Yes, that's true. It's another reason to avoid vanity publishers if you are trying to publish because they take you under guise of helping you do all this to a professional quality and then give you the shoddiest job imaginable. The worst books I have seen are from vanity publishers.

except that it's not cast in iron. Or even jello. An author can do all three, in sequence, or even simultaneously, using indie or self for more niche stuff while still publishing traditionally.
