By the third night, I was expecting him.
I'd showered. Put on actual clothes instead of ratty sweatpants. Even brushed my hair.
This is stupid. It's just Jester.
But my heart still jumped when I heard the knock.
I opened the door, and there he was—green hair slightly messy, that familiar smirk on his face, but his eyes... his eyes were darker tonight. Hungry.
"Hey," he said, his voice low.
"Hey."
He stepped inside, and this time, he didn't bring food.
He closed the door behind him and just... looked at me.
"Your ankle," he said. "How is it?"
"Better." I shifted my weight, testing it. Still sore, but manageable. "I can walk without the crutches now."
"Good."
Silence stretched between us, thick with tension.
"Jester—"
He crossed the distance between us in two strides and kissed me.
Hard.
Desperate.
Like he'd been thinking about this all day.
I melted into him immediately, my hands fisting in his shirt, pulling him closer.
His hands gripped my waist, lifting me slightly, and I wrapped my arms around his neck.
"Bedroom," he murmured against my lips.
"Yeah," I breathed.
He walked me backward through the apartment, never breaking the kiss. We stumbled over the coffee table, knocked into the wall, but neither of us cared.
When we reached the bed, he lowered me onto it gently, crawling over me.
His weight settled between my legs, and I gasped at the contact.
"Still okay?" he asked, his voice rough.
"Yes."
He kissed me again, slower this time, but no less intense. His hand slid under my shirt, palm flat against my stomach, then higher.
I arched into his touch, and he groaned.
"You're killing me," he muttered against my neck, pressing hot kisses along my throat.
"Good," I whispered.
His hand found the hem of my shirt and paused. "Can I...?"
"Yes."
He pulled my shirt over my head and tossed it aside, then just... stared.
"What?" I asked, suddenly self-conscious.
"You're beautiful," he said simply.
My face heated. "Shut up."
"Make me."
I pulled him down and kissed him, and he smiled against my lips.
His hands explored—tracing my ribs, my waist, the curve of my hips. Every touch sent electricity through me.
I tugged at his shirt, and he sat back just long enough to pull it off.
Oh.
He was lean, muscular, with a few scars scattered across his chest and abs. I reached up and traced one with my finger.
"From the circus?" I asked.
"Yeah." He caught my hand and pressed a kiss to my palm. "Occupational hazard."
Then he was kissing me again, and I forgot how to think.
His hips rolled against mine, and I gasped at the friction.
"Jester—"
"I know," he breathed. "I know."
His hand slid down, fingers hooking into the waistband of my pants.
And then—
His phone buzzed.
Loud. Insistent.
He froze.
"Ignore it," I whispered.
It buzzed again. And again.
He cursed and sat up, grabbing his phone from his pocket.
His expression darkened as he read the screen.
"What is it?" I asked, sitting up and pulling my shirt back on, suddenly feeling exposed.
"Kile," he said tightly. "There's an emergency at the circus. One of the rigging lines snapped during rehearsal. Someone's hurt."
My stomach dropped. "Is it bad?"
"I don't know." He stood, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I have to go."
"Of course. Go."
He looked at me, conflict written all over his face. "I'm sorry—"
"Don't." I shook my head. "It's fine. Really. Go help."
He hesitated, then leaned down and kissed me—soft, lingering, full of promise.
"Tomorrow," he said.
"Tomorrow," I agreed.
He grabbed his shirt and left.
I fell back onto the bed and stared at the ceiling, my body still humming with unfulfilled desire.
Tomorrow.
