message 1: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) | 424 comments I read pretty much anywhere. I always have a book on me when I go out and will read during my lunch break at work, in doctor's waiting rooms or on public transport. But when I'm at home more often than not I will read in bed. If I want to read and it's the middle of the day I will go to bed to do so.

When I was growing up I used to like to read on a certain step on our stairs. The stairs had a bend in them and I liked the corner step. Sitting there I could read but also not miss out on anything going on as I was in the middle of the house being able to see who was coming in and out!

Just wondered if anyone else had specific places that they like to read most!

message 2: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 98 comments I like to sit on the right side of the couch (the left just doesn't work) or in bed w/ the pillows propped up behind me. When I was in college I had specific places that I would sit and do my studying during each different year.

message 3: by El (new)

El I also read just about anywhere in the public, but when I'm home I tend to sit on the left side of the couch (which apparently means Jennifer and I could sit on the same couch and read together without upsetting the other person, lol) in the living room or in bed. I also have a Room of My Own that unfortunately is still rather messy from when we moved into this house back in February. Once it's more comfortable I will enjoy reading on the couch or papasan chair in there, but sadly I'm usually too busy reading to consider really cleaning it up. :)

Elizabeth of Silver's Reviews (silversreviews) I usually like to sit on my love seat...right hand side....or in the small bed in my son's old room. :)

I need a blanket on me.

In the summer I sit on the back porch at my table or put a chair in the sun and read there. :)

message 5: by Tammy AZ (new)

Tammy AZ (tammyaz) | 1209 comments I sit on the right side of my couch also and get a ton of reading done every night in bed (also on the right side).

message 6: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments I have a big comfy chair in my dorm room that I like to read on. Sometimes I read in my bed, but I fall asleep and can't get really comfortable when laying down.

message 7: by Bluemoon (new)

Bluemoon (bluemoon286) | 1797 comments I read in the lazy boy in the living room (the dog is usually on the couch and he doesn't share well). I also read before I go to bed. I always have a book going in the car (audio of course) and will read at appointments and during lunch.

message 8: by Rachael (new)

Rachael (sweetbella) | 11 comments I always read in bed when I have a choice. I don't have a problem staying awake and its the most comfortable position for me. Otherwise, I always have a book in my purse and try to read whenever I have the time in the squishiest chair I can find.

message 9: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments You know, I'm trying to think of one particular spot that I read, but I read all over. I guess the MOST popular spots are in bed (propped up, on my stomach, on my side), the couch (either side), or in one of our IKEA chairs. I also read at the kitchen table sometimes, or on my stomach on the floor. Whatever's comfortable at the time, really.

And that's just regular books. I listen to audiobooks anywhere and everywhere as well, especially while cooking and cleaning and driving.

message 10: by Asho (new)

Asho | 181 comments I always have a book in my purse, and I do the bulk of my reading on public transportation since I have a two hour bus commute to work 3-4 days a week.
I can usually squeeze in an hour or two of reading each day at home. I'm a left-side-of-the-couch person, and I prop my book on a pillow on my lap. Sometimes I also read sitting at the dining table (which reminds me of my mother; that was her go-to reading place when I was a kid).

message 11: by Katie (new)

Katie | 4 comments I read lying down. Even if I make it a point to arrange my pillows to stay sitting up, within 5-10 minutes I'll be completely supine. Even in an arm chair, I'll get neck pain and then realize my back is mostly on the seat of the chair. I'm an unconscious slider. If I sit on my feet, I slide to the side. So, yeah, I do most of my reading in bed. I mean, clearly my reading mind is asking for it. :)

I'm also a book-in-the-purse kind of girl. Sometimes I have to start a new book if the one I'm reading won't fit in my bag. I'm a slow public reader, though. I'm just too focused on my surroundings to really get into my book, especially on the train.

Katie, I'm a slider too. I read best with my feet up off the floor. And I may start out sitting on the couch (left, right, or middle) but before I know it I'm on my back. It's a good thing I live alone and don't have to share it. I do have a wing-backed chair I like to sit in to read, but my feet have to be up on the hassack.
And reading in bed is a given, but it's on the left side--the right is full of books. I have stopped reading in the tub, though.

message 13: by Krista (last edited Nov 09, 2009 02:12PM) (new)

Krista (kacey14) I'll read most any place I can. (Like most of the book lovers that responded to this question.)
:-) My favorite spots are the recliner in my family room, preferably with my new cat on my lap; and in bed. Also, I usually have a book with short chapters or vingettes going that I just leave in the bathroom. (I know, I hate to admit that one! It just may sound gross, but it's much easier than lugging my other book in there.)

I always have an audio book going in the car, and I'll take the book I'm currently reading with me whenever I go somewhere that I think I may have a wait of a few minutes. I have been known to switch to a bigger purse in order to slip in a book to a wedding ceremony. :-} (Not that I'd read during the service, but sheesh -- there is sometimes quite a long wait before the ceremony gets starts.)

