Well Gabi my grandmother Dafni who was quite a formidable person used to say " Το φοβο μου να 'χουνε" when referring to her husband and three sons which roughly translates that she felt they were better behaved if they were a bit in awe of her. She was true female power looong before there was women's lib going around. I think she was on to something!

Great picture Joanie! You'll blend in very well at the university!

message 413: by Robyn (new)

Robyn | 387 comments I adore Joanna Lumley - I'd think it was a compliment :)

message 414: by [deleted user] (new)

Exactly! Gabi. Game set an match.

message 415: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually I think she's 'absolutely fabulous'
she did a great documentary recently on seeing the Northern Lights. Oh my..aurora borealis, you are truly celestial.

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Joanna Lumley? Sounds like a girl in my 4th grade class (meaning, I wouldn't recognize Jo-Jo if I fell over her).

message 417: by Robyn (new)

Robyn | 387 comments That is a shame - Absolutely Fabulous is a top comedy - she has done other things...

but as the champion of the drinking, smoking, drugging socialite with zero conscience and to hell with everyone, that character is hard to beat.

In real life though she has another side to her:

Robyn | 387 comments Hmmm quiet in here lately - is Duchess Deb not dazed or confused anymore?

Deb - You can upload Picassa (mine are from there) but you have to go into your picture in Picassa and enable 'sharing' - open the photo and on the right-hand side look for "Photo Reuse" - the default is "Do not allow reuse" so you have to change it.

Click on edit and there are 3 options - I chose Allow Commercial Use. Then you Right Mouse click and get the properties address. Remember to put the (img src=" on one side of the URL and "/) on the other side - but use < and > instead of brackets.

This is a picture of Shidu - a place a few hours by train from Beijing.

Robyn...dazed and confused is not enough (last week of term....stunned and numb is more like it. Doesn't help to have a principal who.....no.....I'll email you!)

I know I haven't posted much lately....last term busyness plus a couple of other projects that sucked up my time. Just letting you all know that I am NOT leaving you....just going off on Year 6 camp in 24 hours time, for 4 days (yep, it's that time of year again).

Ah, the old teachers-sneaking-booze sequence. Harkens me back!

Anyway, good to see you back in the STREAMS section here. I wrote a long and meandering New England States about Thanksgiving this a.m., but I pulled it for some work.

Are you doing anything different this trip, or is it so regimented and traditional you could chaperone in your sleep?

message 426: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Debbie, you are a brave lady. I never wanted to do the field trips when my kids were little, I made my husband go instead.

Carol | 10410 comments NE ,School is not out until 24th of December, that is late. I think school is out here December 21st-Jan.4th.

Good for you Debbie, Are you going on a cruise?

message 430: by Debbie, sardonic princess of cheerfulness (new)

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 6389 comments Mod
Nah....too tired! Still got all my Christmas shopping to do, and my son's birthday in 2 days, and then I have to prepare for a change in teaching level....7 year olds next year instead of 10/11 yr olds! Also, teachers can't afford cruises!!

message 431: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
That's right. We're poor. And 7-year-olds! I hope you're in nurturing mode!

message 432: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments How old is our son going to be? Have you taught 7 year olds before? They are work, but a lot of fun also. They still are in awe of teachers. They are not jaded creatures yet.

message 433: by Debbie, sardonic princess of cheerfulness (new)

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 6389 comments Mod
Where to start.....
The son will be 23...he and his girlfriend are coming over the hill for a birthday dinner with family....still trying to decide what to cook
I have been moved to the middle area of the school because there is a particularly tough bunch of Year 3 boys....I am obviously the school rottweiler! I don't think any of them are in awe of anything. I teach in a low decile school and some of these kids come from family backgrounds that are close to feral. They are not only jaded, but overtired, underfed and barely loved. However, they will be slightly easier than some of their older brothers and sisters I have been teaching lately!! I plan to like them into submission.....that and open their eyes to things they didn't know. If I can clear away a little of the fog of ignorance they live in I'll be happy.

message 434: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Debbie I appreciate the job elementary teachers do. You all set the tone and love of learning for a child. I feel the grade school teacher is very important as all teachers are. I know from first hand experience, my son had wonderful teachers, my nephew had a teacher that almost killed his love of school. I think most teachers deserve medals, especially if you teach in a depressed area. Good luck with your endeavor and love the crap out of them.

"Miss! How do you write 22?"
"Miss, I wet my pants".

They are cute, after a fashion, but I like feisty and cognitively aware! Still.....a change is as good as etc.
I went out to my daughters place this arvo to watch a DVD with her....we got 15 minutes into it and discovered that her pedigree Airedale bitch had escaped onto the farm! A very tense half hour later, after combing the roadsides in my car, and then roaming farm tracks (on the 4-wheeler farm bike....me perched on the back) and splashing through 2 foot deep puddles composed mostly of cow sh**t, we found her in the shade by a creek 3 paddocks away chewing on something dead. BOY was she in trouble!!! My daughter in a rage is a sight to behold! Wonder where she got it from? Must have been my Irish great-grandmother!

Great fun when driven by an angry and upset 21 year old! Especially when you have your knees wrapped around your ears in an effort to keep the splashes of liquidised manure off your legs!
