Yep often go to Culloden & i find it a very mystical place with a sad feeling about it. Grandparents used to take us there on the anniversary of the battle to lay flowers on family clan stones.

Mimi, I think it sounds very exciting! Look how many different places you have been! I was born in San Francisco, California. I was raised in San Rafael, CA (about 50 miles north of San Francisco)I now live in Sonoma County, CA (about another 15 miles North) The only time I have ever left the USA was a cruise through the Mexican Riviera on our Honeymoon. That was 22 years ago. My Parents still live in the same house I grew up in.

Carren Kay | 953 comments I live in Ohio (born and raised). Now that my youngest is in college, my husband and I have started to travel more. I've been to Alaska (everyone should go there!), Ireland, Nova Scotia up into Cape Breton National Park and in September of this year we head to Scotland for two weeks. Can't wait!

Miss Kate (misskatesays) | 83 comments I'm in New York City. I grew up in Maine, lived in NJ for awhile, and always said I'd never stay in NYC. But I married a boy from Brooklyn, and it looks like I'm here for good! I've been all over the USA and parts of Canada. (I love Montreal!) It wasn't until I got married that I needed a passport, though. We went to Ireland on our honeymoon, and later Venice. I definitely want to do more traveling!

Well, Croatia is another place I always meant to visit, because my parents have such fond memories of it, but because of everything that's happened in the 90s I'm not sure of the reception(I'm from Serbia)... So near, but still so far...

Leea I think I went to Lodi once I was living in San Rafael at the time so i think it was 3 hours or so. Does that sound right?
In any case not to terribly far! It's a small world, hmm wonder if Jem will ever get to Disney Land and learn that song? lol

Well, there will always be idiots, but we have lots of Serbian tourists, more each year, especially on the islands during the summer. :)

message 263: by Mimi (new)

Mimi Smith | 199 comments Oh, that's good to know. Maybe some day...
Esp. the island, because of all the the stories I've heard growing up...

I have only seen Newcastle by train and the train station and by ferry. I've seen a lot of Hadrian's Wall though.

Yup, our islands are beautiful. :)

message 266: by Mimi (new)

Mimi Smith | 199 comments I even made a list of the places I'd like to visit, lol.
1. Places to see: Dubrovnik, Korcula(the town), Split, Plitvice, Pula, Brioni...
2.The islands for the seaside vacation: Korcula, Brac, Hvar, Vis, Mljet...
I'd be happy to see even a few...
Anything to add on my wish list:)?

message 267: by Tihana (new)

Tihana (tihana_split) | 41 comments I think you covered just about everything I like the best or would love to visit too. :D Korcula is town I go to every summer because my grandmother is from Korcula and I go to Brac a lot too. I love Dubrovnik and Hvar. I didn't see other places yet, but they're on my list too.

message 268: by Lotte (new)

Lotte | 330 comments Hi Mimi and Tihana, may an Austrian make some suggestions to your list of topics of the Croation coast? This area used to be one of the favourite holiday resorts before the troubles of the '90s. I went there again in 2002, when it was safe again and the onrush of tourist had not yet started and I revisited 4 years in a row! I took a ferry from Rijeka to Dobrovnik and returned north "island hopping". Korcula is great, my favourite is Hvar, though. Arriving in Split by ship, you just walk across the street and you are right in Diokletian's Palace, where they built the old town in and cleverly used it as fortification. Don't miss Trogir, Zadar and the island of Rab! Maybe you can imagine that it will take mare than one vacation to enjoy it?

Did I get it right, Tihana, you live in Split? And Mimi you are in the States and have Croatian roots?

message 269: by Mimi (new)

Mimi Smith | 199 comments Nope, I'm from Serbia. I live in Vrsac, a small town near Belgrade.
While they were young my parents used to go to the Croatian cost all the time. They would just take their camping gear, hop on a train and wander around, hopping islands and places. They even spent their honeymoon there! So they have a deep and abiding love for the sea and they talk about all their adventures there. I just listen, mostly. I hope I'll be able to see all the places with them, and see them through their eyes...
Anyway, there is a possibility I'll get to visit Istra soon. I think Mom and Dad have some friends there, so it would be a place to start.
The main issue with going is-how?
If we go by car, then the SRB plates could be problem(cause there are always idiots), because I had some friends that drove and had their car wrecked ...

Sorry for getting it all mixed up! Now I also understand your qualms to travel to Dalmatia. NO "understand" is the wrong word, I get your meaning, though. I could not put your words together and what would prevent you from going there. What a shame, and you being so near, of course it would be best to take a car. Is this ever going to end?

message 271: by Tihana (new)

Tihana (tihana_split) | 41 comments Lotte: Yes, I live in Split, inside the Diocletian Palace actually. :D I'm glad you enjoy coming here.

Mimi: I get why you're scared about cars being wrecked because they have wrong plates, friend of mine went to Zagreb with Split plates and his car got the same treatment. What can I say, world is filled with idiots.

message 272: by Mimi (new)

Mimi Smith | 199 comments Lotte wrote: " Is this ever going to end? "
I believe it will someday. I have to believe that 10/15 years from now people won't even have to worry about such things. Or maybe I just want to believe that...

Tihana wrote: "What can I say, world is filled with idiots. "
I know, there are plenty of them here, too. Every tume I think 'now, I've seen everything' something happens that makes me revaluate human stupidity, particularly that of my countrymen.
First there was the burning of the American embassy(I still can't believe that happened), then a Frenchman was killed because a Serbian club lost to a French one, then the raging on The Pride Parade, the incident in Italy with the fans...
Does it ever end? It's no wonder people have such a bad impression about Serbia, when they only hear about bad things(which are many, unfortunately)

message 273: by Tihana (last edited Feb 26, 2011 11:31AM) (new)

Tihana (tihana_split) | 41 comments I want to believe the same thing, world would be a better place.

Yeah, I can count whole bunch of similar cases here, especially when it comes to football fans, I don't even want to think what will happen on the Pride Parade in June. It's really annoying to see what ugly picture we paint of ourselves to the rest of the world. I agree, no wonder they see us both that way when we prove their point time and time again.
