Oh, right, right. Ahem ... I must admit it has been a very looong time since I have read the Cliff Notes ... the fair good work of Mr. Clements... I forgot Tom was a con man.

:)

Did you say CLEMENTS???? I am shocked and, as required by law, appalled.

And I suppose "The Night Before Christmas" was written by C. Clemens Moore (or Less)???

**hangs head in shame and goes to stand in the corner with the dunce cap. oh, the shame ... the shame :(**

That's OK. In another thread I noted the author of Prince Caspian Sea as being C.L. Lewis. Got room in that corner?

And I wonder what the origins of "dunce cap" are.

Great story, Donna! This means DUNCE is an eponym, n'est-ce pas? I collect eponymns and keep them in a window with southern exposure...

On a writer's site I frequent, an Australian woman posted this joke which showcases the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand (which I didn't really know existed). Probably, Debs, you've heard it. But just in case, here it is:

Helen Clarke, Prime Minister of New Zulland, is rudely awoken at 4am by the telephone.

'Hillen, its the Hilth Munister here. Sorry to buther you at this hour bet there es an emergency! U've just received word thet the Durex fectory en Auckland hes burned to the ground. Et's istimated thet the entire New Zulland supply of condoms well be gone by the ind of the week!!!'

PM: 'Shut - the economy wull niver be able to cope weth all those unwanted babies - wi'll be ruined!'

Hilth Munister: 'We're going to hef to shup seme in frum... Brutain...?'

PM: 'No chence!! The Poms will hev a field day on thus one!'

Hilth Munister: 'Whut abet Austreylia?'

PM: 'I'll call Kevin Rudd - tell hum we need one million condoms; ten unches long und eight unches thuck! Thet way they'll continue to respect the All Blacks!!'

Three days later a delighted Hillen rushes out to open the boxes. She finds condoms; 10 unches long; 8 unches thuck, all coloured green and gold. With small writing on each one...

'Made in Australia - Size: Medium'

Yeah...heard it before, except that it is the PM of Australia sending to NZ for the necessaries)....but your source seems to think we sound mostly like South 'Efricans' - although the Hulth Munister sounds about right - New Zild as she is spoke!! Has been a friendly (mostly sporting) rivalry between Aust and NZ for years....google Bledisloe Cup!!

Seems the All-Blacks have won the last 5. Looks like they lead the series, too. Such excellent rugbyites!

Go to the picture you want to insert. Right click on it, go to Properties. Copy the URL.

Then write it like this, only using < and > instead of { and }

{img src="paste the URL here"}

Me, too. I think there's something wrong with your link, Debbie. I right clicked on the ex to get the link, then plopped it into my browser window. It doesn't get me to an existing page.

message 169: by Debbie, sardonic princess of cheerfulness (new)

It is a pic out of my pictures folder, not off the net....does it have to be published in a web page before it goes on here?

message 170: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 16546 comments Mod
This website can't reach into your computer to link us to the photo. Suppose you weren't online? And we don't have the option of uploading a picture directly here to the website.

So yes, the picture has to be somewhere out on the net for the link to work.

You can link to a picture already existing on the net, or there are places that will host your picture and allow you to link to it. I use www.photobucket.com . You can set up an album there and upload all the pictures you want from your computer. Then you can link to them here using the method I showed you.

I've been using photobucket for several years. Works great, and it's free.

Funny story is, we considered naming out daughter that exact name for that exact show, too. In fact, it was #1 for awhile but ultimately came in second to our final choice. How weird a coincidence would THAT have been? Co-moderators with co-named for co-reasons daughters? Synchronicity!

Yaaaayyy.......2 weeks holiday starts today!!!!! I could see the fireworks going off at your places in America to celebrate with me.......oh....is that right....Independence Day? Ok.
I think I need this break after reading what I just posted in Word Associations! Why do I find it harder to be tolerant the older I get? I used to be able to suffer fools gladly......
I am in dire danger of becoming a grumpy old curmudgeoness!! Cures anyone?

message 189: by Gail (new)

Gail Loved that we are celebrating with you as yu start your 2-week hols. I've a question for you: What is the schools schedule like in Oz? Here we hav, as a general rule, the academic year starting late August; a 5-day week-end for our Thanksgiving Day, approximately 2 weeks off over Christmas and New Years, a week off around Easter, and then out in early June for the year. Some U.S. areas get a week off in, oh, late February, but I don't think that happens much any more. Just wondered how your year compares.

As for the g.o.c. disease, I don't think there is a cure...although I know I became a lot more cheerful after retirement. Not more tolerant, by any means, but it didn't make me unhappy so much.

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 6389 comments Mod
Oh lawdy!! Another 15 years of G.O.C disease??!! I lived in Oz for a few years in my 20's....but I returned to NZ 20 years ago (also referred to as 'downunder'). We start our academic year at the beginning of February and have 4 10-week terms with 2 weeks holiday in April, July and Sept/Oct. We finish the year around about Dec 18-20 (6 week summer holiday). Easter generally falls during the April holiday and apart from that there are a few public one-day holidays (Waitangi Day, Queens Birthday, Anzac Day, Labour Day) that give us the odd 3-day weekend! I think I just need a change...in danger of burnout....being passionate about your 'vocation' puts you at risk of that eventually! A year travelling the globe would do the trick but I am having trouble finding a sponsor!!!!

Curmudgeons? Did someone call curmudgeons? The Good Wyfe says I'm King of said kingdom. So maybe it's an age thing (like wisdom).

Only what's the connection with the Word Association thread? Was there a suffering fool there? A Shakespearean fool, maybe?

Wondering,
ME (or, NE)
