Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) omg where do you all find the time??? I am lucky if I get an hour of reading in a day. Maybe I should not have joined this challenge. I think I am only averaging 3 books a month.

Darcy (sunnytat462) Dawn ~

Don't count yourself out before you start. Some people don't have as much free time as others. Myself, I am not married and don't have kids. It means my free time is mine and I can do what I want with it. I know that I read more than my friends, but who cares as long as we can talk books I am happy.

message 103: by Dawn (new)

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) Thanks Darcy. I am the same. I am not married nor do I have kids , but I have a hectic family and a new boyfriend and fulltime job.

I'm assuming you must be retired or something. The only person I know who was able to read that type of number of books was a retired lady who had no responsibilities to anyone.

My goodness, I don't know which impresses me more, the number of books read, or the idea that you bought them! Does the bookstore send you thank you notes?

message 106: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) I have to say I was thinking the same thing. I always joke that I can't afford my reading habit and book stores are like crack to me. My wallet hurts just thinking about that many books. LOL

message 107: by Dawn (new)

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) WELL I HAVE HALTED MY PURCHASES TILL I COMPLETE WHATS ALREADY HOME. I HAVE THE 144 ON MY SHELVES TO READ WHICH IS WHY I AM TRYING THIS CHALLENGE. MY THOUGHT IS THAT ALL MY NEW RELEASES WILL BE DIRT CHEAP WHEN I AM READY FOR THEM. ALSO DO ANY OF YOU GUYS USE THE SWAPPING SITES THEY ARE GREAT.
TRY BOOKINS.COM , BOOKMOOCH.COM

message 108: by Christie (new)

Christie (cibarra) Thanks for the invite!

2010 will be my first year of really keeping track and setting a goal to reach a certain number of books. If I don't reach it at least I'll have fun trying.

message 109: by Dawn (new)

wow!!

how big are the books?

message 113: by Linda (new)

Linda (mslinda8393) | 51 comments Hey Crystal. I think I had "pledged" 100 books, but I'm excited with the extra challenge. I think I might have a better chance of completing the challenge if it is several books a week. I can't wait to get started! I liked your idea of the book postings/discussions. This is gonna be fun!

Thanks for the invite! I've never kept a yearly count. My regular reading is about 2 books a week; sometimes more. My overall goal is to enjoy reading but it's going to be interesting and fun keeping track with y'all.

message 115: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Dawn I just joined Paperbackswap. Can you tell me what you don't like about it cause I haven't used it yet.

message 116: by Martha (new)

Martha | 27 comments Great plan, Cryrstal!
I've no idea how many books I read a year. Some authors are quick and easy reads (Stuart Woods), others not so much. In theroy, 2010 should be a good year for me to do this, because my son starts Grade 1, so he'll be in school full time.

message 117: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyauer) I was starting to think I was crazy for joining this challenge, but I really want to push myself to read more annnnnd I'm so excited I just talked DH into buying me a Kindle for Christmas that will motivate me!

NOTHING WRONG WITH IT PERSAY. I JUST GET MORE USE OUT OF THE OTHER 2 I FIND MY BOOKS DONT MOVE FAST ON SWAP LIKE THEY DO ON THE OTHERS.

STUART WOODS IS MY FAVORITE. I AM ABOUT 5 BEHIND BUT I OWN THEM AND I AM GOING TO START THEM AS MY FIRST FEW TO GIVE ME A JUMP START IN 2010

message 120: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (jordieheartsbooks) | 37 comments I've never challenged myself to read any number of books in a given year nor have I ever really kept track of how many I've read in a year. I'm excited to see how many I can get through and I may end up finally reading all those books on my special shelving unit in my bedroom of to-read books.

message 121: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) Michelle wrote: "Are we allowed to reread books for this challenge? I have a few books that I read every year because I love them so much, can I count this towards my 144?

Crystal said yes in an earlier post

message 122: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Lisa--I had the opposite response from Dawn--my books move much faster on PBS than on the other sites. In fact, 1 of them I STILL haven't had a single book requested, and I joined it like 2 years ago. So now I pretty much stick to PBS myself.

message 123: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) I didn't used to keep track of my books, but I started back in 2003. I have a spreadsheet for each year with book title, author, # of pages, grade & comments. I've actually enjoyed keeping it. If something sounds familiar I can go back and check previous years and see if I've already read it.

message 124: by Dawn (new)

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) melodie i have a spread sheet too.

message 125: by Angela (new)

Angela This will be my third year keeping track of what I read. I think I read around 140 the first year and I am currently at 184 this year. I was in school the first year, so that took up a lot of time. The Seasonal Challenges by Cynthia have helped me read more and more because I strive to finish the challenge.

message 127: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Daniel Thanks for the invite Crystal! I love the amount you picked! A gross! I think I will probably set my own goal at 200 for next year. I did it this year and didn't even know it!

