I’ve just finished an advance reader copy of Only Breath & Shadow by Andrew Tweeddale and I would like to recommend it for a group read as not only is it a brilliant literary read it serves as a warning as to how easy it is scapegoat marginalised communities.

If you’re a fan of powerful historical fiction that explores the human cost of war, Only Breath & Shadow by Andrew Tweeddale deserves a place on your radar.

Set in 1930s Vienna under Nazi occupation, this novel offers a deeply original perspective through Christian Drewe, a blind man navigating a world that is morally and politically descending into darkness.

As the Nazi regime tightens its grip, Christian becomes the unlikely protector of four Jewish children, aided by an American singer in a city filled with fear, informers, and danger. The novel blends historical reality with fiction, drawing on true rescue efforts during the era, and shines a light on the persecution faced by gay and Jewish communities.

What stood out most to me is the how disability, identity, and circumstance shape the way we experience oppression and moral choice. It’s a reminder that “seeing” clearly isn’t about sight, but about conscience.

If you enjoy books like All the Light We Cannot See, this is one to read.
