Chapter 1 – 5 – Ummm, I don’t know about this…….(view spoiler)[ Ok, I’m going to relax a little and just try and have fun with this. I get the book is a response to male misogyny (generally), but I’m not sure misandry is a very admirable solution, even for my feminine rage fantasy characters (unless you’re the evil villain). It’s early, so let’s see what happens here. Don’t get me wrong, I love women kicking men’s ass’s in these stories when they deserve it, but not sure “all” men deserve it. I did enjoy the punishment Olerra chose for King Atalius – he’s just the kind of guy that deserves it. I like Tricia Levenseller’s books so I’m going to try and curb my curiosity if the author intends a bigger message here and just enjoy the fantasy story. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 6-11 - (view spoiler)[ Ok, even though Olerra thinks she has a different guy, and he is stomping mad, I see a little warming between the two of them (just a tiny bit…..) Maybe we can get to mutual respect, admiration or even collaboration for a more balanced kingdom? Too much to ask so early? Olerra seems to have some differing views of men than the other royals. At least she doesn’t seem cruel. Also, I’m wondering what she will feel when she figures out she’s got the wrong guy. I’m not sure it matters, does it? (hide spoiler)]

I like the idea on the surface, but I feel that I’ve lived too long in the world that does this to women that seeing it done back to men isn’t who I am. I’m not getting any of the good Romania’s vibes that I’m here for, despite the evidence growing that Olerra isn’t as bad as most. I feel some strong “not all men” sentiment, and for me I can’t be a bystander. I will read spoilers to see how it ends. I wish you both enjoyment from this! It’s just not for me. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 14-15 - (view spoiler)[ Great chapters for Olerra and Sanos to lower their guardrails a little. Sometimes you have to have bad things happen to learn life lessons, yes? They both seem to understand each other better and their histories so they can have more empathy towards their purposes. He is really beginning to see what Olerra is up against with her cousin and even feeling a little defensive towards her. I think the author is doing a great job easing us into a possible connection that started from a seemingly villainous and contentious beginning. The plot thickens….. (hide spoiler)]

BUT, I started thinking about it and I concluded that the reason I think I like fantasy books in general is their are all usually based on a heroic victory, triumph over some type of evil. So many of these books oppress entire groups of people based on identity (witches, people of magic, women, people from a different warring kingdom, etc.) and our fictional heroes fight AND WIN over these tyrants. I guess I hoped that this book is really no different except that it hits home a little because I am part of the identity of the oppressor - but it is still just a fantasy, so I just considered it another story. For this book as well - I started to see it more about the relationship about these two - which does indeed get much more interesting. I respect your choice though for sure - certaintly there have been many books I just felt "this is just not fun for me to read about......." and mostly I read for fun. I'm a therapist so I get enough seriousness in my work, lol, I read to "not" be serious. (hide spoiler)]

LOL! I also have that same "No DNF" bone in my body although it does happen occasionally (mostly from extreme boredom) - but if you find a cure for this let me know - I feel I've given a lot of time away to books I didn't really enjoy that much.

This is going to be my first "official" DNF...I usually just delete the book from my list. It's all good, all good.....just too many Handmaid's Tale vibes which I also refuse to watch even though I wanted to see where the story went. I want the triumph over evil (also why I love fantasy/romantasy), but sometimes I just can't get mired in all the evil that comes before. this book was hitting those notes for me. I see a lot of potential in the story. I'm very hit-and-miss with romantasy lately. Maybe I need to try something else for a minute.

Finished – Liked it!! Had a hard time putting it down towards the end! (view spoiler)[ Ok, Levenseller does it again creating a character that at first seems kind of hideous and then makes me fall in love with her by the end of the book (example – The Darkness Within Us). I loved him too for his ability to be open-minded and not actually be driven towards caring for Olerra for more than lust. I loved how Olerra kicked the old kings ass! Yay!! All ends well. Yeah, I ended up really enjoying even though I admit at first I was like, Ughh, I don’t like how this is starting…….. (hide spoiler)]

I feel sorry for him that he had to get his ears pierced. My parents had mine pierced when I was young and I didn't particularly care for them much. I did really enjoy reading the book, it was a new perspective and unlike anything I've read before. I don't get why this country ruled by women feels so screwed, I am thinking about that preference for Glenaerys as successor, I would like to be in the head of one of those that want her on the throne to understand. Makes no sense, from the start it's all about female strenght (mainly on the body to submit the other sex) and then for her cousin you know what, doesn't mean anything not having worked on improving that part. The end of the king father was perfect, nice how Olerra trapped him, near gave Sanos a hearth attack! His family was sweet at the end and finally we met the Andrastus.
