Rebecca Best Book - Poisonwood Bible

Book I recommend - Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.

message 5: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Cool idea, Jamie.

Best Book- The Gargoyle. I thought the story was intricately woven and great details.

Worst Book- The Lazarus Project The story jumped around and wasn't very engaging.

Most Surprising- The Hunger Games I couldn't believe how engaging this book was, I couldn't put it down.

Book I recommend- Columbine I recommended this book to everyone.

message 6: by Misty (new)

Misty Best Book- Memoirs of a Geisha - after 100 pages of absolute depression, this book was really good. It really drew me into it's world.

Worst Book- Either Life of Pi or Act of Treason. I think Act of Treason might be just a little worse because the writing was so poor. I used better grammar in high school English papers than this man used in his book. It was really awful.

Most surprising- Panic by Jeff Abbott. He really pulls off the 21st century espionage/intrigue novel. I was hooked from the first few sentences.

Book I recommend- Dead After Dark by Charlaine Harris. I know so many people who love the Twilight series (which I don't think is that great). I always tell them that they need to read Sookie Stackhouse because it's in a similar vein only written for grownups! LOL

message 7: by Britt☮ (last edited Dec 13, 2009 05:12AM) (new)

Britt☮ (genki_bee) Best book - In Her Name

Worst book - Twilight series (though the fourth one, Breaking Dawn, was the most tolerable... partly because of the sweet relief that came with someone other than Bella narrating the book for a while, and partly because I knew it was the last installment in the series and was excited for it to be over as soon as possible)

Most surprising(ly good) book - The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University

Book I recommend - The Book of Dahlia

message 8: by SarahSaysRead (new)

SarahSaysRead Oh man, I don't know if I can pick just one for those categories!!

Best book of the year - The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. And, The Shadow of the Wind. Huh, seems to be a wind theme there...

Worst book of the year - it's a tie betweenWater for Elephants and Slaughterhouse-Five . UGH.

Most surprising book of the year - I was so disappointed in this one...I'd been waiting for it for so long!! An Echo in the Bone

Book I would recommend - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society And of course the best book that I mentioned...

message 9: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Great idea Jamie! Very hard to narrow down... GAH!

Best Book - The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Worst Book - When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris, at times very funny, but on a time/money budget - not my thing.

Most surprising book - The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

Book I would recoomend - the aforementioned The Book Thief or Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

message 14: by Becka the (new)

Becka the Book Girl (beckachoat) Worst - Sophie's World. I don't think I've ever before finished a book I hated so much. I kept hoping it was going to turn into something...

Best - the trilogy of books giving Mr. Darcy's side of the story by Pamela Aidan: An Assembly Such As This, Duty and Desire, and These Three Remain.

Most surprising - Pillars of the Earth. An acquaintance got me really excited about reading it, and it turned out not to be for me at all.

Best New Authoress - Pamela Aidan, as mentioned above.

Favorite Author this year, always and forever - still Tolkien.

Laura | 49 comments Best for Orginality? The Gragoyle; Dark Places
Most well written? Olive Kitteredge; The Heritics Daughter
Best storyline? The Help
Best and worst characters? Abileen from The Help
Best Author: Kathleen Kent

By far one of the best year for novels!

message 17: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 2175 comments Brenda, do you listen to audio books? I listened to The Help and really enjoyed it that way. Skeeter, Minnie and Abilene each have their own reader so you can easily keep them separate, plus it makes them more "real" to hear the stories in their voices. Just a thought.

Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments Best book of the year for you? Let me get back to you on that...

Worst book of the year for you? I loved the House of Night series until about the fourth boook, and then it got monotonous and tedious.

Most surprising book of the year for you (either one you thought you wouldn't like or one that you thought you would love and hated)? American Wife . I was surprisingly entranced with the story.

Book you recommended to people the most? I have been suggesting Kristin Hannah and Marian Keyes a lot.

Most well written?
Best storyline?
Best and worst characters? All of the Sookie Stackhouse novels have characters that I ADORE! Sookie makes me giggle.
I fell in love with all of the girls on FIREFLY LANE by Kristin Hannah.
