Lianne (eclecticreading) I recently finished reading Ian McEwan's Saturday. It was all right, but not as good as Atonement and Amsterdam I find.

I heard a lot of good talk about 13 Reasons Why. Is it as compelling as the say?

Joe (joewig) | 7 comments I just finished reading:

- Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and Its Aftermath; A blisteringly straightforward accounting of the surrender of US troops to the Japanese in the Philippines during the beginning of the WWII and their treatment thereafter. Harrowing! 4 stars

- Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Faith in Community; Insightful and encouraging words on cherishing what God has given us. Bonhoeffer, a Christian many compared to Paul, was martyred for his beliefs by the Gestapo during WWII. 4 stars

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this book up at a thrift store, but it was worth the $2.50 I spent. The ability of the author to use description to create place and mood made reading enjoyable. The story is part coming into one's own, part mystery, part supernatural, and part love stories. All of these elements are woven together to tell a story that kept the tension of the plot steady throughout.

If anyone has seen the movie, I'd be interested in knowing if it is worth seeing.

message 413: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) The last book I finished was Carlos Ruiz Zafon's The Prince of Mist, which was an interesting read, very eerie at times xD

Joe (joewig) | 7 comments Wild Child: and Other Stories; You don't have to know much about the author's life or background to realize how many aspects of his character and experiences shine through the lives, attitudes, emotions and timber of the characters and plots of these 14 short stories. They will leave an impact on you as well. Worthwhile read.

Joe (joewig) | 7 comments The Road; a well-written page turning journey down the road of a post nuclear USA. It’s bleak. It’s morose. It’s brutal and the story’s characters find they are definitely not in Kansas any more. It’s a Cormac McCarthy masterpiece that spares no punches. Intense, graphic and a worthwhile read. Their journey will stay with you for a long time.

A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer; Another good book for Christians on fasting and prayer although he does take a detour into the political, but it only strengths the points he makes about fasting and prayer. Yes it could have been said in less words, but then it wouldn’t be John Piper.

Joe (joewig) | 7 comments I just finished reading Hope & Other Dangerous Pursuits; Lalani’s first novel and it reads like a free flowing expose of the lives of four desperate people who attempt to leave their plight in Morocco to illegally cross the Straits of Gibraltar to Spain for a better way of living. While it ends somewhat abruptly, it's a satisfying quick read -- well worth it.

message 418: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) Last book I finished was Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls. It was interesting, though I think I may need to re-read it at some point as I seemed to have missed a few details =/

Catherine (catarinacanhota) | 52 comments I finished The History of Costa Rica by Ivan Molina. A short overview of history that serves as a jumping off point for further, more in depth reading.

message 427: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I've read 3 books since last Friday:
The Kalahari Typing School for Men (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, #4) by Alexander McCall Smith I thought this was a great read. I'm still in love with the series and I'm glad things are looking up for the character Grace Makutsi. 5 stars
The Full Cupboard of Life (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, #5) by Alexander McCall Smith I enjoyed this book but it is my least favourite book of the series so far. I just thought it dragged on and on but I gave it 4 stars.
Wild Heart The Story of Joy Adamson, Author of Born Free by Anne E. Neimark I adored this book. I read it in just under two hours last night. I'm obsessed with Joy Adamson and her husband George Adamson. This book was wonderful it had me tear up when they talked about her murder though. I gave it 5 stars.

Catherine (catarinacanhota) | 52 comments Extremely Loud and Incredibly CloseI picked this book up in a thrift store because I recognized the cover as one someone in this group had reviewed. I hadn't originally put it on my read list, but for the price I gave it a look see. I have to say I'm glad I did!

The reason I passed it over the first time is that the topic seemed so morose. The story is about a boy who loses his father in the Twin Tower attack on 9/11 and his search for something that would give him "closure." It also ties back to his granparents and the traumatic experience they shared in WWII that tied them to each other after they had a chance encounter in NYC.

There were several things that kept me interested. Most of the story is told from the quirky sense of reality of a nine-year-old boy. At times it shifts to the grandmother or grandfather as the two tragedies are intertwined, but it is mainly the boy, Oskar. As Oskar goes on his quest he interacts with others, who each have their own story. Their stories and Oskar's interactions with them give depth to a novel that could easily have been mired down by the painful process of living after such a loss. This is an excellent and well told story that is even worth the full price of the book!

Kimberly I finished Long Way Down by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. I loved it. I found parts of it hilarious and others touching. I give it 5 stars.

Dawn (just_read01) | 27 comments I just finished Kate Racculia's "This Must Be the Place." Very enjoyable - entertaining while making me think, too. I also just finished up "The Tower, the Zoo and the Tortoise" by Julia Stewart and loved it!

message 435: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) I just finished Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan and it was quite enjoyable, except that it has some gruesome violence and the narration keeps switching from one person to another. I'm trying to read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows next.

message 436: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catarinacanhota) | 52 comments Today I finished reading The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. This is a story of a couple from India who marry through an arranged marriage and move to the United States. It is about their life as newcomers to the United States and about their children who are born here. The book is not what I would consider well written from a literature perspective. What it does offer is an excellent insight into what it is like for the first two generations of family as they try to find a place in America, honoring both the traditions from their homeland and those of their new country. In a time when new immigrants are often looked on in a negative light, it is worth reading this book to gain perspective on what it is like to be a newcomer to the United States.

message 437: by Ronyell (new)

Ronyell (rabbitearsblog) Catherine, that sounds like a great book! I noticed that it is always hard for newcomers to the United States to get used to a new culture, so this book sounds like a great insight on how newcomers feel when they move into a different country.

message 438: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Leavitt (carolineleavitt) | 4 comments ROOOM by Emma Donoghue. The best book I have read all year. Unsettling haunting novel told from the view point of a happy 5-year old boy who was born in captivity and lives in a single room with his mother (He has no idea, we do, slowly, slowly, slowly.) Amazing book.
