The blurb is currently missing for this book, I have transcribed it here:
Every spring the itinerant preacher, Hell Fire, comes down from the hills with his coffin on his back into the St. Francis Valley in eastern Quebec to cry doom to the village of Stormaway. He performs to a rapt audience and leaves, much as the rotating seasons quicken the lives of the villagers, who are full of a bursting joy at the earth, at birth and laughter, at the business of seeding and haying, raising barns, auctioneering. For Dougal, the village teacher and philosopher, each day is an occasion to celebrate. So, too, for his neighbours: Milly-from-the-hill, who loves and comforts any man; Long George, who disdains work and sires eight bastards by his loving Missy; and old Hugh, who ruminates on the hotel veranda and dies blissfully.
But Stormaway has its turbulence and hardship. Dougal is locked in a joyless marriage to a savage shrew; the Pigman's wife dies in childbirth and he makes a final incredible act of homage to this woman he had loved and ignored.
The people in this refreshing novel are hardy and tough, vigorous and bawdy, and their story is an exuberant celebration of life.
Please can this be added? Thank you!!
