Laurel I am wanting to read this in partnership with one of Michael Pollan's books for a book group discussion. Which would be best? I love Kingsolver, and this book makes me love her more. I think it should be read by everyone!

Ann My husband read "In Defense of Food" at the same time I was reading "Animal Vegetable Miracle." We always had great conversations at the end of the day about each author's takes on FOOD and the way our culture trivializes, villifies, and alientates us from our food. The pair made for good discussion in our household.

Boyd I'm just starting this book after already reading Omnivore's Dilemma. They'd definitely make a good pairing. I haven't read any of Pollan's other works, so I don't know if he covers a lot of the same ground in Defense and Botany as he does in Omnivore's. The only word of caution from me would be that Omnivore's is large and (at times) dense. You're going to be asking a lot of your book club to do both of these books.

Lauryl I did just the opposite...I read "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" and now I'm reading "The Omnivore's Dilemma"...it's almost like they're made for each other. A lot of the subjects that are touched on in AVM are researched in depth in OD.

Jennifer I've read both Omnivore's Dilemma, and In Defense of Food, and I definitely think O's D should be read first, and also that it partners very well with the Kingsolver book. IDOF is a much shorter book, however, so it depends what you're looking for. I think Omnivore's Dilemma is the better book.

Kay I agree with J, Lauryl, and Boyd that Omnivore's Dilemma goes best with Animal, V, M. (I read Botany of Desire. Although I haven't read In Defense of Food, my husband who read both Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food told me In Defense of Food doesn't cover as much.)

Sarah I think a lot of his work would go well with it. One that comes to mind is "Second Nature: A Gardener's Education", which is about Pollan's own experience in putting in his own garden.

Lisa I would pair it with the Omnivore's Dilemma because both novels are accounts of person journeys of food.

Michele Definitely Omnivore's Dilemma, but after you read that you have to read In Defense. They are both such informative books, and I didn't feel like he was pushing an agenda, just informing.

Omnivore's Dilemma is too similar, and overdose may happen. Food Rules by Pollen would go better.
