I just finished Measuring The World by Daniel Kehlmann. I loved that book. Well written and very interesting.
I finished The Swap by Antony Moore yesterday. I think it's his first book, so some parts are well done, other parts not so much. He writes funny characters though.
Finished The Three Musketeers by A. Dumas and then right after it Murphy's Boy by Torey Hayden.
Now I just have to decide what to read next.
Now I just have to decide what to read next.
I finished "Alas, Babylon" this summer. Are the other two books you read "end of the world" type books too?I thought it was a marvelous story, both in subject matter and as a snapshot of the mindset of the time period.
I agree, it's my favorite book by Phillapa Gregory. I love how ambitious Anne is. She's a regular Scarlett O'Hara when it comes to going after what she wants, no matter the cost.
I just finished: Dear American Airlines by Jonathan Miles--it didn't live up to it's promise of the first few pages (which were so funny)
Friday's Child by Georgette Heyer funny and tumultuous page-turning regency romance
Loving Frank by Nancy Horan very unexpected (I was actually shocked as the story unfolded)
Currently reading, "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz
On The Road, The Original Scroll. It was a tough read and I wasn't that into it, but there were a lot of good things about it too.
I like the way Kerouac writes.
I'm thinking of picking up the edited version soon.
Last night I finished Firmin - Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife by Sam Savage. Nice book although the first chapters weren't the very best but maybe it had to do with the fact that I had influenza.
I've finished Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha by Roddy Doyle and really recommend it. Some of the Irish slang has to be taken in context to understand, but it's very funny, and fast moving as so much of it is dialogue.
I just finished reading The Honkytonk Man by Clancy Carlile. I loved it. It was easily one of my favorites.
a couple of days ago, i finished Rain Fall by Barry Eisler, the first book of the John Rain series. Looking forward to his other books
I finally finished The Last Templar by Raymond Khoury. I loved the book and think about buying his next one as well.
Some really great ones I've read since the last half of July have been The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell, To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis, The Grave Tattoo by Val McDermid, Silent in the Grave and Silent in the Sanctuary (2 books) by Deanna Raybourne, The Lace Reader by Brunonia Barry, The Heretic's Daugher by Kathleen Kent, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, and The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penny. I've also gone through the Tess Gerritsen series with detective Jane Rizzoli and M.E. Maura Isles, as well as her novel, The Bone Garden. It's been a very good reading period for me. Now, October has brought about a slow down due to work and some other matters. Dang, I hate that. I am currently reading Dracula.
Yes, from the gallant, galloping opening to the thrilling conclusion, I like this one, too! I'm also a fan of Templar History and fiction. Tom
I recently finished 2 books:Precious Blood by Jonathan Hayes-really good, but don't read it at night if you scare easily. LOL...I learned this the hard way.
Ice Station by Matt Reilly- action packed from beginning to end!

Wes, good to hear that you enjoyed Elwewhere. I'm suppsed to get that from bookmooch.comI just finished The House on Mango Street.
Just finished "The 19th Wife" and "Shattered Dreams." The subject matter of both is polygamy, and they are fantastic reads.
I just finished Zapped by Carol Higgins Clark. It was ok. Hadn't read anything by her and probably won't again. I reviewed it and gave it 2 stars.
I just finished The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. It was the second time I've read it. I read it a few years ago, but I wanted to refresh my memory before going to the movie of it this coming weekend. I loved the book the first time and loved it again this time. I hope the movie doesn't disappoint me.
Last book to finish was Ex Libri - Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman. Interesting book but wasn't what I had hoped for.
I just finished "Loving Frank". I found it bland and mildly enjoyed it.
While Wright's personality was evident, the characterization of Mamah was not dynamic and I am sure she must have been a dynamic individual.
While Wright's personality was evident, the characterization of Mamah was not dynamic and I am sure she must have been a dynamic individual.
I just finished Girl With the Pearl Earring. It was very slow-paced, but I loved it. Just simplicity of life back then fascinates me. The end was honestly unexpected, but I liked it. This book still had me thinking even after I put it down.
Last weekend I finished Faking It by Marianne Macdonald and Living With Books by Estelle Ellis while watching the New York Marathon.Faking It: Her other books are definitely better
Living with books: Loved every page of it. Will definitely reread it from time to time
Just finished Snow Flower & The Secret Fan by Lisa See. It was wonderful. Usually the type of historical fiction I read is about women, love, and royalty. This incorporated women, friendship, and Chinese culture. It was inspiring & literally breath-taking. I recommend it to all women.
I loved Snow Flower also. I read it with my book club, and we held our discussion meeting at a local Chinese restaurant. Some of the scenes were a little hard to get through (like the breaking of the bones in the girls' feet to make them small), but it was historically accurate and so powerful. I also highly recommend the book.
The Crown ConspiracyRead this and loved it. A great fantasy adventure without the typical cliches or long dry prose. I would actually recommend this to people who don't usually read fantasy, as it is just a plain good book. Looking forward to the sequel which I heard is supposed to be out soon.
Lauren, I agree with you. Snow Flower was an excellent book. Beth, I agree with you on the feet binding issue. I really struggled with that. But, it is one of my favorites. I tend to read historical fiction, civil war era, prairie days and I do like the kings, queens and princesses books as well.
I was recommended to read the Princess Diaries books by a friend. The last book I read was Princess Mia. I am currently reading DEEP IN THE HEART OF TROUBLE by Deeanne Gist.
I finished The Blue Bottle Club by Penelope J. Stokes last night. Was the first and last of her books I read. Too much church stuff for me.
I just finished Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I truly could not put it down. I loved the history told through most of the book of Cal's family. It was a great read.
I just finished reading "Everything Changes" by Jonathan Tropper. Love that guy!I'm now reading Anita Shreve's newest, "Testimony."
I've just finished Fabulous Fizz by Alice King. It's all about champagne-who makes what, the notes in certain champagnes, which one to have with an entree versus a dessert. And lovely photos too.
My last two truly literary works were The Time Traveler's Wife and The Gargoyle. I would suggest that you read both without hesitation! Since I finished Gargoyle I am on a YA mission to finish both the Uglies series and the Twilight series!
