I was trying to figure out where Fraser's Ridge is and the stone circle that Roger found while he was trying to escape from the indians...
Wendy, I'm a Detroit suburb girl too. Born in raised there, then married my high school sweetheart and moved to San Diego because he was in the Navy. When he got out of the Navy 10 years later we moved back "home" to the suburbs of Detroit with our boys, now 16 and 12. We'll be celebrating 18 years of marriage a week from today! I got married at 18 so I've been joking about being married half my life lately.

Well, there's lots of old caves and rocky mountainsides in these old mountains. Don't believe I've ever seen a stone circle, accept some of the old cemeteries look like it sometimes. I would love to be able to go find the exact area Fraser's Ridge was supposed to be located. The best I can figure is between the Boone/Blowing Rock area and Wilkesboro. My son went to Appalachian State University, so I've been all through the area up there. It's about 1&1/2 hours from my house. It helps me feel "akin" to the Fraser family.

Quite a few Michiganders here. I went to junior and high school in Plymouth. Have family in Livonia, Willis, and Ann Arbor now. Been in west Scotland for 10 years but get back to Michigan every xmas.
My dream has always been to go to Ireland. Once I got so completely into Outlander, I started wanting to visit Scotland. I would love to take about a month and visit Ireland, England, Wales and top it off with Scotland.DG makes everything seem so real. I love the way she describes the Appalachian Mountains where I live. She must have visited them at some point. I'd love to show her some of my special mountain places.
I think it would be cool for DG to incorporate the "Brown Mountain Lights" into the next book. This area is probably less than an hour from Fraser's Ridge. You know she did that with the Loch Ness monster.
Wendy wrote: "Oh, it would be wonderful to live in Scotland. Much better then Michigan, lol."Aye, much better! The weather here sucks but otherwise I love it!
I'm on the other side of Detroit than you other Michiganders. I'm in Warren. How do you like Ypsi Wendy? My oldest is a Junior in high school and starting to seriously consider EMU for college. Only 45 minutes away so I like that, but far enough away that he won't be bringing me laundry to do every week and I like that better!Annie, how does the Scotland weather compare to Michigan weather? For some reason I always thought it would be similar to our spring and fall all year round there.

I've been here for years, I'd say it's a good option.
Cheri wrote: "Annie, how does the Scotland weather compare to Michigan weather? For some reason I always thought it would be similar to our spring and fall all year round there."Scotland is as far north as Alaska but due to the Gulf Stream we don't get much snow. I would be in heaven if the weather was like Michigan's spring and fall! We get LOTS of drizzle/showers. It's common to need to wear a fleece in summer. Last summer was pretty cold. I think the number of days it hit 70F or above was about 4 or 5. Otherwise 60's, 50's.
The east gets some snow but I'm in west on a coast so our winters are high winds, more rain than usual, cold (low 40's daytime) and occasional snow which melts within a day.
I'll just say I love Scotland in spite of the weather.
Lisa wrote: "I live in New Zealand :)"Hello, you're my antipodean! I'm her in Central Europe, Vienna/Austria and we, together with Annie, seem to be the odd ones out in this group!
Exactly two years ago I visited your lovely country and had a great time there. Having read the guidebooks, I brought my "Scottish/Irish Outfit", but did not need it at all. Even the Milford Sound was calm, sunny and bright blue sky - I asked and was told this is supposed to be 4 to 5 times a year. Where do you live?
Hi to all,I was born in Kentucky then moved to Tennessee...I've lived in Raleigh, North Carolina for the past 21 years.
Born in Amarillo, Texas. Raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where I lived for 21 years. And now live in Elko, Nevada, (northeastern part of the state) where I moved in 1999. Next year planning on moving back home to Oklahoma.

I worked at UTK for the 10 years I lived there.
@Annie,I see that you now live in Scotland...I'm so envious. My DH and I were in England and Scotland on vacation in 2009 and I fell in love with Scotland. We went there because of my obsession with the Outlander series .

I love it (except the weather). The wind is howling now. Love the Scots, incredible landscape, history, etc. Did you do the Outlander tour? I've visited Inverness, Culloden, and Clava Cairns.

