This question may have been asked/answered already, but are we sure David isn't an Epic? His reflexes during the fight with Newton, Regalia, and Obliteration were way to fast to be normal. If you compare how good he is at the beginning of the book to how good he is now there's a huge jump, I doubt it was just adrenaline. It especially showed when he dodged bullets and Newton's super speed attacks.

That's still up in the air. I've had suspicions as well.

It's how I justify the way he beat an high epic and a very strong epic on his on own. He also withstood a hell of beating after Prof's powers wore off.

Maybe that's why Calamity couldn't make him into one, because he already was. Maybe not though..

Maybe his powers became dormant when he "refused" them, but I'm thinking maybe they'll pop out in an intense fight in the next book.

I very much hope he ends up with Epic powers, but it would be somewhat against theme for the series.

Ever read the Xanth novels? A Spell for Chameleon has a reveal that is exactly my theory for David. Spoliers below.
