Goodreads Authors/Readers discussion
Introduce Yourself!
Hey all!My name's Mikey. I'm a writer mostly in the m/m romance genre. I'll have three works coming soon. Two shorts and a novel. The first due out in June. Yay.
I enjoy reading in my genre as well, but I also read spy novels. My favorite spy is David Stone's Micah Dalton. Yeah, I know, he's a cleaner.
Monica's remark about authorly introverts and social media extroversion reminds me of myself when I first sat blinking in astonishment at the idea of twitter for communicating. Approaching comfort with twitter and it's kin, now. It is possible to be oneself on SM ... Even for those of us who need to disappear for weeks. (I call unplanned disappearnces 'time slip' after a phenomenon in my novel series, the Okal Rel Saga)

I believe that is how those of us who have been diagnosed with an illness find a purpose to our experience. If we can help just one person by sharing our experience, then our suffering will have been worth it. I love to read memoirs for that reason and I don't think I am alone
Hello,My name is Danielle Ackley-McPhail and I write all varieties of speculative fiction in both long and short form.
I have six novels, one of them, Baba Ali and the Clockwork Djinn, co-written with Day Al-Mohamed.
I have three solo short fiction collections, and my stories have appeared in over 40 anthologies.
I am best known as the senior editor of the Bad Ass Faeries anthologies.
In addition to being a writer and an avid reader, I have worked in publishing for over 20 years. Currently I am typesetter and Promotions Manager for Dark Quest Books (www.darkquestbooks.com).
Welcome, Danielle.I'm a newbie trying to finish my *ugh* editing. In my travels here trying to learn the ropes, I'm leaning towards self-publishing, but your link intrigued me, so I followed it.
I trailed two of the titles on the website to Amazon and discovered they were both published under other-than darkquestbooks. I'm totally confused, but I'm curious, too.
I'm getting the notion that if I decide to self-publish, I need to come up with a 'publishing company' title... or do I?
Hi, Danielle,It's nice to see you here! I remember the Bad Ass Faeries anthologies! I bought a paperback copy back when they were getting started. :)
Best Wishes,
Marilyn

Hi Chester,
I am a small-press author working with multiple publishers: Dark Quest Books, Mundania Press, Padwolf Publishing, Dragon Moon Press, Fantasist Enterprises, Flying Pen Press...I don't think I've missed any. Also, Dark Quest Books has about four collateral imprints: DTF Publications, Palomino Press, Sparkito Press, Dullahan Press. I am published under the primary Dark Quest imprint, as well as DTF Publications and Palomino Press. I've also edited one of the anthologies under Sparkito Press.
As you see, things can get really complicated.
However, that having been said, if you do decide to self-publish it is definitely good to Brand your work with an official Publishing Imprint as some people might discount your work if it is obvious it is self-published.
Sad to say that stigma still remains, if to a lesser degree than it used to. I generally caution authors to think very hard before they pursue self-publishing because it takes a lot of knowledge to put together a professional-quality book and if you don't get things right it reflects poorly on you and your book, no matter how good the writing and storytelling are.
So, if you go that route, definitely do your homework and do it right. Look at books in the book store and see how they are put together. Invest in outside editing because we can never truly edit ourselves (our minds fill in the blanks since we know what we intended to write). And invest in good art. Pay attention to clean, comfortable design inside and outside the book, and read some back cover copy from similar books so you know how to write something catchy and interesting. If you are going electronic only, be sure to research how to create a good file and do proper conversion because nothing is more annoying when reading an ebook that bizarre characters being inserted into the text, odd breaks at the wrong time, or difficult to read text.
My personal website is www.sidhenadaire.com.
Hope that helps,
Best,
Danielle

