I remember there was a spaceship 'school bus' that was dropping kids off at home along various planets and galaxies. Two (or maybe three) were at the very end of the route and got bored. Fiddled with a food machine (that would dispense food to all children and that apparently was the same 'food' material just reshaped into what the kid wanted, like a banana or a burger, so technically the whole thing right to the peel was edible) before they found the empty control room and played with the controls. They accidentally knocked the spaceship off course and ended up getting lost.
I also remember that they wound up at a planet that was much more primitive, iron age or something, but beyond that I can't remember much. (Except that the boy they met had long hair in the drawing and I decided when I was a kid that long hair was attractive.)
I'd love to read this book again! Any help would be fantastic.