I'm easily distracted too, so unless it's a really compelling book it's often hard for me to stay focused on it when I'm reading in a noisy public place.

The guys at the security check point at the baseball stadium always laugh when they check my bag. I always have at least one book and my knitting (we go way early to get a good parking place).

Oh yes, now that it's getting colder again it's time to pull out the knitting too! :-) It's much easier for me to knit in a loud public setting than it is to read. Knitting doesn't take as much concentration. (Unless I'm trying to follow a really complicated pattern...)

message 16: by Jess Lessa (new)

Jess Lessa (thunderday) | 37 comments I'm definitely a fan of reading in bed. I can't go to sleep if I haven't read at least one chapter of a book. In the summer, I love a porch swing that is next to our horseback riding arena. I have a good view of anybody that might be riding and also the grazing horses in the pasture. With winter approaching, I already miss my summer spot!

message 17: by PDXReader (new)

PDXReader I get most of my reading done on the bus. A 60-minute commute in each direction certainly helps! I also listen to audio books at lunch and while exercising.

message 18: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ash88) | 19 comments At school I sometimes read in the library, but usually I'll read/study in our campus Student Union... cuz that's where all the food's at, of course :P

at home I read outside or on my "reading couch," which is our smaller couch, so I can lay on it kinda sideways with my head on one armrest (with a pillow) and my legs hanging off the other armrest. sounds weird, but it is soooo comfy....

And, of course, I always carry a book with me. Really, what else is a purse for??

message 19: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie My favorite place to read is in bed, followed closely by on the couch wrapped in blankets.

Like many, I keep a book with me wherever I go. You never know when you might be able to sneak in some reading! I also always have a couple of books on disc uploaded to my iPod for walking the dog, doing chores around the house, etc.

message 20: by Bunny (new)

Bunny (neonbunny) | 72 comments i like to curl up on one side of the couch. i must have a blanket and something to drink. sometimes one of my rabbits will lay on the couch next to me, and that is especially nice! i also read in bed, which is dangerous because it's just so comfy to be curled up in bed, reading a good book, that i will often read all through the night.

i've also recently started keeping an audiobook on my iphone for when i'm in the car, and i always have a book in my purse. i've been like this all my life- when i was a little kid, i don't think anyone would have recognized me without my nose in a book! my mom once remarked that she was concerned i might be reading too much. too much! i don't think that's possible. ;)

message 21: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) I like to read in my bedroom on my bed. But we're going to be moving soon and the new house has this amazing balcony that might be a new fave place. And there's also the neighborhood clubhouse across the street that's basically quiet and peaceful since there's only a few people in the neighborhood. I can't wait to discover a new reading spot!!!

message 22: by Amy (last edited Nov 18, 2009 06:55PM) (new)

Amy I prefer to read curled up in my comfy bed! But, I will occasionally read on the sofa but its more difficult to concentrate since my twin 4 year olds are often running around and talking a lot LOL

message 23: by Athira (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) I read just about anywhere, but best prefer to curl up on my bed and read. I hate reading when there are people around me, I get distracted easily.

message 24: by Louvaine (new)

Louvaine | 98 comments I like to read anytime, anywhere--even walking and riding. I haven't figured out a way to read while I sleep yet, but if I could I would!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments I can read and walk at the same time. I like to read on the floor, on a bench, at my computer, in bed. I read in an airplane, bus, taxi and car. I can read and watch tv at the same time. (I read during commercials)

Wow, okay, I can do almost all of those except while watching tv. I have tried before, but I get distracted by commercials.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I like to read everywhere. I usually read more than one book at a time, and have a "computer area" book, a "car" book, a "bed" book and a "TV" book going. I am schizophrenic in this regard, and that is probably why I did not do very well on my first challenge, lol!

message 29: by Beth F (last edited Nov 29, 2009 05:41PM) (new)

Beth F | 669 comments I read everywhere: in bed, the couch, a comfy chair, riding in the car, waiting for the bus, sitting on the bus, waiting at the doctor's office, etc.

Historically, I've gotten the BULK of my reading done while commuting, which is probably why I haven't been getting as much done lately. During the last month of my pregnancy my husband was driving me to and from work because the bus was more than I could handle at that enormously pregnant stage (so no reading). And now that my baby is here and I'm on maternity leave, if I'm not busy attending to her I'm too tired to read more than a few pages at a time before I go cross-eyed and end up passing out, so the volume of my reading has gone down A LOT in the past month and a half. But it is for a worthwhile cause so I'm definitely not complaining! :)

message 30: by Dee (new)

Dee (nushmutty) | 144 comments I used to read in bed but since the baby was born I can't do that anymore; I'm too tired! Now I read aloud to her while nursing, and that's when the majority of my reading gets done! I find it's harder to find time to read as she gets older and I have to do tummy-time, baby group, plus my regular household chores, but I'll get creative soon. Necessity is the mother of invention, right?

message 31: by Barbara VA (new)

Barbara VA (barbarava) I am an anywhere reader, the book follows me around the house. If it is too big, I will leave it next to my squishy chair in the sunroom with the ottoman (also for the right side of the couch, feet tucked up under me, wrapped in a quilt) and also have a smaller book that will also go in the purse with me and get pulled out where ever I need it, lines at the supermarket, music lessons, auto shop - don't you wonder about people who just sit and stare while getting the oil changed?

