GETTING TO KNOW YOU
>
Where do you like to read?

I need a blanket on me.
In the summer I sit on the back porch at my table or put a chair in the sun and read there. :)

And that's just regular books. I listen to audiobooks anywhere and everywhere as well, especially while cooking and cleaning and driving.

I can usually squeeze in an hour or two of reading each day at home. I'm a left-side-of-the-couch person, and I prop my book on a pillow on my lap. Sometimes I also read sitting at the dining table (which reminds me of my mother; that was her go-to reading place when I was a kid).

I'm also a book-in-the-purse kind of girl. Sometimes I have to start a new book if the one I'm reading won't fit in my bag. I'm a slow public reader, though. I'm just too focused on my surroundings to really get into my book, especially on the train.

Katie, I'm a slider too. I read best with my feet up off the floor. And I may start out sitting on the couch (left, right, or middle) but before I know it I'm on my back. It's a good thing I live alone and don't have to share it. I do have a wing-backed chair I like to sit in to read, but my feet have to be up on the hassack.
And reading in bed is a given, but it's on the left side--the right is full of books. I have stopped reading in the tub, though.

:-) My favorite spots are the recliner in my family room, preferably with my new cat on my lap; and in bed. Also, I usually have a book with short chapters or vingettes going that I just leave in the bathroom. (I know, I hate to admit that one! It just may sound gross, but it's much easier than lugging my other book in there.)
I always have an audio book going in the car, and I'll take the book I'm currently reading with me whenever I go somewhere that I think I may have a wait of a few minutes. I have been known to switch to a bigger purse in order to slip in a book to a wedding ceremony. :-} (Not that I'd read during the service, but sheesh -- there is sometimes quite a long wait before the ceremony gets starts.)
I'm easily distracted too, so unless it's a really compelling book it's often hard for me to stay focused on it when I'm reading in a noisy public place.

The guys at the security check point at the baseball stadium always laugh when they check my bag. I always have at least one book and my knitting (we go way early to get a good parking place).

Oh yes, now that it's getting colder again it's time to pull out the knitting too! :-) It's much easier for me to knit in a loud public setting than it is to read. Knitting doesn't take as much concentration. (Unless I'm trying to follow a really complicated pattern...)

at home I read outside or on my "reading couch," which is our smaller couch, so I can lay on it kinda sideways with my head on one armrest (with a pillow) and my legs hanging off the other armrest. sounds weird, but it is soooo comfy....
And, of course, I always carry a book with me. Really, what else is a purse for??

Like many, I keep a book with me wherever I go. You never know when you might be able to sneak in some reading! I also always have a couple of books on disc uploaded to my iPod for walking the dog, doing chores around the house, etc.

i've also recently started keeping an audiobook on my iphone for when i'm in the car, and i always have a book in my purse. i've been like this all my life- when i was a little kid, i don't think anyone would have recognized me without my nose in a book! my mom once remarked that she was concerned i might be reading too much. too much! i don't think that's possible. ;)

Ditto.

If you figure that out, let me know please!

Wow, okay, I can do almost all of those except while watching tv. I have tried before, but I get distracted by commercials.

Historically, I've gotten the BULK of my reading done while commuting, which is probably why I haven't been getting as much done lately. During the last month of my pregnancy my husband was driving me to and from work because the bus was more than I could handle at that enormously pregnant stage (so no reading). And now that my baby is here and I'm on maternity leave, if I'm not busy attending to her I'm too tired to read more than a few pages at a time before I go cross-eyed and end up passing out, so the volume of my reading has gone down A LOT in the past month and a half. But it is for a worthwhile cause so I'm definitely not complaining! :)

The people I always worried about were the ones who would sit at a table IN the library staring into space or glaring at the people on the computers while waiting their turn. We'd suggest they might like to look at magazines or books and they'd just look at you like you were crazy.

Yes! that's so true, Amanda. My experience says give yourself permission to read, otherwise, you'll get burnt out on job hunting (like I am!). I like a reward system: x number applications done, then reading time.
For this next challenge, I'm trying to read more books related to my field, so that I feel like the reading is improving me/making me more marketable. Too bad there's no space for "books read" on my resume.

Ditto! I am studying currently though, but also looking for a job for next yr. When I pick a book to read, there comes guilty pangs!

Reading aloud while nursing? Now THAT'S what I call a good idea!!! Maybe I'll borrow your idea and start doing that myself. :)
Before my parents updated their lounge room furiture, they had this really nice squishy arm chair that was just perfect to sit in, curl up and read for hours on end... Thats not to say what they've got now isn't too bad.
Other then that nice squishy arm chair, my portable foldout chair (it kind of looks like those ones that you sit in when you are at a pool or something) is really nice to pull outside and read in.
But hands down I'd have to say my bed is a great place to read for two reasons.
1. Its comfortable
2. If you get cold you've just got to grab a doona and pull it up over you.

I read while nursing, too. I really should start reading everything aloud to her instead of just "her" books.
I listen to audiobooks on my commute every day, but I'm resigning my job on December 23rd so I won't have as much cause for that anymore. I'll still probably listen to them when we run errands, visit my parents or spend any other length of time in the car.

I like audio books when traveling, but I have a shortish commute so I don't bother with it. I have found the LibraVox online to listen to while working on projects at the office, but the list is sometimes hard to go through unless you know what you want.

I am also an audiobook devotee for commuting since it works if I walk or take the often too-crowded-to-sit bus, and they're also my sanity-saver for workouts at the gym. Seriously, I get so bored on the cardio equipment that I'd lose it if I didn't have the story to keep me involved.

I used to read and walk the neighborhood as a child (on the curb no less), still read and walk on the treadmill. I, too, read on planes and while watching tv. I love to read on my deck when the weather permits. In moving vehicles, I have started to be sick periodically as I age so that ones dicey for me. I CAN NOT read in bed. If it's a good book, I may not sleep, but mostly I just can't comfortably hold a book in a supine position.

When I was growing up I used to like to read on a certain step on our stairs. The stairs had a bend in them and I liked the corner step. Sitting there I could read but also not miss out on anything going on as I was in the middle of the house being able to see who was coming in and out!
Just wondered if anyone else had specific places that they like to read most!
