Caroline | 17 comments One of my goals for 2010 is to read a book by Charles Dickens. I have not ready any of his books. So I was hoping I could get some opinions on which one I should read.

What is your favorite?

Paul Hollis | 194 comments I'd probably pick Great Expectations or David Copperfield I read those when I was young and remember them well. Currently, I'm reading his Bleak House and enjoying it but don't think it should be a first to read.

Petra Both Great Expectations and David Copperfield were good. If I remember correctly, GE dragged a little in the middle. It's been a few years, though, so I may be mixed up.
Another good Dickens is Oliver Twist.

Ashley (ash88) | 34 comments I've only read three, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and Hard Times. Out of those, I would say go with one of the first two! I loved them :) Although I was pretty young when I read Hard Times so I will have to try it again...

Peregrine You might try A Christmas Carol; it's short, seasonal, and soooo good!

Heather L (wordtrix) I've read A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations and liked them all. Bleak House and A Tale of Two Cities are on my TBR pile.

Caitlin | 4 comments My first Dickens was Our Mutual Friend and I fell in love with him as a writer. Like most of his novels, it's pretty hefty, but lovely as well.

I'd agree here - A Christmas Carol

LaTrica | 55 comments Christmas Carol or Great Expections. Hard Times is my favorite but if you're going to read only one, the more popular ones may be your best bet.

Lianne (eclecticreading) Our Mutual Friend is my favourite Dickens. I had tried Dickens before but was rather turned off by the prose but this book made me love him as a writer. It's pretty epic in scope but all the characters are interesting and there's just this whole range of emotions going on throughout the entire novel. =)
