For the research-minded!

A few historical cases I've been reading up on lately...

Judith Coplon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_C...

Colonel Rudolf Abel
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_...

I'll add more as they occur to me

Just goes to show it's not funny anymore when someone loses an eye

*I kinda think Charles McCarry drew themes from the Judith Coplon case for one of the story threads in his classic
The Last Supper (Paul Christopher #5) by Charles McCarry

the chase through the church in Poland, involving Kazimir Baransky
.. not found on the web, anywhere

Soviet use of a 'dummy bus' similar to the plot twist found in Hitchcock's 'Torn Curtain'

Graeme Shimmin (shimbo) | 10 comments That Admiral Kolchak book fits with your 'book within a book' thread too because there's a novel Kolchak's Gold by Brian Garfield where the hero investigates the mystery in the Soviet archives.

Now that's an excellent tip. Garfield is a fine writer. Ty!

true incident which took place during WWII which reads like the basis of LeCarre's 'Tinker, Tailor': the disastrous 'Operation North Pole' undertaken by the SOE

Nope. I'm reading about it in a printed book. There's naturally a wikipedia article (I'm sure) but it can't do the topic justice.