We didn't take the official Outlander tour, but went to Edinburgh and then up into the Highlands to Glencoe, Loch Ness and Inverness. I want to go back and visit Culloden, Clava Cairns then to the west coast to the Isle of Skye. Actually, I'd like to take a couple of weeks and just drive all over the country.
I live in Pleasant Hill, CA. I have lived in various cities in the San Francisco Bay Area my whole life. I have lived in Hayward, San Francisco, Alameda, Castro Valley, and a few years ago bought a house in Pleasant Hill. So, I will be in Pleasant Hill for a while :)

"I recommend visiting some of the islands! Most tourists miss them because they take a big chunk of time out of the trip. If you like standing stones, cairns, stone circles the best place for that is Kilmartin. It's in my county - Argyll & Bute.
It would take more than two weeks to drive all over the country. It looks small on a map but driving takes a long time as every road winds around a loch.
Annie wrote: "Cynthia wrote: "We didn't take the official Outlander tour, but went to Edinburgh and then up into the Highlands to Glencoe, Loch Ness and Inverness. Argyll & Bute is where Oban and Mull, Islay and Jura are located on the west coast right? I heard it's lovely.
I live in upstate New York, about 3 hours outside of NY City. While I like visiting the city I prefer to live in areas with a medium-sized population. ;-)
Cynthia wrote: "Thanks for the recommendation re Kilmartin! I'll make a note of it for our next trip. Argyll & Bute is where Oban and Mull, Islay and Jura are located on the west coast right? I live on the other side of Argyll, 'doon the water from Glesga'.

Is "Glesga" Scots for Glasgow?
Aye, Glesga is Glasgow, Embra is Edinburgh in the appropriate accents. Doon the water is lowland Scots - it's down the Firth of Clyde from Glasgow to other areas like mine which then goes out to the Irish Sea and then the Atlantic.
Google 'lallans' if you're curious about the lowlands Scots language. Jamie uses both lowlands and gaelic in the books which for the area he's from is okay, but usually you use lowlands if you are from the lowlands and gaelic is from the highlands.
Annie wrote: "Aye, Glesga is Glasgow, Embra is Edinburgh in the appropriate accents. Doon the water is lowland Scots - it's down the Firth of Clyde from Glasgow to other areas like mine which then goes out ..."
This is why Tom Christie had such disdain for Scottish speaking, correct? Because it represented Highlanders and he was a Lowlander?
Edinburgh is different from the rest of Scotland. Not sure how it would have been in that time though. Right now it's called the most English city in Scotland. They've been known to turn their noses up at Glaswegians and I suppose that also works with other parts of Scotland like Inverness. I didn't think it was correct that someone would speak both Gaelic and lowlands Scots, but my dh says that can be true depending on where they are from. Dh grew up speaking lowlands but the county we live in which is 'doon the water' from Glasgow was all Gaelic-speaking until about 100 years ago. As the crow flies we are only about 20 miles from Glasgow but by road/water it's much further.
Methinks I'm going to do some research! Think I'll be adding a page to my blog.
Well, I live in the same country I have been born in-Serbia. Not so exciting, I know...Has one upside though, I get to do the whole Europe tour. Have been to Italy(Venice, Verona, Rome...), Paris, Prague, the Dracula tour in Romania(Very entertaining, went with my sister and we couldnt stop laughing), Vienna, Athens...
In Europe I still want to see...Moscow, St. Petersburg, London and Scotland.
Will most likely never cross the Atlantic, though...
I live in Scotland! Have never wanted to be anywhere else. This winter has been really bad, very cold and lots of snow but is very beautiful

Aberdeen, whereaboots are you?
I was born in Alabama, and lived most of my life in NE Georgia with a few years in Florida. I am a southern girl and will always be. I love Ga but like so many others yearn for Scotland and have for many years..something about it draws me and i am sure many others feel the same way.
Morag wrote: "I live in Scotland! Have never wanted to be anywhere else. This winter has been really bad, very cold and lots of snow but is very beautiful"Morag, I am so jealous! What is it like to live in Scotland?? Have you been to any of the places in Outlander? What is your favorite part of Scotland (best places to visit, etc.) What do you eat there?? I have always dreamed of visiting one day...when my husband and I get enough money to do so. I have also told my husband how cool I think it would be to live there! I have met a few people who were born and raised there, but the say they like it better here in Seattle. I wonder why??

Mimi wrote: "Have you ever been to Culloden?"I've been to Culloden. Looks like the residents of Scotland in this group are all in opposite corners. I'm in the west.
Scotland, what an exotic & magical place to live to be, sigh... I'm just in Middleburg, FL. Moved from Chicago Oct '09 but I was borned and raised in Dalat, Viet-Nam until the VN war, does that count for exotic?

One of these day, I will have to make a trip to Fraser's Ridge. Just to be closer to J&C. Isn't that crazy? :-)
