On the whole "French letter" thingie (whoops, not a Freudian slip, I promise)...the French called condoms "English letters", no doubt due to the great love these two countries had (and still have) for each other. The letter bit, and I'm just guessing at this part, but I understood that they were packaged in small letter-like wrappings as these were the days before our normal sized letters...J
