It took me a long time to read this, even though the chapters are very short and the writing is beautiful. The story alternates between characters, which can be a relief when it gets heavy. The writing itself is flawless -- I got the impression that the author polished every sentence a hundred times -- and the detail is astonishing. This is one of those books where you feel that you are learning without intending to - about locks and radios and seashells, and, Nazi Germany.