Children's books aren't allowed but what about YA? Is it a page limit on that restriction or what?

message 128: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep, YA are allowed, Jennifer. No page limit or anything. Audio books are allowed as well. Thanks for joining. Good luck with your goals next year. :)

message 129: by Cordel (new)

Cordel Durrant | 6 comments Thanks for the invitation, Cryystal. I don't think 144 is a real challenge, but keeping track of those 144 is. I am hoping, for the first time in my life, I will actually know how many books I read in one year.

message 130: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrie) I just joined in .. For fewe years I have been reading almost one hundred books .. Last year I have read about three hundred.. I don't know this year yet. My goal is slow down next year to read .. I probaly read more than 144 next year.

message 131: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments Thanks for the invite Crystal. I have never kept track of the number of books that I read per year, but this is a great way to see how many I am actually reading per year. I was thinking I would probably do about 90-100 this year, but I am going to push through to try to get to 144.

Great idea.

message 132: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments My husband ran in to medical issues and was hospitalized. That means I'm beehind on my posting on my read books. I've posted those I've read this year through mid Oct. I'm at 402.
Medical issues take time but nothing but unconsciousness stops my reading. It's how I unwind and handle life's stressors. I usually read 4-5 hours before I go to sleep. So even on work days I generally read a whole book. If I don't have to fit work in, I frequently read 2 or sometimes 3 books. Thank God, we have one of the best library systems. They let you keep 25 books on hold. When one come in, I mmove a book from my wanted list to the hold list. I usually have 25-30 books out on my card and 15-20 on my daughter's. Gives me a bit of selection in picking the day's reading. LOL

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments I'm always up for a new book. I'm hoping to broaden my reading. With all the people on the list, if I just read the books that get 4 or 5 stars, I should find some new, great authors. Oh Boy!Better than candy.

402 rocks. Whew! I wish I could read as much in a year, too.

message 136: by Rayni (new)

Rayni | 135 comments I laughed when I read the invitation to join this group. "Fat chance," I thought. But I have been working on my to be read list, sorting & printing it. I have 146 books on my TBR list. Some of them are just sitting around the house. I thought it would be nice if I could pare that number down, because it seems like I'm always adding to it, but never taking any off.

So, I'm in. I only have 15 books in my 2009 reads folder. In school I'd read incessantly until my mom put a limit on the number of books I could check out of the library at a time, 5 a week. I go in spurts in my reading now.

Did you know that 144 is a gross? So, my goal is a gross of books :)

Rayni

Lisa, I've been on PaperbackSwap for about 3 1/2 years, and I LOVE it. I've swapped over 200 books.

I particularly like the "first in, first out" aspect of it, because I think it's fair. If there's something you want to put on your wishlist, you just get in line... no waiting to pounce on something as soon as it's posted. Plus, it's super convenient now that you can print postage from the site.

yes i am on mooch i just sent u a friend request. Bookins is a swapping site but it does cost money to get books. I think its at $4.49 per book/dvd. Why I like it is they have a Ebay type thing going where I sell all my old junk for book points.

message 142: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 17 comments Thanks Crystal for inviting me. As far an reading it is a huge goal for me. I do not usually set a number of books that I will read in any give period. I just pick up the book and read. I will see how this pans out for me.

message 143: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (mblisa) | 92 comments Thanks for the invitation! This group sounds great.~
I have never set a goal on how many books to read in a year, so this will be a good challenge for me. :)
I do have a huge "tbr" stack, so this challenge will be great! I usually read 2 or 3 books at a time, and read about 3 books a month. Im looking forward to reading more! :)

Welcome Deborah, and Melissa, it's great to have you both aboard.

message 145: by Susan (new)

Susan (superbookfreak) | 115 comments Thanks for the invite. I have managed to read more this year than I did last year. So I'm hoping that I can read 144 books next year or close to it.

message 146: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (mcipher) Thanks for the invite, Crystal - this should definitely be interesting! 144 seems like a lot of books, but I think I've read more than that this year, or at least very near to that, so we'll see.... I like not having a specific goal of which book I'm going to read, just a number - I think that makes it easier to really meet the goal.

message 147: by ~Sara~ (new)

~Sara~ | 171 comments I was so excited when I saw this post. What a great idea! I've never tracked the number of books I read but I've always been interested, so now I'll know. I do read a lot, so this should (hopefully) be fairly easy for me, but I read in spurts too. I'll read 6-7 books one week and none the next. I'm looking forward to keeping track of them. Thank you!

Kelly Fw2books - hi and welcome :)

It's funny how many people are opposed to Oprah's book club pics. :P I've read 16 or so from her list - liked most of them, but HAAAAAAATED two of them (Sula and Gap Creek). Most of the rest of her list, I'd probably never touch, but there are a few more I'd like to check out... not b/c she picked them, but b/c they look good.

message 150: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Fw2books wrote: "There's enough... crap... in RL.. that I'm just not interested in reading about them in books. Ironic since I enjoy a good mystery, but it's entertainment. I prefer something that allows for more detachment... I'm trying to explain the difference... "

I totally understand what you mean, and totally agree! For a while there, she was picking fun books from new authors - this was years ago - and I loved most of those. Like The Deep End of the Ocean, Here on Earth, Where the Heart Is, The Pilot's Wife, Midwives. They were really good books, interesting, had some mystery to them - not depressing like most of her other picks!!

So yeah, I agree with you, other than that small period of time when she was actually picking good stuff. :)
