Thanks for this task! I found another book I'm excited to read that I never would have even looked for. I'm still working on my 336- public finance. Anyone know any good books on taxes, national debt, or lotteries? My library has some, but they seem a little dated. But my +250 is 586- seedless plants and I found Oaxaca Journal Oliver Sacks journey to Mexico in search of ferns. It might be my first book for the winter challenge.

message 56: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Btw for the magazine/serial one, you could read the classic Vanity Fair. It was written as a serial.

And I think you could read a nonfiction about a top publishing company, newspaper company or maybe the coveted Pulitzer? that part would be up to pjreads.

And PJ, thanks for this task. I haven't figured out my books yet cause I'm waiting for the fall to finish and then explore all my fives.

Other question though, if I fell into the christian institutions -- what type of fiction books could fit into that task? Would a christian fiction fit? A nonfiction book about a saint? Or would it have to be more focused on the church and/or pilgrimages?

Mary Higgins Clark has a series about a lottery winner. And David Baldacci wrote The Winner which is about a lottery winner - its a great suspense/mystery.

Publishing, newspapers, Pulitzer belong in 070.

For christian institutions, a fiction book whose major theme is related to Christianity is okay. All of your suggestions work for fiction.

Non-fiction books need to follow assigned DDC numbers 1 DEC "related to" DDC subject applies to NF as well as fiction

If it's fiction, that's fine; non-fiction would fit only the assigned DDC number. 1 DEC Yes for fiction and NF

message 65: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments I know I am belaboring my point, but I want to make sure this works -- it is 2 fiction books (hope that is ok):

This is my first challenge and so I used one of my 5 star books, Midwives, which is 374 pages. - 2 in Dewey Decimal is: 374 is Adult Education and when I searched that DD #, there were a lot of books about book clubs. I'd like to read The dead of midnight A thriller which is a mystery about a book club.

372/373 minus 250 = 122/123 (previously: Infinity). 126 is The Self and I planned to use Genesis by Bernard Beckett Genesis (previously approved in post 26)

Would this work?

Thanks!

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Ummm... I just found a KILLER combination: Catching Fire has 391 pages.

390 - Customs, etiquette, folklore
391 - Costume & Personal Appearance
392 - Customs of life cycle & domestic life
393 - Death customs

AND (391+250=641)

640 - Home economics & family living
641 - Food & drink
642 - Meals & table service

I got clothes and food! WOO HOO! I was SOOOO WORRIED!!! I don't know what I'll read yet... I know these are silly, but would Ripped at the Seams and Crush du Jour work? Or a cookbook for the second part? I'll go check out the sections of my library, too... I love both topics, fiction or nonfiction.

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments OK librarians, I tried to just physically go to the library with a list of page counts from my 5 star books, and walk through this - my library uses Library of Congress, gggrrr! Is there anywhere online to find a standard crosswalk??? Should I just use fiction books? I read a lot of non-fiction, and one of my 5* page counts lines up in the Wiki DD list with a subject that I need to read a book about, I just can't find the second book.

I found the link to Cait's library back in message 11 really helpful. (My library uses Dewey, but doesn't allow you to search by call number.) It doesn't have every book, but if you plug in the call number the hits will give you a pretty good idea of what's in the category. If you think of a book that might work but it doesn't come up in Cait's library system, google the title (in quotes) + dewey call number.

That might not be the best way to do it, but it worked for me!

For Gospels, you could read
Lamb The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore.

Also, check out David Maine. I've only read The Preservationist (which I really liked), but I'm also looking forward to reading Fallen and The Book of Samson.

message 82: by Jamie (new)

Jamie After not participating in a couple of the seasonal challenges, I'm thinking of trying it again. Looking at my 5-star books for this task, I've gone with The Goose Girl (400 pgs.) and have chosen Dulac's The Snow Queen, and Other Stories from Hans Christian Andersen (398) and Man's Search for Meaning (150.19). They both look great to me!

message 83: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments I went and scoped out the 390-392 and 640-642 sections at the library today... There are some AWESOME books to choose from! The 641 section is cookbooks, and my library had like 6 tall shelves full of them! These are the ones I'm considering:

390s
* 391 - Dress Your Best: The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That's Right for Your Body by Clinton Kelly and Stacy London (of What Not To Wear fame)
* 391 - Costume, 1066-1966 by John Peacock
* 391 - Costume and Fashion in Color, 1760-1920 by Jack Cassin-Scott

640s
* 640 - The One-Minute Home Organizer: Making Your Home Beautiful and Your Life Clutter Free by Emilie Barnes
* 641.3374 - Chocolate: The Consuming Passion by Sandra Boyton
* 641.34 - Fruit the Ripe Pick: Fruit Selection Made Easy! by T.M. Gorman
* 641.5973 - Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food by Jessica Seinfeld (Jerry's wife)
* Any of several lovely-looking cookbooks...

Orson Scott Card's books are good for 222:
Sarah
Rebekah Women of Genesis
Stone Tables
Rachel and Leah Women of Genesis

and The Book Of Job As A Greek Tragedy is good for 223.

Nicki (luluminstrel) | 279 comments Help! I've been back and forth and added and taken away on all the different options and to get a decent choice for the second half I need to use:

684 Furnishings & home workshops

Any suggestions? It's actual workshops, so I can't use a soft furnishings non-fiction book

message 88: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments You can do 682-686, right?

682 Small forge work (Blacksmithing)
683 Hardware & household appliances
684 Furnishings & home workshops
685 Leather, fur, related products
686 Printing & related activities

Have you gone to the library and looked at those sections? Printing might not be TOO bad...

If your number is 684 you can go plus or minus 2 numbers so your range would be:

682 Small forge work (Blacksmithing)
683 Hardware & household appliances
684 Furnishings & home workshops
685 Leather, fur, related products
686 Printing & related activities

That gives a little more room for finding fiction books that meet on of the criteria. :-)

message 90: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Yeah, I'm trying to think of books with blacksmiths and workshops and stuff, and all I'm coming up with are A Knight's Tale (which was NOT adapted from a book) and Home Improvement/Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor.... Also not a book...

Blacksmithing... I'm thinking fantasy... I just can't think of anything! Grrr! Good luck!

(I was thinking The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, though that may not be enough about locks.)

Also, for printing (686), there is some interesting non-fiction about Gutenberg, etc.

Michelle | 106 comments The Princess Bride was my favorite read from the fall challenge, it was 456 pages long. So...

(+2) 458 is Standard Italian Usage, for which I would like to read The Shape of Water by Andrea Camilleri (fiction). It was originally written in Italian by and Italian author and takes place in Italy...

then subtract 250+2 and I get 210, which is Natural Theology. For this number, the only book my library system seems to have is Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion by David Hume (non-fiction), which seems interesting enough.

Does that work?
