Will Green | 3 comments Hi, could someone please update the missing cover on the 1984 edition of this book to be the same as the 1981 version? Thanks.

Martin | 38868 comments We need a correct source for that specific edition.
If the ISBN is also the same the two can probably be merged.

Will Green | 3 comments yes actually looks like they can be merged as the 1981 is a date error.

"Sydney : Fontana and the Australian Conservation Foundation, 1981 [i.e. 1984]"
Source National Library of Australia

Martin | 38868 comments We would need a source which confirms the printings have the same cover, publishers sometimes reissue a book with same ISBN but different artwork.

Will Green | 3 comments So I believe that National Library of Australia source is saying there was no 1981 printing, and that it was in error. The "1981 [i.e. 1984]" implies:

- The date 1981 is what was originally printed on the item’s publication statement (the information the publisher put on the book itself).

- The bracketed phrase “[i.e. 1984]” indicates that 1984 is the correct or actual publication year as established by the cataloguer based on evidence (e.g., later information inside the book, reviews, external records), and that the printed date 1981 is either incorrect or misleading.

- This bracketed date is part of standard bibliographic practice: when the printed publication date is not accurate or is contradicted by better information, cataloguers supply the correct year in brackets after “i.e.” (meaning “that is”) to clarify.

So I believe it would be fine to remove the 1981 edition and leave only the 1984 edition as the only true edition.
Thanks,

Martin | 38868 comments I don't know. Without specialist knowledge I would have assumed the original publication date to be 1981 with the edition held by library being a later reissue.
You can request corrections/merge at 'book and author page issues', somebody there with knowledge of such matters can take a look.
