❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) | 310 comments Please join me in reading/discussing Memory Man Memory Man (Amos Decker, #1) by David Baldacci

Amos Decker's life changed forever--twice.
The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good, and left him with an improbable side effect--he can never forget anything.

The second time was at home nearly two decades later. Now a police detective, Decker returned from a stakeout one evening and entered a nightmare--his wife, young daughter, and brother-in-law had been murdered.

His family destroyed, their killer's identity as mysterious as the motive behind the crime, and unable to forget a single detail from that horrible night, Decker finds his world collapsing around him. He leaves the police force, loses his home, and winds up on the street, taking piecemeal jobs as a private investigator when he can.

But over a year later, a man turns himself in to the police and confesses to the murders. At the same time a horrific event nearly brings Burlington to its knees, and Decker is called back in to help with this investigation. Decker also seizes his chance to learn what really happened to his family that night. To uncover the stunning truth, he must use his remarkable gifts and confront the burdens that go along with them. He must endure the memories he would much rather forget. And he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Memory Man will stay with you long after the turn of the final page.

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) | 310 comments I will be reading this as an audiobook because Hachette Audio does amazing work with David Baldacci's books. And, narrators Ron McLarty & Orlagh Cassidy are my all time favorite narrators.

shanghao (sanshow) | 123 comments seems interesting! this will be my first Baldacci book even though I've heard about him several times before.

I hope you enjoy. I'm a big fan of Baldacci and this has high reviews so it should be pretty amazing.

Cobwebs-in-Space-Ice (readingreindeerproximacentauri) | 10 comments I read this as an ARC. It was "un-put-down-able" to coin a phrase. I adored it.

Awesome.... I'm happy to hear. What rating did you give it?

message 8: by Erna (new)

Erna | 19 comments I am nearly finished this book and I agree with Mallory, and un-put-down-able read. I love the character Amos Decker and I hope Baldacci will write a sequel with this character.

message 9: by Alice (new)

Alice R. I just finished this book, in a day and a-half. Best book of its kinds I've read in a long time and I, too, hope this is the beginning of an Amos Decker series.

The challenges, advantages & disadvantages of Decker's brain injury make this character unique among the crowded field of fictional detectives. I haven't enjoyed reading a book this much in awhile; not since THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, as a matter of fact. Great choices!

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) | 310 comments I have just started the audiobook and I am looking forward to being carried away into the life of Amos Decker.

Ami Cook | 129 comments I'm on a wait list over a 100 people long at the library it must be a terrific book! I'll try to pick up a copy this week as I don't think I'm waiting that long on the library :) I've not read any of his books so I'm anxious to get started!

Ami Cook | 129 comments Crystal - a couple months ago I discovered audible books and I love them. I travel a lot for work and it makes the miles so much easier.

Yes, audiobooks are amazing.... and the quality is improving more and more. I'm seeing/hearing more books that have dual narrators, sound effects and livelier narrators that makes the experience so much more enjoyable. Crime and Thrillers are my favorite audiobook genres.. at times they can be scarier than a movie.

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) | 310 comments I wrapped this up yesterday and I really enjoyed. I give the book 4.5 stars and 5 stars for the narration. I enjoyed very much.

Skye | 2105 comments Crystal, I have one of his novels, and I hate to admit I have never read any by Balducci.

message 17: by Ami (new)

Ami Cook | 129 comments I've always had a far greater imagination when it comes to books or audible, it just seems so much worse in your own head

True! I once screamed at a stranger at the gym once.... I was listening to Dr. Sleep Dr. Sleep (The Shining, #2) by Stephen King It was a really scary part when the the killer whispered just as I caught a movement out of the corner of my eye and I screamed. LOL.... then she screamed and we had a rolling laugh when I told her I was listening to a scary audiobook and to please forgive me.

message 20: by Skye (new)

Skye | 2105 comments Crystal, he is very popular, and I have been searching for the one I have, or at least think I have.

message 21: by Henry (new)

Henry Ortiz Looks like another great Baldacci series. I enjoyed this book. Amos is very different from his other lead characters.

message 22: by ❆ Crystal ❆ (new)

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) | 310 comments Amos is different for sure, and he's awesome.

message 23: by Ami (new)

Ami Cook | 129 comments Crystal I laughed out loud at you screaming in the gym! I can assure you that would be something I would do! I gave up on the library wait as you all make the book sound like a must read :) I got it for my Kindle and will be starting today after grocery shopping. How boring but if I plan to read for 2 straight days I suppose I ought to feed my family loll!

message 24: by ❆ Crystal ❆ (last edited May 24, 2015 07:02AM) (new)

❆ Crystal ❆ (crystal_wright) | 310 comments Ami, I hope you enjoy it! Sorry the wait is so long for the library, but it's a new release so I suppose that's to be expected. LOL... Yes, best to hit the grocery story and be stocked up on easy to prepare foods and that way if you're really engrossed then they can feed themselves. I go on cooking binges where I plop in an audiobook and cook all day making 3 to 4 days worth of food. The fridge is stuffed to capacity and I only have to heat and serve while I read for the next few days.

Sharon (sweetsharon) I have to admit I was scared this would turn into a political books since this is what I have found with this author. I was greatly surprised and finished it in a day and a half, I fell asleep at 3 am to me this is a good sign of a gripping book.

I loved the audiobook. The narrators are fantastic and the sound effects make it perfect.

message 42: by Ami (new)

Ami Cook | 129 comments Crystal are any of his other books similar to True Blue? I didn't see it was a series which is too bad, the sisters would make great continuing characters.

message 43: by Irina (new)

Irina | 2 comments Very intriguing book, definitely wasn't expecting to turn out as it did. Haven't read any other book by David Baldacci, but now I'll look for some more. I had no clue until 3/4 of the book. The most intriguing book I've read.

message 44: by Janeandjerry (new)

Janeandjerry (janeandjerryculwell) | 114 comments Still waiting for this one at the library so hopefully it will be in soon

message 45: by Chris (new)

Chris Phipps | 6 comments I chose to read both books. Finished Girl on a Train, and am just getting into Memory Man (I saved it for dessert, being a long-time Baldacci fan. Memory Man is riveting from the beginning, and I know I'm going to be doing some late-night reading with this one.

message 46: by shanghao (last edited Jun 09, 2015 05:50AM) (new)

shanghao (sanshow) | 123 comments Just finished the book, and I prefer this one to the other club read, The Girl on The Train. Was quite disappointed that this isn't (view spoiler), and a few characters didn't quite gel it for me. (view spoiler)

It's a page turner and I liked Amos Decker as the main protagonist here. He reminds me of Roberth Galbraith's Cormoran Strike, only he's more likeable.

After this I'd want to check out other books by David Baldacci.

message 47: by Penny (new)

Penny | 2 comments Still 11 people ahead of me for this one at the library. I am looking forward to the read. I love David Baldacci.

message 48: by Laura (new)

Laura (laura300) | 36 comments Didn't enjoy this very much far too much gratuitous violence for me and I'm not normally squeamish

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 831 comments Enjoyed Memory Man. I'm glad it''s the beginning of a series. Five stars.

message 50: by Ami (new)

Ami Cook | 129 comments I loved it and went to library to find more and also picked up his True Blue. Everything else is too political for me.
