TGWCF: Chapters 8-14

I was hoping that September would have able to sneak into the palace before the Marquess found her out. I was surprised when September started turning into a tree while visiting Autumn. The rule of fairy food must be all psychological though because up to this point she was able to believe she wasn't eating fairy food. So I wonder if September would have felt the effects of the food if Doctor Fallow didn't convince her.

On a side note my favorite quote (even though it's back in chapter one) has to be the section about heartless children. The explanation is so believable!

So September is finally circumnavigating Fairyland in a ship of her own making. It only took 14 chapters to get to the story title!

This is the section of the book where I shifted from "oh this is a nice book to read, but I probably would have loved it a lot more when I was younger" to "Wow I just can't put this book down". I feel that in thee chapters it started becoming less like "Alice in Wonderland" or other traditional otherworldly children's stories into something more of its own tale and I really appreciate that as a reader and as someone who minored in Children's Literature in college. This is the sort of book that my classes would really be able to discuss and dig into and that's always appreciated.

I absolutely love this book now. The characters are so intriguing and I love how something happens all the time. The narrator's voice is so interesting, too! Valente is really surprising me here with everything. This is definitely going to be a favorite of mine.

Also, the Marquess is SO. BRATTY. Ugh.

I'm still enjoying this book and I admire how Valente has crammed in so many memorable characters so far. The chapters with the alchemists and then with Death in the Worsted Wood were necessary I think to stop the book succumbing to an overdose of cuteness.

Like Abby earlier in this thread, I was glad to see September embark on her circumnavigation at last. September's to-do list is getting quite lengthy so I expect the last part of this book to accelerate a bit. Some kind of comeuppance for the Marquess would be much appreciated

As a reader still new to the genre of fantasy this book can still be hard for me to follow at times. I am enjoying the "mini adventures" September seems to be going on because they speed up the book for me. However I do find myself wishing that it would get back to directly defeating the Marquess and saving Queen Mallow. Also knowing that this book is part of a sequel makes me apprehensive because what if those two things aren't solved by the end of the book?

Along with everyone else it seems, I am glad that she is finally on the ship of her own making. I am also enjoying the bits about the key oddly enough. I can't wait for it to catch up to September!

As for a favorite quote I love; "Men are so awfully fond of attributing women's work to their brothers!"

^I do love that quote. The rest of the book, though: ehhh. I've accepted that this book just isn't for me. That would be okay if I didn't like the world and the imaginative characters, but I do, so I'm cranky with the book for not appealing to me overall. Hah. I'll power through to the end since I'm almost done, but I probably won't be reading any more of this series. :-(
