Rebecca Packwood | 13 comments Smasher by Dick King Smith, is a great book for developing readers, with a longer story than usual but still keeping illustrations within the book to help the reader keep focused and follow the story line. The book is about a puppy who is born and is different from the others, and at first he doesn't get accepted as he doesn't really know how to act within a house as he is used to being kept outside in a barn and stable. He gets told off quite regularly by Mrs Buzzard and when he trashes the house she has enough of him, but Farmer Buzzard has quite the soft spot for him, as he tells Mrs Buzzard he has got rid of Smasher but he has really put him into a separate barn that she doesn't know of. Mrs Buzzard has to go away for a while so Farmer Buzzard sees his chance to train Smasher the dog and get him house trained so he is allowed back in! Whilst Smasher is sleeping he hears a sneeze which comes from a burglar and saves the Farmer's house from being robbed. This book would be great for 7/8 year olds who can develop their reading by reading this book.
It is also a good book to consider when thinking about SEND as Smasher looks different and acts different to all the other dogs, a lot of open ended questions can be arisen from this book.