The people I always worried about were the ones who would sit at a table IN the library staring into space or glaring at the people on the computers while waiting their turn. We'd suggest they might like to look at magazines or books and they'd just look at you like you were crazy.

Yes! that's so true, Amanda. My experience says give yourself permission to read, otherwise, you'll get burnt out on job hunting (like I am!). I like a reward system: x number applications done, then reading time.

For this next challenge, I'm trying to read more books related to my field, so that I feel like the reading is improving me/making me more marketable. Too bad there's no space for "books read" on my resume.

Reading aloud while nursing? Now THAT'S what I call a good idea!!! Maybe I'll borrow your idea and start doing that myself. :)

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Before my parents updated their lounge room furiture, they had this really nice squishy arm chair that was just perfect to sit in, curl up and read for hours on end... Thats not to say what they've got now isn't too bad.

Other then that nice squishy arm chair, my portable foldout chair (it kind of looks like those ones that you sit in when you are at a pool or something) is really nice to pull outside and read in.

But hands down I'd have to say my bed is a great place to read for two reasons.
1. Its comfortable
2. If you get cold you've just got to grab a doona and pull it up over you.

I read while nursing, too. I really should start reading everything aloud to her instead of just "her" books.

I listen to audiobooks on my commute every day, but I'm resigning my job on December 23rd so I won't have as much cause for that anymore. I'll still probably listen to them when we run errands, visit my parents or spend any other length of time in the car.

message 40: by Carma (new)

Carma | 28 comments The couch we have is a recliner on both ends, so Hubby and I can both stretch out to read. Dog in the middle cushion and a cat on either of our laps. Perfect. Reading in bed is good, but I only have paperbacks so I don't get hurt if I fall asleep in the middle of a chapter.
I like audio books when traveling, but I have a shortish commute so I don't bother with it. I have found the LibraVox online to listen to while working on projects at the office, but the list is sometimes hard to go through unless you know what you want.

message 41: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments I have three favorite spots - the loveseat in the living room, the recliner downstairs, and bed. In all three locales, a warm blanket is a must-have; a warm dog to tuck my toes under is a bonus if he's feeling snuggly.

I am also an audiobook devotee for commuting since it works if I walk or take the often too-crowded-to-sit bus, and they're also my sanity-saver for workouts at the gym. Seriously, I get so bored on the cardio equipment that I'd lose it if I didn't have the story to keep me involved.

message 42: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) Wherever I can! But bed with tons of pillows is most comfy

message 43: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jess0702) | 127 comments We have an L-shaped couch and I love sitting in the corner of it to read (with my fleece blanket, of course!). I do a lot of reading in bed too. But, wherever I am (which is often in the subway to and from work) works too!

message 44: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1 comments I love reading in bed; not just before I go to sleep although that happens too, but when I wake up in the morning. I want to have coffee and my book and just stay there with lots of pillows until around 1 or 2 in the afternoon. If I get up, I'll get sidetracked into the business of the day. Staying in bed protects my reading time.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments I love reading in bed. Getting under the covers and just letting yourself sink into the book. I also enjoy reading in a hot bath. Then when it is warm outside I usually lay ontop of my bed and read. My favorite part about reading other than the book itself is when my dog comes up and lays on me and then it's just me her and the book. I don't care who else is around, that's all I notice and care about!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments I like reading in bed but i end up falling asleep. I ate when that happens. :)

I used to read and walk the neighborhood as a child (on the curb no less), still read and walk on the treadmill. I, too, read on planes and while watching tv. I love to read on my deck when the weather permits. In moving vehicles, I have started to be sick periodically as I age so that ones dicey for me. I CAN NOT read in bed. If it's a good book, I may not sleep, but mostly I just can't comfortably hold a book in a supine position.

message 48: by Christina (new)

Christina (noordinarybookwhore) | 3 comments I don't really have a certain spot but I am definately not coordinated enough to walk and read at the same time, I'd get myself hurt.

message 49: by Callista (new)

Callista | 1 comments Like everyone else, I love reading in bed when I am at home. I love curling up in bed with a good book and just reading for hours, with a blanket around me and a soft pillow at my back. If I'm not at home, then I can read pretty much anywhere. I just love relaxing into a good book.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 31 comments My favorite places to read are the right side of the couch or my bed, propped up against a bunch of pillows. Eventually, I do the slide thing and end up lying down but I can't stay in that position for long because it's a strain to hold the book up (if I'm on my back) or to lay sideways.
