jennifer (mascarawand) | 27 comments I finished "Evil Spirits:The Life Of Oliver Reed" by Cliff Goodwin. Reed was a difficult and lively man. One of those people who never tired, always running from one thing to the next whether it was a movie or an affair. I really enjoyed the book.

message 252: by Kat (new)

Kat (katheriner1990) Just finished The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. Amazing book.

message 253: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 9 comments I have recently read The Book Thief. It is an amazing book that can chane your complete outlook on life. All of the characters are very easy to fall in love with. I cried so much in the ending..but if it had a "happily ever after" I think it would've ruined the book a little. The ending was very sad, but a perfect ending to the perfect book.

Rose Chaulk | 11 comments I just finnished reading two books. Storm of the century by Stephen King was a very quick read. It was entertaining and an education as to what a screenplay looks like.
The second book was heartwrenching. Dragonfly Daughter available through Amazon and Authorhouse by Violet Rose is an honest account of the struggles a MTF went through in order find herself. It shows how transgendered people are considered disposible people. This poor woman lost all her friends, relatives and business aquantances just by admitting who she was. Very traumatic but a good read none the less.

Stef (buch_ratte) | 39 comments Last book to finish was THE CREATORS MAP by Emilio Calderon. I still wonder why he gave that title to the book because it was mainly about the love of two men to the same woman. The map was mentioned at the beginning and at the end. It was a nice reading anyway.

message 256: by Beth (new)

Beth I just finished Jhumpa Lahiri's (author of THE NAMESAKE) INTERPRETER OF MALADIES. This is her first book, a collection of short stories, which won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. If you're a fan of the short story form (and I am, enjoying both reading and writing them), then this book is for you! It's a wonderful understated collection of tales about people struggling with emotions we all feel.

Like some others here, I recently read THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL and enjoyed it, as I have every Phillipa Gregory book I've read. My husband and I visited Kent, England this summer and toured Hever Castle, the home of the Boleyn family. It was fascinating to see it after reading the book and before seeing the movie, which has a few brief shots of parts of the castle.

message 257: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished reading the last book of the Uglies series, "Extras" by Scott Westerfeld.

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 9 comments Ashley wrote: "I just finished reading the last book of the Uglies series, "Extras" by Scott Westerfeld."
What did you think of the series?
I have read Uglies and Pretties but then I got discouraged by the ending of Pretties I think..so I just stopped. Is it worth it to continue? Did you enjoy the series?..I think I liked Zane's character so much that when he got hurt in Pretties (or he was very sick..I don't remember) I was mad and didn't think I would enjoy the next book in the series.

message 259: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Jasmine, the series is really good. Not to spoil the series but if you didn't like what happen to Zane in Pretties, you are gonna hate what happens to him in Specials.

I thought so=/ Thank you=]

message 261: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) Jasmine would you like to know what happens to him in Specials?

message 262: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 9 comments Ashley, Well I think I already know..and I am too curious so I was reading comments for "specials" that had spoilers in them =x hehe..I really wanted him and Tally to be togher=[...I'm probably going to force myself to read specials even though I know there is no hope for the as a couple..its just annoying to not know what happens at the end of the series.

message 263: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) We can all get the happy endings we want...lol. I am a sucker for happy endings myself.

message 264: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jadorejas94) | 9 comments Same=] The only sad book I probably love is "The book thief."

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished reading "The Wednesday Letters" .It was a very quick read. Finished the book in like 3 days.

message 267: by Shannon SA (new)

Shannon SA (shannonsa) Just finished A Spot of Bother. At first I laughed out loud at the black humour, then I found it disturbing. I like Mark Haddon's style of writing, the very short chapters, each one a different POV, just towards the end POVs started summarising the previous POVs, which I don't like.

message 276: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) I recently finished Water for Elephants, The Road, and The Hobbit. I loved Water for Elephants and The Hobbit. I think The Road fell way short of its goal. I put down and didn't finish HP & the Sorcerer's Stone. It just didn't do anything for me.

