Hi, yes it is a larger goal. I had actually written down 100, then my sister told me about this group. I'm only on 14 (with 2 in the hopper), but excited by the challenge. Using a combination of hard backs, audio, loans and library. I have a long daily commute so it's a great way to pass that time and keep it valuable.
Thanks for starting this!

message 302: by Angie (new)

Angie (angelitabonita) Thanks for letting me know everyone. If it weren't for audiobooks I wouldn't get to enjoy half the books I do. I try to spend a few hours at night reading before bedtime, but sometimes after a long day of work them cooking dinner, I am too tired to do anything. My audio books get me thru the traffic to and from work. I absolutely love it. In fact, I spent the day listening to an Agatha Christie story while I cleaned my house. It was great.

message 303: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I now keep an audio book going in my car all the time. My commute to and from work isn't very long, but that and running errands adds up. I can get through a book in a week, so that's an extra 4 books a month!

message 304: by Dawn (new)

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) Well I have atleast an hour commute a day so now I am going to try that. I bet it will help me reach more of my goal. I think I even own a few I never tried.

message 305: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments Dawn, I have started listening to audiobooks on my way back and forth from work. I only have a 35-45 minute commute, but it seems to relax me. I had to try it a few times before I got used to it. When I first tried it I hated it, but now I listen every day during my commute.

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) Yeah Im just worried my mom and brother wont like it we commute together. Thanks

In my family, the driver has control of the radio ;) lol But if you need book suggestions that can appeal to different groups of people, we could probably help with that!

message 308: by Dawn (new)

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) HEY I LIKE THAT MOTTO. I AM THE ONLY DRIVER. OK WHEN I AM THRU THE ONES I ALREADY OWN AND DECIDE IF I CAN HANDLE IT I WILL REACH OUT TO YALL.

message 309: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I tried audio books a few times. Since I'm not in the car for periods of time except when I go back and forth to the shore. But I did essays or something or short stories once and it went better. A regular book and it was Sandra brown I kept having to start over because it was so much time in between that I was always lost in the story. I'm thinking about giving it another try maybe when I start walking again (when the weather gets better) or if I want to listen to one while I needlepoint which I haven't tried yet. maybe I'll see what the library has the next time.

Donnajo, I found that the Janet Evanovich numbers series was easy for me to listen to and very funny. When I finish the series, I am going to try another author.

That's funny, Jackie, for some reason I had the same problem when I first tried an audio book, I didn't like it at all! But now I think they are great. I find them relaxing too.

message 312: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Well Janet's books wouldn't be good for me since she's the only author I buy in hc (except for one of her between books) and pass them to my sister and I keep them afterwards. So audio wouldn't be good for that. And even when I was listening to them for the part of the trips to the shore I never liked doing it for the whole trip I like music so I'll listen for awhile then switch to music. And I did do a library audio for walking a few times still for some reason I was having more problems finding my spot than not.

That's a shame. Well, maybe you need to find a "quick" book and try that one.

message 314: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Maybe I'll need to go to B&N and see what I can find. Still have the gift certificate not that I would use it on audio but still want to use it on something.

For short books, I really recommend the BBC version of Sherlock Holmes w/ Clive Merrison. They're really more like radio dramas, but they are so true to the originals, I count them as books. Each episode is only about 45-60 minutes long. I also started listening to Saki's short stories - very funny/fun dry wit. Oh, and there are short story collections of Wodehouse's tales of Jeeves out there that are so funny! My husband and I also like some of the HP Lovecraft short stories audio we've found - but you have to like "weird" fiction ;)

message 316: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Rachel thanks I wrote them down will see what I can find when I go check.

message 317: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Maybe what I should do is check what the library has first. I'm so upset I found out last night that Elizabeth gilbert was at the BJ's by me signing her books during the day. My sister didn't read her newspaper from the other day until last night and it was in there. It would have been something good to go too. Oh well.

message 318: by Haley (new)

Haley Thank you for inviting me to this group Jeana!!
:)
I have a bet with a friend that I could read 80 books in one year. So this will really help me with keeping track!!
Im really excited to get this going.

message 319: by Jeana (new)

Jeana (tessamay07) Ah you are most welcome Haley!

I myself am looking forward to this journey of 144 different worlds to explore!

Haley Thank you!! :)

I love listening to Agatha Christie on audio! The great thing about these is that they usually are about only 5 discs longs as compared to most of them I listen to with run anywhere from 8 to 13 discs. I especially like the runs read by David Suchet or Hugh Frasier.

If you're not driving and the radio has to be on, an mp3 player or IPOD with headphones might work.

Donnajo,

Try them when you're doing household chores. This works better with an mp3 player.

GREAT idea!! I need to get a hold of some audio Agatha Christie.

message 327: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo The one I did in the past was a David Sedaris. Also I think I did some of those audio on Not chicken soup for the soup but the other one that is the same type of things. I think it's something like Chocolate for the soul. More love story stuff.

message 328: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I did a David Sedaris audio book on a trip once with friends and we loved it. He is SO funny!

message 329: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I have two of his books too. I don't know if I would get into them as easier as a audio. I'm really not into short stories unless they are romance books.

message 330: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 87 comments Well it worked. Ray has been watching me read so much these past 2 months, that he has picked up a book on his own. He is reading "The Wimpy Kid" series. Maybe in a few years I can stop paying for cable. LOL

message 331: by MJ (new)

MJ | 5 comments I'm wondering if it's okay to join the challenge anytime of the year or if you have to join Januari 1?

message 332: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I would think you could join anytime. The only bad thing about joining late is then having to go back and re-create what you have read. Good to see you here!!

Afsana (afsanaz) Darcy wrote: "I would think you could join anytime. The only bad thing about joining late is then having to go back and re-create what you have read. Good to see you here!!"

yes recreate or try to read 144 books in shorter time

message 335: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 77 comments Hi Everyone,

I just found this group. Since I read a lot, this seems a great group. Since I am starting late in the game here, do I date back the books I have read so far if I remember for this year? I was also wondering if you guys had a book list already set to read, or just whatever you found interesting?

Thanks,

Hina

message 336: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I don't see why you can't post what you have already read.

I'm just reading whatever catches my eye at that particular time.

message 337: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Hina--the challenge is 144 for 2010. So, if you've read them in 2010, they count.

Most of us are just reading whatever we enjoy/find interesting.

message 340: by Judithe (new)

Judithe | 36 comments A friend is doing this challenge, and I didn't realize there was a group for it! I liked "her" idea so much, I started tracking my books (just new reads at first, now all) and have finally found the group! A goal of 144 sounds fun!

message 343: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I have been counting each book in a series as one.

message 344: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 247 comments I will count the book if it is over 150 pages.

message 345: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) ach one in a series as one. Imagine if you were reading grafton 20 in the series so far how can you not count it as 20 books

message 346: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I agree, I've been counting each one.

message 347: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Or if you're reading Andre Norton's Witch World series--there are over 30 books in that series. NOT something you'd want to count as "one" book.

message 348: by Dawn (new)

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) IF ITS A BOOK IN A SERIES I COUNT IT AS ONE EACH NO MATTER WHAT. I HAPPEN TO HAVE GRAFTONS ABC AND ITS ALL IN ONE BOOK SO I AM COUNTING IT AS 3.

message 349: by LynnB (new)

LynnB A book is a book, therefore 1 book = 1 book (at least as far as I'm concerned!)

message 350: by Mackenzie (new)

Mackenzie RM (mackenzierm) | 87 comments I agree with LynnB. If it's published as it's own book then it's most definitely a book. :)
