John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5193 comments When I went searching for Sword of Rhiannon, I saw many references to Black Amazon of Mars. It's a novella, out of copyright and free on gutenberg.org.

I downloaded it and have read about the first quarter. I'm enjoying it more than I did Sword of Rhiannon. The setup is better and the characters' motivations more clear.

Anyone else reading this story? Thoughts?

Sky | 665 comments I haven't read either yet, but thanks for the suggestion!

It looks like you can easily grab it on Amazon for Kindle for free too:

Do you think its better to read BAoM first?

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5193 comments Now at about halfway through, I'm finding BAoM thematically similar. It probably doesn't matter which one you read first. They do not seem to be related stories.

Edited to add: As one reviewer said, don't expect scientific realism. It's more like "Conan on Mars." Take it for what it is - pulp SF.

Yup - I am reading it at the moment too. I have to admit that I love Leigh Brackett and I don't care whether the science is 'a bit dodgy' (if indeed there is any!) I read Brackett for her imagination and writing style - if I want realism, then I read someone else...

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5193 comments I'm glad to hear it. I had not previously read Brackett, a bit puzzling since I read omnivorously as a young 'un. Perhaps her books were not available used for some reason, I tended to buy from used bookstores. I enjoyed the transplant of Welsh mysticism and the cosmic feel of both stories.

Tina (javabird) | 765 comments I've had BAoM on my to-read list for some time. I guess I should read it next.

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5193 comments It's short and fun! Give it a go. Easy download from Gutenberg press or Amazon, too.

Mark Catalfano (cattfish) I listened to it on the Protecting Project Pulp podcast back when that was a thing

message 10: by Miranda (new)

Miranda I think I might give it a try aswell since its short (unlike my to-read list)
I liked the descriptive parts of Sword of Rhiannon, but the characters not so much.
