In grade school, back in the 1960s, I read a sci-fi fantasy short story about a dream machine which allowed the person(s) hooked up to it to experience the realization of their deepest dreams. Obvious resonance with fears about the impact of television and drug abuse, the story ends with the entire civilization collapsing because everyone no longer wishes to work or do anything expect stay hooked up to this machine.—I do not any longer remember the story's title or the author's name and have searched the internet and bookstores in vain for years. Does this ring any bells with anyone in this group? If so, please contact me at sita.dcw@gmail.com

I can only think of a book called The Man Who Awoke by Lawrence Manning. More a collection of short stories strung together by a plot about suspended animation. One of the stories features a city of dreamers, who get hooked up to dream machines and have to be tended by an increasingly unhappy underclass. The hero awakens and leads them to freedom.
