Prabha | 70 comments "but the mental image of a man of indeterminate age standing on the roof pontificating about prepositions WITHOUT a bathrobe on just popped into my head!!"

I love it! Debbie you're just priceless! How well you described NE! Now if we can just add the virtual image of the moon to that visual, it would be purrrrrrrrfect!!!

I love you guys (and gals). Virtual friendships, and real friends. Maureen I'm honoured to be your only Malaysian friend. Deb and NE, I love the way you look out for me when I'm MIA - which I have been of late due to upheavals at work :(

If this was Facebook I would have been able to share with all of you in this group a virtual toast: To the guys and gals of Language and Grammar @ Goodreads - long may you pontificate!

message 55: by Prabha (last edited Apr 19, 2008 12:47PM) (new)

Prabha | 70 comments Moe, sadly, no. May be out of a job soon, which I suppose is better than working under someone of questionable integrity. Choices, choices. Ah well, this too shall pass...

Believe me....far better to be jobless (temporarily!!) than to work under someone of questionable integrity, ethics etc....

Right. Before I become completely non-u around here....I promise to offer no more comment on a political system that supposedly has no impact on my life halfway around the world (cue hollow laughter).
Autumn has arrived here with a bump....almost overnight. Within the space of a few days we have gone from overnight temps of 13*C and daytime highs of 21 or so, to 1 - 14. The trees turned overnight and are now sporting their autumn tones, and the gutters are full of leaves. There is even a dusting of icing sugar on the ranges this morning!

hope the next job doesn't require a compromise of ethics
i've been in that situation a few times-it stinks

I love holidays! Today I went shopping with my sister (a rare occurence) and I got these darling little red suede ankle boots with lace-up backs and heels you could kill with. They are purely for effect....and they lift my spirits! Can you see me smiling?!!!

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

I can see you smiling all the way in Texas!

"Killer Queen" (Loved Freddie Mercury....saw him live in concert in Sydney, 1985)!!
Random thought...popped into me head whilst brushing my teeth! I am a 'feeder'. I feed my body (preferably avocados and smoked salmon), my skin (moisturisers), my brain (books), my soul (music)...and my cat (Dine Liver and Bacon).

My stream of consciousness was feeling verbally battered, so it was rendered temporarily speechless.

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 6389 comments Mod
Oh....and if anyone is looking for me, I'll be sitting on the Otto Man (all by myself) in the dumpster, getting pissed on triple Black Russians! And, like the Muskrat, I will be reading a book titled "The Complete Uselessness of Everything"

message 70: by [deleted user] (last edited May 02, 2008 07:49PM) (new)

it's that evil haters club donna
it leads to verbal missteps
deb i love eeyore but not on you

message 71: by Debbie, sardonic princess of cheerfulness (new)

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 6389 comments Mod
Yeah OK...but I don't expect you to dribble my poison! (Wasting it anyway)! Bring whatever you like....preferably with something high-calorie and tasty - but hold the chillies! And I knew there was a reason I couldn't take the leap and join the Haters Club...hate is not a good thing. Now a Lovers Club I might show some interest in!!!!
(Pours another Black Russian)
Doan't yoo fink sho?

we may not be the best adverts for the love cult
we're sort of the bulls in the love cult shop

but there's good people there, sweet people

like...

there's a summer deb, she's the moderator
she's sweet

and sally, she's a little salty but also sweet

and who else donna?

all the rest are...sweet

they even started a topic on courtesy that turned into a love fest for golden retreivers

The Haters' Club looks like just another Bitch and Moan Club (of which any teacher already belongs, being employed by that B&M staple: a school). Who needs it? As for loving sparkly toilet bowls, I don't think I'm ready to stop and smell the Lysol, thank you.

Soon there will be a club for everything here. The Mustard Group. The Anemone Club. The People Afraid to Hiccup Bunch. And so on.

I think you may be right! Anyway...who needs another group....this one has it all!

It's Mothers Day and I have made my own breakfast and got no phone calls (but then I am on dial-up!)....anyone feel sorry for me yet? No? Ok.....my son is in Australia and has probably forgotten that the two Mothers Days are on different Sundays, my step-daughter died almost 3 years ago, and my lovely daughter (who does live locally) informed me yesterday that she was having a wild night out and a sleep-in so not to expect anything before lunchtime! The book I ordered for MY mother didn't arrive in time so I will have to go round there now with card and excuses. Someone kick me up the backside please and tell me to stop being so self-pitying?!!

