr. Hansen has obviously walked that walk, and speaks the language of the down and out with a heartbreaking, frightening realism. Gutter-low and dirty, the way we like our women.”

Aldo Calcagno (Mystery Dawg Blog and Powder Burn Flash): “The Black Hole of Noir. Hansen writes stuff that is so damn dark and right on that it’s scary. This is a voice that needs to be heard, and demands a wide audience.” Street Raised by Pearce Hansen

Heather Adkins (heathermarieadkins) | 1 comments Hey, everyone :)

My name is Heather. I'm a 26 year old law enforcement dispatcher, though my goal is to make my living as a writer (and trust me, I don't make crap as a dispatcher, so I imagine it should be possible). I've been a reader member at Goodreads for a couple years, but have just this week merged to an Author page.

I published my first ebook short story Underneath on Smashwords for free a week ago as a promotion for my upcoming novel The Temple (due out this week). It's done really well, so far. Two five star reviews! I have a lineup of four novels to be released before the end of the year, as well as several short stories I'm going to release for free. I'm looking forward to being a part of the group and getting to know everyone.

Louis Lowy (louisklowy) | 5 comments Hi, all! My name is Louis K. Lowy, I'm the author of Die Laughing, a humorously dark sci-fi novel set in the 1950's of flying saucers, communist paranoia, and live television. It's being released by IFWG Publishing. E-book in July, and hard copy in August.

A former firefighter. I am the recipient of a State of Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. My work has appeared in, among others, Coral Living Magazine, New Plains Review, Ethereal Tales Magazine, Pushing Out the Boat, Enizagam Magazine, The MacGuffin Magazine, and The Chaffey Review.

Here's a brief synopsis of Die Laughing.

Beamed aboard an alien spaceship, Las Vegas funny man Sam E. Lakeside is forced to participate in a plan to rob the earth of its oil.

When the shape-shifting aliens – who take on the form of Trixie Norton, Nat King Cole and others they’ve seen on TV – and their leader, a power-hungry mobster, murder Sam’s best friend and manager, Sam vows revenge.

He recruits a blacklisted comic book writer and the mobster’s girlfriend, and drags them cross-country to thwart the aliens. Their journey takes them to New York City and the Steve Allen Show, where the key to the alien’s conquest lies.

Sam, embroiled in an escalating tangle of violence, love, and lies, is forced to choose between what he wants most in the world – to be a star – or the planet’s survival.

Thanks everyone! I look forward to participating in the discussions.

Wyatt Davenport (lunaraseries) | 18 comments Hi, I'm Wyatt Davenport. Author of the Lunara series. My first book (Lunara: Seth and Chloe) is out and wanting to make writing a career, I hope everyone can have an opportunity to enjoy it (www.amazon.com and www.bn.com). I would describe it as "star wars in our solar system".

But it isn't just for scifi geeks. I wrote it as light scifi so anyone could enjoy it. An adventure that just so happens to be set in space.
