Deb's Daze(d and Confused)
I'm going to send that one to my Kiwi friend who is currently holidaying in Christchurch...he's shaken but unhurt....will shortly be shaking with laughter!
The south island has taken a real caning.....a small plane taking tourists up to skydive near Fox Glacier crashed and burned today.....9 dead. Christchurch is in a state of emergency,,,,curfew in place and army mobilised. Will update my emergency kit tomorrow!!
My friend,on holidays in Christchurch, is going skydiving tomorrow...reckons he's survived the earthquake...now ready for anything! I told him about the crash.By the way Debbie, are you now leaving out consonants as well as vowels...Chch?
The Napier quake was a bit bigger than this one with huge loss of life .....no-one died in Chch (I know....no vowels.....it's Kiwi shorthand) and it's a miracle indeed when you hear what some of the survivors stories are!
Mum's cousins Trish and Maureen live there. Mum managed to contact Trish....she is in Hamner for the weekend so they don't yet know about the state of their place. No answer at Maureen's but phones are down so.....

Good morning, all. Chiming in to introduce myself a bit. I read the early posts of this thread and I guess I'll add: I have several bathrobes, I love language, my extended family 100 miles away is very difficult but I do love 'em, my three boys and husband are my glue, I have few close friends but have expanded my circle to include some people I've really grown to like and appreciate and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE goodreads and this group, which I discovered last week!
Hi, Kate! Did you think this was the Introduce Yourself thread, maybe? A little cut and paste'll do ya, if so! Anyway, even though you've made yourself at home already (see how easy it is?), WELCOME! Three boys is one shy of the crew I grew up with. As for myself, one boy and one girl was enough to have me waving the white flag....
Ditto for me one boy, one girl. I grew up with all girls except for a poor put upon dad. Deb how about you? I know you have at least one daughter , no fireworks or earth movement, how about sparing partners?
I think Deb is like me -- a one-of-each kind of parent. She's posted pics of each... Mallory and Alex Keaton, I think.
Does L & G have an introduce yourself thread? I can go there. I shall. I think I just got caught up in the posts on this one . . . cool posts, great folks, stream of consciousness subtitle . .
Glad all's well Debbie. I grew up in quaking, shaking southern California and have had numerous 'moving experiences' since kiddie-hood.But I think running into one of your 'gator' guys (or are they just in Aussieland?) would shake me up even more!
NZ is sooooo beautiful though!
Alex Keaton NE! I wish!! More his antithesis!! He does have charm and good looks though....should carry him some way....
I'm glad you love L&G Kate....so do I. Feel free to post ANYWHERE!!

Hey Gabi, I have a good friend in Hawaii from Australia, she is really nice. and as for you Debbie, since we have no television we haven't kept up with the news,we have had earthquakes here as well, and once we were at Yosemite and we felt one there. It is surely scary. I also have an ancestor who came from Christchurch, NZ, my great grandmother's husband. Anyway stay safe.
Hereabouts, fishers love little dogs and all manner of cats. So often we see "LOST CAT" signs affixed to telephone poles. Not being a cat guy, I'm tempted to post a pic of a smiling fisher above it, reading "FOUND CAT" with an arrow pointing to Mr. Fisher's tummy.
But I'm not that cruel.

The fisher (Martes pennanti), also referred to as fisher cat, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. It is closely related to but larger than the American Marten (Martes americana). Names derived from aboriginal languages include pekan, pequam, and wejack. The fisher is a forest-dwelling creature whose range covers much of the boreal forest in Canada to the northern fringes of the United States.[3]
Males and females are similar in appearance but the males are larger in size. Males are between 90 to 120 centimetres (35–47 in) in length and weigh between 3.5 to 5 kilograms (8–11 lb). Females measure 75 to 95 centimetres (30–37 in) and weigh between 2 to 2.5 kilograms (4–6 lb).[4] The fur of the fisher varies seasonally with fur being denser and glossier in the winter. During the summer the colors become more mottled as the fur goes through a molting cycle. Fishers prefer to hunt in full forest. While they are agile climbers most of their time is spent on the forest floor. They also prefer to forage where there is a lot of fallen dead wood on the forest floor. Fishers are omnivorous and will feed on a wide variety of small animals and occasionally fruits and mushrooms. They show a preference for Snowshoe Hare and are one of the few predators that can successfully hunt porcupine.[5] Despite their name, fishers seldom eat fish.
The reproductive cycle of the fisher lasts almost the entire year. Female fishers give birth to a litter of 3-4 kits in the spring. They nurse and care for their kits up until late summer when they are old enough to set out on their own. Shortly after giving birth, females enter estrus and leave their den to find a mate. Implantation of the blastocyst is delayed until the following spring when they give birth and the cycle is renewed.
I never heard of a fisher before. Like Jan, I kept trying to make sense of this using the image of a fisherman.
Hey Carol could you email that picture of the fisher cat, my daughter would love that pic. I thought NE was referring to a fisherman.
Go to photobucket and open an account it is free then type in fisher at the find stuff bar then a lot of different photos come up.
Sorry, folks. I assumed everyone knew this guy (thanks, Carol, for the link and purdy pic). Fishers have a rather nasty disposition -- similar to wolverines, though they're smaller.
We also have a lot of coyotes. They, too, are not above dining on Fifi or Meowser if the opportunity presents itself.
Nature has impinged on suburbia more and more in New England (the black bear, too, is returning) and people just don't understand that having an outdoor cat or little dog comes with its risks. Oh. And an open garbage can is a bad idea, too.

i know that is why i don't want a cat for my daughter, i remember having cats while growing up and if one died, i would be sobbing buckets of tears, even in adulthood i had some get run over and it still affected me. I know that this is a sad fact of life the deaths of animals but sometimes animals affect a person more than a human. does this sound cold and maudlin. nuff said
Believe it or not coyotes are on the prowl in Huntington Beach,Ca. HB is not in the outlaying section of the county either. I have not come across one as yet when I go to work early, but they tell me the coyotes are in the area.I guess the coyotes like the beach also. Do coyotes surf?
they do make alligator or crocodile wallets, and let's hear it for crocodile dundee. Also alligator belts. As an aside, did you guys ever hear that kids song about the smile from the crocodile, that is one creepy song.
I've been asleep through all this!! Yes we do have those singularly unnattractive bits of plastic in NZ.....crocs is a suitable name!
that reminds me how about when you have just gone swimming and are still wet and you sit on a leather couch, not that I have a leather couch.
Where is Rob's post saying it is 9.15 am or something gone? That is what I was responding to....
i deleted it, it did not go with the flow of the conversation, to reiterate i said that it is 9:52 in Hawaii. and to get a caffeine or your favorite beverage, it was my snide way to say get up. It is Sunday, here, what time is it NZ? This good reads site is doing something screwy to my entries. I did not see the posting of 656, nor 657, it must be Hawaii time? Sorry Debbie my bad, that is another one to place in the other thread. No school tomorrow. We are the only state that still has an inordinate number of days off, hence Labor Day is a Holiday tomorrow.
Debbie wrote: "I am already at school Carol!! I usually rock in about 7.20....get home about 5"OOO! That makes for a long day. Is it because you have the coaching after school?
