I heard a lot of good talk about 13 Reasons Why. Is it as compelling as the say?

- Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and Its Aftermath; A blisteringly straightforward accounting of the surrender of US troops to the Japanese in the Philippines during the beginning of the WWII and their treatment thereafter. Harrowing! 4 stars
- Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Faith in Community; Insightful and encouraging words on cherishing what God has given us. Bonhoeffer, a Christian many compared to Paul, was martyred for his beliefs by the Gestapo during WWII. 4 stars

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this book up at a thrift store, but it was worth the $2.50 I spent. The ability of the author to use description to create place and mood made reading enjoyable. The story is part coming into one's own, part mystery, part supernatural, and part love stories. All of these elements are woven together to tell a story that kept the tension of the plot steady throughout.

If anyone has seen the movie, I'd be interested in knowing if it is worth seeing.

A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer; Another good book for Christians on fasting and prayer although he does take a detour into the political, but it only strengths the points he makes about fasting and prayer. Yes it could have been said in less words, but then it wouldn’t be John Piper.

Catherine, did you enjoy the book? Do you think it was worthwhile reading?

The reason I passed it over the first time is that the topic seemed so morose. The story is about a boy who loses his father in the Twin Tower attack on 9/11 and his search for something that would give him "closure." It also ties back to his granparents and the traumatic experience they shared in WWII that tied them to each other after they had a chance encounter in NYC.
There were several things that kept me interested. Most of the story is told from the quirky sense of reality of a nine-year-old boy. At times it shifts to the grandmother or grandfather as the two tragedies are intertwined, but it is mainly the boy, Oskar. As Oskar goes on his quest he interacts with others, who each have their own story. Their stories and Oskar's interactions with them give depth to a novel that could easily have been mired down by the painful process of living after such a loss. This is an excellent and well told story that is even worth the full price of the book!
