Catherine I'm like that too Leana, I tend to go in cycles. Luckily right now I'm really motivated to read, and I hope that continues. I usually read a lot in the summertime because I tend to watch a lot of TV in the winter and spring months, and not as much over the summer.

Thanks a bunch, I could read more if I wasn't doing my knitting or dealing with kid stuff. I will have to crack down. lol.

message 255: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 168 comments I hit 144 for 2009 yesterday (Dec. 8), but I had surgery last December and was still doing a lot of lying around back in January. I knocked out quite a few books then.

I see children's books are not allowed, but I'm guessing Young Adults are okay. I just started the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series in anticipation of the movie that comes out early next year.

message 256: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I read a lot of "cozy" series that read very quickly, like M.C. Beaton and Kate Kingsbury. I've been saving all of the Pennyfoot Hotel books for a special occasion. Now that occasion is January 2010!!

I didn't know the Percy Jackson movie was coming out early next year! That makes me super excited! I love the series!

I'm with you Lisa. It's very seldom that I don't read the end of the book. I try very hard not to, but ... most of the time, I have to read the rest of the book to see why it ended the way it did.

message 259: by Rayni (new)

Rayni | 135 comments Someone else wrote about reading with a dictionary by their side. I <3 dictionaries. I got in trouble for reading a dictionary in class when I was in high school. For my 18th birthday my mom gave me a dictionary; 40 years later the poor dictionary is falling apart, LOL

message 260: by Drew (new)

Drew | 16 comments Hi Crystal! I'm curious to see if I can accomplish this task. It will be interesting to see how far I can go!

message 261: by Leaundra (new)

Leaundra (leaundraross) | 1 comments Oye! Crystal thanks for inviting me. This sounds really cool. I have never counted myself, but I do read a lot so it will be interesting to see how many I can read.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic Drew invited me and yes, I am an avid reader =D. I can read 9-15 books a month. I will be happy to get to know everyone.

message 263: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I was wondering once the challenge starts in January are we going to have a neww thread to discuss how our challenges are going, how we feel and what difficulties w are finding and encourage each other?

message 268: by [deleted user] (new)

I just started doing the Seasonal challenges over at The Next Best Book Club and they have got me reading a bit more. I figure this will help me get a list of books that I want to read or want to re-read and I can use the both of them together!

message 269: by Toni (new)

Toni | 50 comments Sounds fun! So glad I found this group!

message 270: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) cool I will set up a thread in the next week or so if ok with crystal?

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 158 comments Howdy all! I see a few familiar faces from other groups I've joined since I've started here at GR in August.

As long as things stick to the current rate of 18-20 books per month, I should be able to kick this challenge in the pants. I usually set goals by page count per year (30K for 2010) but I'll go by book count here as well. But as the Nationwide commercials used to say, "Life comes at you fast". in other words we'll see how it goes.

I'll post my thread in the appropriate category.

Thanks for having this around.

message 272: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) Hey Crystal,

Kelly R. invited me to join, so I thought I'd give a try. Looking forward to it.

message 273: by Monica (new)

Monica (monbon211) | 4 comments I'm looking forward to the challenge. I love reading but I don't think I read often enough. So my first goal for 2010 is to read 50 books. If I get there then I'll keep on truckin' in hopes to possibly reach 144 books. That seems like a huge challenge for mel. But I'm in the same boat as others: it will never be a failure, it's the attempt that counts. And the journey (not the destination). Cliche, but hey, it works.

I'm excited! I already have a list of books to get started on in the new year :)

message 274: by Monica (new)

Monica (monbon211) | 4 comments *for me, not mel. who's mel?

