Steve Scott | 9 comments It's always winter in Aberdeen in the Stuart McBride books. The first 3-"Cold Granite",",Dying Light"and "Broken Light"are especially dark-in both the weather and the stories. Some of the humour is bordering on slapstick-eccentric senior officers, bungled investigations etc.A word of caution-if you're looking for Lord Peter Wimsey-style gentrification this is not for you.It is raw and unrelenting but,I think as good as anything currently happening in crime fiction. You want driving rain, freezing temperatures and glowering skies ?-McBride's the man for you. Hope this helps !

Jacky (jackyann) | 12 comments This is great! Lots of books I like & a few new to me that I've added to my "to read" shelf.
I'm going to add:
Helene Tursten's Irene Huss mysteries (she always gets overlooked in any list of Scandinavian writers, but I think she's great)
Martin O'Brien's Inspector Jacquot series, really good writing and very evocative of Provence.

Kate Ellis' Wesley Peterson series in which she manages to weave a contemporary detective story with a historical mystery (took a dip about #6-7, but back on course now)
And back in the USA, Laurie R. King's Kate Martinelli series.
And my favourite of all time, Marcia Muller; should be read in order, beginning with Edwin of the Iron Shoes (1977) and still going strong. Sharon McCone is a real original, who develops over time.
Has anyone mentioned dear Stephen Booth?

I'm not all that dear! In fact, I thought I was rather cheap. :) But I appreciate the thought, Jacky.

There are now 11 books in the Cooper & Fry series, and shortly a 12th (all being well - since I haven't finished writing it yet). They're all set in England's Peak District.

And the Myron Bolitar series..."

Thanks - I'm not familiar with Ridley Pearson but I'll check it out!