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

Consider yourself kicked up the backside :)

Happy Mother's Day, Debbie!

Thanks....I needed that! Mall just phoned....us nuns in the Sound of Music have to wear gold wedding bands and of course she doesn't have one (dress rehearsal tonight). So she had a gold earring she thought might do the trick...it went on but......you guessed it!!! "Mum...I have an earring stuck on my finger!!!!" Bless her little cotton socks! Hells bells....I had better scare one up from somewhere too! Threw mine away.

message 81: by [deleted user] (new)

I have been a long time fan of Sound of Music! Break a leg!

I have confidence in sunshine,
I have confidence in rain.
I have confidence that spring will come again!
Besides, which you see
I have confidence in me.

&

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into Springs
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad.

"The Hills (around Christchurch) are alive, with the Sound of Mu-sick....." Julie Christie and the ever-lovin' Alps. Infectious songs, though. Give them that.

Happy Mother's Day to you, Debbie, and to all the other Mothers in a different time zone (that is, who have a jump on us). Here it's Mother's Day Eve, only 7:15 p.m. in fact. It's the number one day for long distance phone calls in America, according to Ma (get it?) Bell. No surprise there. Forget your mother at your own risk. I'll ring mine up after my trail run. "Pant, pant, Happy Mother's Day, Mom, pant, pant, trouser..."

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

yes happy mother's day deb
my rotten fink kids will probably forget to call me too
my youngest hasn't sent me pics of the baby in 6 months! (my mother did though)
but i remember 2 mom's days ago, they arrived at my door, my youngest son with the first vase of flowers he'd bought for me himself, the other with some picked ones and pistachio ice cream i think and the daughter called from "A" school in virginia
my mom and sister got nicely drunk on cheap red wine
my 15 year old foster daughter called us all nuts but was happy to have a family around and we took pictures first of everybodies feet, then their hands, then their noses, including the dogs
it's a strange and hilarious bunch of pics
but one of the nicest mom's day memories ever for me
this year ahhh...i'll call my mom, my step-mother, talk to my sister,
and my daughter and i are planning a nice lunch
and the two grandkids i live with and i are going to sneak over to the commissary next door and get their mom something a little later

Julie Christie did a version of the "Sound of Music"? Stage version, maybe? Or is that just another name for Julie Andrews? I'm all confus-ed NE!

message 88: by Debbie, sardonic princess of cheerfulness (new)

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 6389 comments Mod
No...Julie Andrews did the movie....Julie Christie is also an actress but not of the singing variety (I don't think).

Oops. I wrote about Dr. Zhivago in "New England States..." and so my mind is awash with a young Julie Christie. Mmmmmmmmm. Nice, that. Verrrrrry nice.

Oh I miss moe here....her lovely comment has disappeared from my writing as if she had never been and now no-one likes my poem! (Actually I don't think I do either....I am not naturally introspective).
In the midst of performances now and I am building theatrical superstitions daily...the show will bomb unless we four nuns practice a particular harmony just before curtain up, I say a quick Hail Mary (indoctrination!) and I am wearing my lucky garter under the habit!!! One of the most amusing things for me (as a newbie to all this) is the discovery that most of the artistic temperament on display comes from the stage crew and the sound techies!!!

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

I second . . . and third . . . and fourth the missing of moe. I feel like one of the founding fathers of L&G has . . . oh, I can't even come up with the words to express it :(

I am so glad you are enjoying your performances Debbie! Theater is something one can never fully explain to someone who hasn't been part of it in some form or another. I did a lot of high school productions & am considering getting into the local community group here. Maybe when my son is a little bit older . . .

I did high school and college theater. I'd jump at the chance to do it again. Once bit...

Maybe that's why I went into college teaching. A lecture is performance.

I was the Sheriff in Stephen Crane's The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky (Grade 5). The girl who played my wife would go on to ice skate in the Olympics (but she didn't win anything).

I took liberties with the script during the two performances in front of the school. The liberties were funnier than Crane, if not quite as classic.
