Hi --I'm Brandi. My writing runs the gamut. Most of what I wrote until a year ago was adult non-fiction. I now have one children's book out and am working on other manuscripts. I got tired of the soul-sucking nature of business writing, so I'm working on my own projects now.
Here's a question I'll open to anyone who wants to answer. If you write in multiple genres, is it absolutely necessary to use pen names? I've always heard that it is, but recently I've been seeing more people who don't do that. (Let's be honest, too, it's much easier for social media if it's clear who you are.)
Welcome to the group, Brandi! No, it's not necessary to use pen names. I write both children's books (in various genres, though mainly fairy tales/fantasy and animal stories) and poetry, and I use the same name for everything. Plus, I've seen plenty of others who write in different genres without using different pen names for them. In fact, this is the first time I've ever known it be mentioned that using different pen names for different genres is a must. So, do what you want when it comes to pen names.
Welcome Brandi! Victoria's right. You don't have to use a pen name. I do use a pen name, but not for the reasons you give. My pen name is my maiden name. I wanted all my friends who knew me before I was married to recognize my name, plus I'm divorced now and, though I kept my old married name, I didn't want my ex-husband's family to be involved in the publicity.

I am Evan T. Konnor, a new author with a first book ready for some kind of input from someone other than myself or friends, perhaps editing. I specialize in LGBT fition, nothing too racy, but stories that I hope are meaningful and well thought out. My second book is already percolating around in my head based on a piece I wrote many years ago, which was not well done at all back then, but which still has potential, I think.I'm hoping to makes some friends in the writing/reading community here and, perhaps, share some helpful information and insights. I've always felt that some of the best advice for a 'product' comes from the end-user and others who actually build it. I don't know if this is an ill-founded philosophy, but it seems to make sense.
I look forward to chatting with you all.
Evan
Hi there. My name is L.J. Taylor. I'm an attorney by day and a novelist. I just released my romantic legal thriller - "Just Dreams" - on August 30, 2014 as an e-book. This week, it became available as a paperback too. It was thrilling to finally be able to hold my book in my hands. I'd be willing to gift two e-copies in exchange for honest reviews. Send mea message if you're interested.
If I can get my kindle working, I might be interested in exchanging e-books and reviews. The Dragon Dreamer is a YA science fantasy, so a bit different from your genre.
Hello! My name is JC Gatlin and I write murder mysteries set in Florida. I have two books published and working on the third. I live in Tampa, Florida and attend a lot of the writing conferences and book fairs in Florida. I'm a member of the Tampa Writer's Alliance, The Florida Heritage of Writers, and Mystery Writers of America. I also write a blog about "writing mysteries" at www.jcgatlin.com
I'm looking forward to meeting author authors and readers. Love hearing from people and talking about what they're writing.
Welcome Jo, L.J., and J.C.! I'll check out the blog and books.I have a goodreads giveaway with 3 copies starting tomorrow, OCT 4, for my YA science fantasy The Dragon Dreamer (Oct 4-23). Enter for a chance to win!
Thanks, all, for the welcome. I'm taking this to mean I posted my intro correctly! Small victories do add up. Glad to be here. Would be interested in exchanging reviews, especially literary category and/or MM material.

My series includes some gay romance but is literary in style. Any suggestions for marketing this kind of cross-genre material, Serena?

Hello! My name is Brittney, I'm a nursing student from Arkansas. I read whenever I can. I love to write but I haven't in a while. I am a fan of New Young Adult, Young Adult, Historical fiction and paranormal young adult. I don't really like nonfiction because I live nonfiction. I am trying to get my book review blog off the ground.

Good luck with your new review site. If you'd like a review copy of my book "Prey of Desire" for your review site, I'd be happy to send you a copy.
Hello, my name is Spencer. I'm an unpublished writer of multiple genres and reader of everything under the sun.
Hi, my name is Angela and I am a clinical social worker, published poet and voracious reader. I enjoy reading a variety of subjects and also like to review books here and on Amazon. I really appreciate what I have viewed so far in this group and the kind welcomes and openness of everyone.

Spencer wrote: "Hello, my name is Spencer. I'm an unpublished writer of multiple genres and reader of everything under the sun."Hey Spencer. Welcome to Good Reads. I'm fairly new too. Do you write any mystery-suspense in those "multiple genres?"
Hello, my name is Kendi Thompson. I joined Goodreads a little while ago and have used the free giveaways to promote my self published novel SOUTH OF REASON, an historical fiction piece with southern intrigue, mystery and romance. It's my first. I like to read and review and belong to a local writers group where we critique each other's material. I'm currently working on my second book YEAR OF THE CAT. I would love to learn and share marketing ideas as I'm trying to build my author platform. It seems the promotion climate is constantly changing!
My name is L.E. Coleman and I write self-help books mainly dealing with personal topics like child custody, relationships, codependency, etc--all with a spiritual slant. I started writing screenplays a few years ago and I'm currently in the pre-production stage of producing my first comedy movie. My books are distributed by Book Clearing House and can be found on most book sites.
My name is Admire Mugwinyi from South Africa. I am an engineer by profession, a part time Maths and Physical Sciences teacher in the South African Department of Basic Education, a part time Lecturer in Engineering colleges, a writer and a self publisher of Sciences, Maths and Engineering subjects. I have published my first three Physical Sciences study guides (Grade 10 - 12), and I enjoy doing it. My vision is to make Science, Maths and Engineering simpler to understand even by an average student, hence I write my books in a most simplified and yet accurate manner. I am still learning, and I love constructive criticism on all my work to make me grow.

Keeping all of your work on one laptop is a bad idea. Dropping that laptop into the Mississippi is worse.
Admire wrote: "My name is Admire Mugwinyi from South Africa. I'm pleased to see someone take text books seriously; a good one is priceless. I worked as a marine biologist. I wrote two hands-on math-sci books for very young people and older folks, with crystal kits. I've learned that many people of all ages do not understand fractions or ratios; even calculus students. They don't use a common denominator to add fractions, including 1/(sin x) + 1/(cos X). So it's 4th grade math tripping up high school students. It would be nice if you could work a review into your books, and include ALL steps in sample problems; even what you see as "obvious". Because it's seldom obvious to them. Good luck!
Aloha from Hawaii, I'm Amara, a full time writer, okay except when I'm teaching or something like that. Have to make a living) and I've just published my first novel, Merili's Wine. I'm already working on my second and have the third layed out and ready to go. So much work and so little time. I live on the Big Island with my husband, 2 dogs and our kitty Ling. I have 7 grandchildren and 3 greats, even I can't believe it. Looking forward to connecting with you all.