Hi Marilyn! I remember you, believe it or not :) So glad to encounter you again. I hope you enjoyed the book.
We are now up to three volumes in the Bad-Ass Faeries series.
Bad-Ass Faeries, Just Plain Bad, and In All Their Glory are published through Mundania Press now, and a new volume, It's Elemental, is releasing from Dark Quest Books next month. SO excited!
Sadly we are going to take a break after this. There is a Best of collection planned for next year, but after that we are going to focus on the Bad-Ass Faerie Tale line of novellas, which are longer works based on popular stories from the anthologies. These are published through Dark Quest Books and already include
The Halfling's Court: A Bad-Ass Faerie Tale and Redcaps' Queen, which are based on my biker faerie stories, and Three Chords of Chaos, by James Chambers, which is based on his rocker faerie, Gorge.
At least four more are in the works.
Anyway, great "seeing" you again!
Best,
Danielle

Hi, Danielle,That's awesome that the Bad-Ass Faeries series has expanded...and the idea of novellas based on the short stories sounds great! Congratulations!

Welcome Kerry! Congratulations on your up and coming empty-nester status. I still have a son at home. He left for a little while last year and will soon be leaving again, but not to join the Air Force.
My dad was an Air Force veteran.
Hello everyone! Joining to see how groups on Goodreads works. I read a lot of non-fiction, particularly personal finance books and was inspired to write my own when we moved to Hawaii a few years ago. Sell Your Stuff, Save Your Life

Hello Readers and Authors - I'm Janice Graham, and I also write biographical fiction as Juliet Gael. I'm a New York Times bestselling author of women's fiction ("Firebird"), with novels translated into 20-some languages. I was very fortunate to be published in hardback by major publishers, but it's a thrill to have digital technology open up communication between authors and readers. Back in the good old days, readers sat down and penned letters that were forwarded to us by our editors, and some of those letters never made it to us. Now we know what you all think, for better or worse. I'm particularly proud of my latest novel, critically acclaimed "Romancing Miss Bronte," written as Juliet Gael. I'm at work on a novel about Mary Shelley, and a contemporary women's fiction novel about love addiction. My early novels, which were published pre-digital era, are now up as eBooks. I've got all kinds of social media footprints out there - so I'm easy to find, and always happy to connect with readers. www.janicegraham.com and www.romancingmissbronte.com Twitter @JaniceLGraham Facebook at www.facebook.com/janice.graham.5661 I've also got an Amazon Author page to make it easy to find my work.

I've been remarkably quiet lately, and I blame the ever soul-crushing writer's block. :P Fortunately, I think I went and broke the cycle by doing a guest blog spot on the lovely Mysti Parker's blog, where she hosted a writing challenge that featured different authors and bloggers doing personal essays on every letter, A-Z. I've been fortunate to cross Mysti's path a few times, as she is not only an accomplished author I met via Goodreads, but a mentor over at Writer's Village University. I even won a little contest on her blog last year, writing on a flash fiction prompt. She has a wonderful community of friends and writers out there, and I highly recommend checking her out. :) My letter was "Y", and I chose to write an essay on youth, and growing older. It is an odd subject for someone my age to tackle, I know. Such reflections are usually done by writers in their 50's and 60's. I thought it might be interesting to approach the idea of lost youth from the perspective of someone who is suddenly what the world would consider "an adult", and doesn't always feel equipped to handle such a responsibility.
I'd love if you'd read the essay here!
Please show us both some love with likes, comments, sharing, and all that jazz....:)

In my previous life (before I got tired twice -- which made me REtired), I was a computer geek.
Okay, let's get honest. I don't exist. I'm the figment of the imagination of a (yes, retired) computer geek who doesn't want to catch the flack for his writing. He gets the money; I get the blame.
But like many artificial people, I have hopes and dreams, along with a love for good stories. Some of my favorite authors are God, Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, James Clavel, Heinlein, Harry Turtledove, John Bowers, and Bruce Davis (I love his stuff). Oh, and did I mention Robert Heinlein?
Of course, having an ego as big as all outdoors, I think my stuff is the best, but I won't bore you with that. I'll just spend time in front of a mirror, lost in admiration.
Now, who has the jug? Pass it around 'cause I have a terrible thirst.
