I found it odd that Tem had to learn how to petrify someone as a Basilisk. That didn't make sense to me... If the humans won the war with mirrored shields, then there shouldn't be an 'act' that you must perform to petrify someone - isn't it just that you look in the Basilisk's eyes?? Ugh.

out of everything, that was what you found to be odd
i'm jk - now that i think about it, i like that it takes an effort to petrify someone and that it's not just an involuntary reaction. it seems like this is information withheld from humans to invoke fear, as in the humans would think that you just have to look them in the eye and not that it requires an effort on their part. also basilisks aren't just spawned as adults so it would make sense that they would have to learn to petrify, like we learn to walk and talk, etc. they are sentient.
your question about the mirror does make sense- but i forget, if they look in a mirror do they just die or do they petrify themselves? i thought of the mirror thing as separate from the petrification