Jim | 112 comments finished THE ART OF TRAVEL by Alain Botton
a great book combining the philosophy of travel with various concepts concerning art and philosophy plus recounts effect of travel on various artists like Van Gogh, Bauderlaire, Hopper and a number of philosophers view of travel
emphasis on noticing vs just seeing
will read before any new travels

finished THE HOUR I FIRST BELIEVED by Wally Lamb
intense book concerning Columbine shooting effect on a fictional character -good but a over the top on number of calamities that happen to main characters

message 278: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading "Marked" by P.C. and Kristin Cast.

message 279: by jennifer (new)

jennifer (mascarawand) | 27 comments I've just finished "The Blind Assassin' by Margaret Atwood. It took me a couple of weeks as it's over 500 pages and starts off slowly but is never boring. So many layers of intertwining story. She's a remarkable writer.

message 280: by Brighde (new)

Brighde | 2 comments I finished a book called Bad Monkeys a few days ago. It's by Matt Ruff. Sucks you in and keeps you there even after its done.

3) French women don't get fat

message 282: by Manda (new)

Manda The Panda (mandapanda17) | 7 comments I have finished reading
Enders Game by Orson Scott Card
I thought it was going to be another sci-fi heavily written for the male audience, but I enjoyed it. It had lots of action and depth I liked it.

message 283: by Jim (new)

Jim | 112 comments THE LONG WAY HOME:A BOY SOLDIER'S MEMOIR by Beah
tremendous book about what real trouble/tragedy can be
KILLING CASTRO by Lawrence Block
spare language, lot of communication about just what the title is and good information about Castro at his beginning
THE INFERNO by Dante
I just hope I don't make it there -how these punishments were in his mind is beyond me but the language is so evocative that even the subject matter is sometimes secondary

message 284: by Stef (new)

Stef (buch_ratte) | 39 comments Last night I finally finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. One of the best books I ever read.

message 285: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesliehealey) | 2 comments i just read Anne Perry's new William Monk mystery EXECUTION DOCK, and I loved it! She puts words to feelings and ideas that we never think about, but should. This one is about child trafficking: Monk and Hester have to find a murderer before he hurts another little boy.......not what you expect from the Victorians!

message 286: by Jim (new)

Jim | 112 comments MUSN'T GRUMBLE by Joseph Bennett - excellent travelogue about England and travel in general

STILL ALICE by Lisa Genova - good fiction book about Alzeheimers told from an early onset disease viewpoint with a lot of information and insight

message 287: by jennifer (new)

jennifer (mascarawand) | 27 comments Jim- I read "Musn't Grumble" a few weeks ago and enjoyed Bennett's rather unhappy travels.
I finished a couple this week- "The Postman Always Rings Twice" by James M. Cain and "The Alcoholics" by Jim Thompson, which is one of his weirder books, and if you're familiar with Thompson, you know that's saying something.

message 288: by John (new)

John (fishpathodoc) | 2 comments I just finished "Genghis: Birth of an Empire" by Conn Iggulden. It was fantastic. I never thought historical fiction could be so good. Read my review at Goodreads by searching the book author and/or title.

message 299: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) Well at 01:00 am I finished The Coffee Trader by David Liss. An intresting historical financial mystery and novel. I look forward to read more books from the same author. I recomend it to people that like historical fictiion and all kind of mysteries

message 300: by Avigail (new)

Avigail (avigailr) Well I started and finshed today The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K.Rowling I like it not as much as I liked the Harry Potter Series it is a 4 star this time. That's what I wrote about the book:
Good imitation of fairy tales, an interesting look into Dumbledore's character, a good look into some of the attitudes that underlie wizarding culture. I am surprised by how well the fairy tales of this book stand on their own, not just as small bits in the massive Harry Potter universe. I loved reading Dumbledore's part after each story though. How I MISS the Harry Potter series though!! It was pretty bitter sweet. But put something that has to do with Harry Potter in front of me and I will gobble it down with a smile.