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) LOL Monica

message 276: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Hi Crystal thanks for the invite. I'm really excited to give this challenge a try. Since being new here or this type of challenge I'm looking forward to seeing what other people post if it's just title, author, rating of the book and maybe alittle bit about the book or just the basic info.

message 277: by Carrie (Care) (new)

Carrie (Care) (care76) Hi! *waves* I have a few friends that joined this group and I was like "why 144 boks?". Lol, now I know and I thought I'd give it a shot. I was actually planning on reading 100 books in 2010, so this will be a challenge for me.

message 278: by LooLoo (new)

LooLoo I see a few of my friends have joined and are doing this challenge so I thought I would too. Sounds like fun!

message 279: by Kami (new)

Kami (katmiv) I'm excited about actually setting a goal for myself. I think in 2009 I read around 90 books (give or take), so 144 is probably going to be a bit of a challenge for me, but I am anxious to see if I can do it.

message 280: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Hello Everyone! I never actually set a challenge for myself with reading but I'm up for it....I can't even recall how many books I've read in 2009 but I bet it was pretty much up there.

message 281: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Welcome to all the new folks :) 144 is definitely going to be a push for a lot of us, myself included. But I'm glad we're all so excited about trying, and I think it'll be very rewarding no matter if we manage to make the full 144 or not. It'll be fun to try! :)

message 282: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (classmum) | 134 comments I can't wait to start reading. I not only read books in print but also listen to on Compact Disc while I am in the car or sewing. I hope these count!

Yep, audio books count according to the rules!

Colleen (colleenct1) | 87 comments I am so excited I will be finishing "The Stand" tonight. It will be my first book for 2010. Last night I would not let myself watch TV till I read 100 pages. I am determined to reach this goal.

the stand is great-you enjoying it?

message 286: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (colleenct1) | 87 comments Yes I am, this is like my 4th time reading it and this book just gets better and better each time I read it.

message 287: by Leana (new)

Leana (craftychick) | 38 comments I should finish Beautiful Creatures - love it by the way! - tonight. So I am going to start on the first book in the Wonderous Strange series by Lesley Livingston. Not too sure what it's about other than faeries. But it looks really good and the 2nd one came out not too long ago so I am sure I will read that next.

message 288: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I didn't realize anyone was shocked and/or amazed at my book total. To answer the many questions...

I'm not retired but I am single with no family living close by. My friends all live out of state so not much of a social life. Most days I get to read at work but usually only about 100 pages or so. I don't watch TV though I will watch a TV show on DVD once in a while...so lots of free time. I don't really have any vices so books are it.

Needless to say, I read about a book a day and usually 3 over the weekend hence the 365 a year. This is the first year that I've really kept track and it was amazing.

I buy a lot of my older books from used bookstores and/or library sales. I do buy all the newer releases (which I must have) from borders (or B&N) and yes all the cashier's know me.

message 290: by Angie (new)

Angie (angelitabonita) Do audio books count for this challenge? I do a lot of driving for work and listening to books keep me sane, and sometimes in my busy life it's the only way I get to keep "reading"

message 291: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I have been counting them.

Under the rules list, it says "audio books allowed".

I don't know if I would have been able to participate if they hadn't! Audiobooks allow me to be reading nearly every second of the day - driving, washing dishes, doing makeup... I'd never get to 144 with traditional reading methods! lol

message 296: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) Rachel,

I'm with you. I often can get through an audio book faster than a regular book because household chores can be done while listening. Gosh, I love my MP3 Player!!
And even if you don't have one of those, a cd player will work too, as long as you're doing stuff in the same room or in the car. I have an older car, and so it's a cassette deck, but with a special adapter, i can use the MP3 player in the car. Works great for music too. What did I do before all these new gadgets?

message 297: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) Dawn wrote: "THERE IS A RULES LIST????"

Dawn,

There are some rules, like no small children's books. However, most of it is really up to you. The only book I haven't counted this year was an short audio book that was originally part of a collection of 4 short stories in book form. If I had actual read or listened to all of the stories in the book, then I would have counted it.

There are several topics where people are discussing how they will count their books.

message 298: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I've been counting audio books. All the ones I've listened to so far have been 4 hours plus. Most more than that. So I figure that's as long as I would spend reading a book.

LynnB Dawn wrote: "THERE IS A RULES LIST????"

Dawn, here are the rules (such as they may be--there really isn't much you can't do in the challenge): "Challenge Starts January 1, 2010. Audio books are included. No childrens books. " --That's copy/pasted right from the rules.

message 300: by Dawn (new)

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) Thanks everyone for sharing the laws with me. LOL Still havent finished a single book in 2010 but i started about 5 so maybe in Feb. I can finish atlest one or 2. I think I need to get into Audiobooks.
