There actually is a Leif Erikson Day, but Columbus still grabs all the attention.

Of course, Italians are more interesting than Vikings. Though I suspect Ruth may be divided on this issue.

Italian FOOD is more interesting. Mmmm.

We are indeed a house divided. I'm Italian, he's Norwegian.

But even Leif will admit that Italian food is more interesting.

There's a joke that in Norwegian cooking all the food is white.

Norwegian fare is definitely less than inspiring....my late Norwegian father-in-law served it up from time to time....blechhh!!

Some Norwegian food is absolutely delicious. But there's not a lot of variety. And an awful lot of potatoes and fish.

Had another lovely few hours in the capital on ballet biz. Saw the opening night of the Nutcracker season (Gary Harris version - set in a childrens' ward 1930's)...clever and funny and beautiful.
Gary (Artistic Director for last 9 years) is leaving and his replacement has just been announced....an American ballet star from ABT - Ethan Steifel....any of you heard of him?

message 709: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
I've been listening, but no. Ballet stars, for whatever reason, don't make blips on my admittedly rudimentary radar.

message 713: by Ken, Moderator (new)

If a cat bit me without reason, I'd show it the door. "See that door, kiddy kat?" I'd say. Then I'd shut it.

In was grooming him and obviously hit a sore spot....I am at the ballet co office in Wgtn (playing hookie) and hand is dreadfully swollen...must get it seen to wehen I get home tonight. Sorry about typos...fingers on right hand a bit stiff and sore......

Ruth | 16546 comments Mod
Yegawds, woman. Get thyself to the doc. Animal bites can be dangerous.

message 716: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Yes, you may need shots and/or antibiotics. They may ask to see the cat, too.

message 717: by Savvy (new)

Savvy (savvysuzdolcefarniente) | 1458 comments Oh Debbie... I'm so sorry!!! This must be so uncomfortable and painful!
Cats are wonderful, but very apt to bite or scratch...I still have a scar on my palm from childhood when a kitten that I was holding, frightened by a dog, tore into me!

message 718: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Debbie I hope you got the hand seen to by now. I know that can be painful, that is why I don't want a cat . I was bit by one and it was not pleasant.

Midnight here and just home from A&E....had one dose of intravenous antibiotics and have to go back for another in the morning (it had started tracking apparently). Still have the canula in my arm so not anticipating a very sound sleep!

message 720: by Scribble (new)

Scribble Orca (scribbleorca) | 631 comments That sounds as serious as I feared. Not tetanus, thank goodness. But antibiotics...I hope you have taken something as well for the pain. And eat yoghurt when you wake up in the morning. Good night, sleep tight.

message 721: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Oh Debbie I am so sorry I was so flippant. I know animal bites are bad. You take care of yourself. Next time you groom him wear gloves.

Thanks everyone....and I am definitely not at school tomorrow! Doc says 3 days but I reckon once I'm on oral antibiotics I can go back.....

message 723: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Don't push it. If he says take a week, do it. Your body needs to recoup. Drink chamomile tea to help you relax. If you get stomach upset from medication try yogurt to replenish the good bacteria as GN suggested, and to stave off a yeast infection from the antibiotics as I am sure you know.

Not much....still sore and red and swollen (google cellulitis). But it has stopped spreading and the fever is down.....I am resting at home reading Dear Fatty by Dawn French (perfect!) and will stay at home tomorrow too....

Right hand Ruth....and they put the tetanus booster in the top of that arm.....bit sore now! I wish I could take a week GN, but the school only has a limited budget to pay for relievers....I will go back on Thursday no matter what.....

message 732: by Scribble (new)

Scribble Orca (scribbleorca) | 631 comments you did end up with a tetanus shot! Ouch. You poor sausage. I hope the kids play nice on Thursday. If not, Mac will draw claws!

message 733: by Jan (new)

You've sure had your share Debbie! Is kitty cat remorseful and playing sweet now?
Next time it might be worth it to take him/her to the groomers and let them spruce up kitty!

Three and a half teaching days to go......staff do tomorrow and 4 reports to finish on Sunday. The local branch of the NZEI (teachers union) had it's xmas function today....farewelling retirees and welcoming new graduates. One retiree had me wiping my eyes surreptitiously when she said,"I have memories of people who are no longer with us - some of whom I had huge respect for and will never forget, like Len Carman." (My dad, dead these 22 years.....). I have known her in this small town (25,000 people) for 15 years and she never knew I was his daughter. You think you are over something, and then someone sneaks under a chink in the armour that you didn't even know was there.....

message 739: by Carol (new)

Carol | 10410 comments Who said you have to have cracks in order for the light to get through. It is so true . What a nice way to remember your Dad . Get some rest. I am starting my day and I will think of you .

Very impressive that someone would remember you 22 years after your death -- someone outside family, I mean. It speaks VOLUMES about his character.

Enjoy Christmas vacay, Deb-bay. Mine (1 week only) starts at 2 p.m. on 23 December.

Thanks guys.....that's what blew me away too NE....I mean I knew he had genuine mana.....but to hear it acknowledged so long after he left was awesome..... What hurts is that there is a whole generation in my family who missed out on knowing him....my kids are his eldest grandchildren and they were only 6 mths and 2 yrs when he died......

message 743: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
Yeah, that's always sad. You feel like they've been robbed of memory, greatest of all life's riches. Were you lucky enough to know all four of your grandparents? I only knew one. The others were history before my mind could start remembering.

message 744: by Debbie, sardonic princess of cheerfulness (new)

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 6389 comments Mod
I was that lucky....I had all 4 til I was 12 years old.....and lost the last one just last year. I also knew 2 of my great grandparents til I was about 9 or 10. And you are so right about memories being life's greatest riches (especially when they are shared with you by someone like a grandparent).....which is why we all feel such horror at the thought of losing them to Alzheimers or the like.....

Like you, NE, I only knew one grandparent, a grandmother I was very close to. Now that I'm older I often wonder why my one living grandfather never made an effort to see my brother and me.

message 746: by Ken, Moderator (new)

Ken | 18714 comments Mod
That is weird. Mine was a beloved grandmother, too. Died in her 80s, so I was well along, married, a father, and all that jazz. My kids remember her, even. Nice, that.

My kids have memories of 1 grandmother (still alive) and 1 grandfather (died last year)....so they may not have had quantity, but they had quality......except for missing out on dad.
