Potjy | 50 comments Wow! I thought my head would be exploded in the process, but the math did not kill me yet. :D

The best book I read for the fall challenge (but never claimed the oh-so-low points) is Devil in a Blue Dress (215 pages).

215 is Science & religion.

Can I read a book from Ender Saga by Orson Scott Card? It's a sci-fi, and I heard that it had many religion subtext.

Then 215 + 250 = 465

463 Spanish dictionaries
464 Not assigned or no longer used
465 Spanish grammar
466 Not assigned or no longer used
467 Spanish language variations

According to 467, can I use The Savage Detectives? It's originally written in Chilean Spanish.

Thank you, pjreads.

I agree that Orson Scott Card's Ender Saga is full of subtext about religion, especially [book:Speaker for Dead
, Xenocide and Children of the Mind. Any of his books work for DDC 215.

The Savage Detectives works for 467 and sounds like a great choice.

So glad the math did not explode you head -- hope you enjoy these books.

message 211: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 172 comments Okay, been trying to wrap my head around this task for a while, but I'm headed to the library again tomorrow so I thought I would try out a couple of ideas.

My 5-star read from fall was 240 pages, so for part A I found a book called Prayers and Poems of Inspiration, which my library has cataloged under 242.8. Does that count for being within the +/- 2?

For Part B my brain hurts a little more. On the one hand I have Languages, ranging from 488 Classical Greek Usage to 492 Afro-Asiatic Languages; Semitic. OR I have 988 to 990, General history of Guiana, Paraguay, Uruguay, and 'other areas.'

My library has nothing under those numbers, so in turning to fiction I was wondering if I could could stretch the 'language' to include something of culture? Specifically, I was thinking of The Angel or Bard The Odyssey of the Irish for 491, East Indo-European and Celtic languages.

OR, does anyone have any other suggestions? Thank you all for your help! I really like the idea of this task, I just wish my library had a somewhat broader selection. Or that I wasn't so picky about my highest rated books. :)

Coralie Would Half Past Human work for 173 Ethics of family relationships?
The blurb on the back cover reads -
Tinker was a Good Citizen of the hive, he had no choice. The time had come to give up his neuter status and become polarized. The Big Earth Society wanted Tinker to mate. But no one had prepared Tinker for sexual activation, nor for a waman like Mu Ren. From that moment on, Tinker was no longer a Good Citizen of the hive...

Nicki (luluminstrel) | 279 comments Hi pj
I've been through all my numbers again and my options include:
752 Color
753 Symbolism, allegory, mythology, legend
754 Genre paintings

Would Speaker for the Dead fit for symbolism? I haven't read it so not sure - this is a section about paintings.
If not, how about Girl with a Pearl Earring for Genre paintings? Or maybe any book with a colour in the title such as Aunt Dimity and the Deep Blue Sea for colour?

My other half is Sophie's World for 501 Philosophy & theory. I'm pretty sure that's OK but just double checking :)

I see Speaker for the Dead fitting 753 as allegory or mythology more than symbolism. Yes, definitely and enthusiastically--this is one of my favorite books ever. (Your other ideas for 752-754 are okay, too.)

Agree on Sophie's World for 501.

Angela | 917 comments Okay I have a question about this task.
My 5 star book I choose had 304 pages, so my choices were
302 Social interaction
303 Social processes
304 Factors affecting social behavior
305 Social groups
306 Culture & institutions

I am going with 306 and using Ask Me About My Divorce: Women Open Up About Moving On
by Candace Walsh (306.89) which is 250 pages.

If so, I go up 250 and am now at 556
554 Earth sciences of Europe
555 Earth sciences of Asia
556 Earth sciences of Africa
557 Earth sciences of North America
558 Earth sciences of South America
or
804 Not assigned or no longer used
805 Serial publications
806 Organizations
807 Education, research, related topics
808 Rhetoric & collections of literature

Is this right?

If so could I choose 807? The Book Club Bible: The Definitive Guide That Every Book Club Member Needs
by Foreword by Lionel Shriver
OR Good Books Lately: The One-Stop Resource for Book Groups and Other Greedy Readers by Ellen Moore

All your choices are fine -- enjoy!

Edited 2 hours later:
Very sorry -- I didn't check the math in your post.

302 - 306 and 554 - 558 (or 552 - 556) are okay; but the other choices are: 052 - 056 or 054 - 058

Ask Me About My Divorce: Women Open Up About Moving On
by Candace Walsh is fine.

See post 231 for more.

scherzo♫ (pjreads) Angela wrote: "Thanks pjreads...just was having a difficult time with the math!! "

oops ... sorry, I didn't look at the numbers in your post, just the books and the categories.

302 - 306 and 554 - 558 (or 552 - 556) are okay; but the other choices are: 052 - 056 or 054 - 058
052 Serials in English
053 Serials in other Germanic languages
054 Serials in French, Occitan & Catalan
055 In Italian, Romanian & related languages
056 Serials in Spanish & Portuguese
057 Serials in Slavic languages
058 Serials in Scandinavian languages

The options for serials are:
1. Additional moves as described in post #32
2. Read a book originally written in the specified language
3. Read a book which was originally published serially (in any language)
4. Read at least 300 pages in any magazines -- count only pages you read, omitting any that you skip

Angela | 917 comments B. For The Second Book, Imagining The Dewey Decimal Numbers As A Circle With 000 Following 999, Move Forward Or Backward 250 Numbers (+/-2) From The Subject Chosen For The First Book (OR Forward Or Backward From Your Original Page Count Number.).
EX. If You Decided To Read A Book About Oriental Philosophy (181) Then 250 Decimals Forward = 431, 250 Decimals Backward = 931 So Your Choices Would Be...
429 Old English (Anglo-Saxon)
430 Germanic Languages German
431 German Writing System & Phonology
432 German Etymology
433 German Dictionaries
929 Genealogy, Names, Insignia
930 History Of Ancient World
931 History Of Ancient World China
932 History Of Ancient World Egypt
933 History Of Ancient World Palestine

So how does 250 decimals backwards equal 929-933. I am confused by the original example given (wouldn't 181-250=-69)...so confused by this task!!!

So you mean any series? Does not matter what genre?

In the imagined circle 000 is preceded by 999, so after reaching 001 in moving backwards 250 from 181, you count 69 more numbers: 000, 999, 998, ... 931.

Moving backwards from numbers less than 250, it helps to think of them as 1249, 1248, etc. In the case of 181, it would be 1181-250=931.

I hope this helps.

Books "originally published serially" are books which were first printed chapter by chapter in magazines or other periodicals (or online).
Examples:
books by Charles Dickens
The Three Musketeers
some graphic novels by Neil Gaiman (for this task, I'll accept any of his books, plus he's a GR author)
Plague Zone (not a book I know)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (gruesome)
westerns by Zane Gray
The Green Mile Vol. 1 - The Two Dead Girls

Liz M PJReads, for Dewey Decimal #302--Social Interaction, can I use Dinner with Friends?

It just seemed to me that a play is the perfect fictional format for the category & the storyline of this play, the examination of the married lives of two couples and how one couple's breakup effects the other's stability, also seemed appropriate.

If length is an issue, I am planning on pairing it with a serial novel (Dewey Decimal #52), and they all seem to run rather long.
