I use earbuds too. I normally only use one in whatever ear I am not lying on.

I always use earbuds which have an off button on the cord so it's really easy to turn off when I'm ready. I do that even when my husband is away. But that means I always am awake enough to turn it off & remove it. I wouldn't want to sleep all night with earbuds in.
I used to use an under-the-pillow speaker.....even for music. It wasn't the greatest but it got me through some difficult times.
I do this all the time. I let the book run all night on my ipad. I sometimes backtrack but mostly listen to lightweight novels and I have the volumn very low so that I don't pay too much attention to the book and have it keep me awake.Sometimes I do have NPR on but that's usually bad news and I don't want that to enter my brain and wake me.

I just got a new mp3 player. My old one passed away unexpectedly. So I am excited to load it up with a lot more audiobooks:)

Sort of tangential to the original post but... I tend to listen to documentaries when I want something to fall asleep to. I'm amazed at the many details I've learned over the years while falling off to sleep.
The ones that I find most suited to this are:
The Great Depression
New York (Ken Burns)
The Civil War (Ken Burns)
The War (Ken Burns's WWII doc)
Walking with Dinosaurs (Narrated by Kenneth Branaugh)
Mammals/The Ocean/Earth (Hell... anything with Attenborough narrating)
I also change this up ocassionally with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (The Colin Frick one) though Mrs. Bennet can be grating
I love listening at night. I usually listen to one of the Great Courses lectures. They are interesting but not so exciting that I get heavily involved and can't sleep. I'm not a fan of my iPod ear buds so would love to hear if anyone has any suggestions. I am currently using SleepPhones which I got off Amazon. It's basically flat earbuds in a fleece headband. They are more comfortable than the earbuds; however I am beginning to question the quality of them. I had to return the first pair after a few months because the sound would occasionally go out unless the connecting wire was in a specific position. Have had the second pair for five months but one side is already out so p only one speaker works. Would love to find a better alternative!

I love the Great Courses too! I don't like the earbuds either. I use a mini speaker. But I sleep alone so there is no one to annoy with the sound.
I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't listen to audiobooks when I want to sleep. They're a lifesaver!
I often listen to audio books or audio drama that I have already heard at bed time on my Nexus tablet or smartphone. It lessens the sounds or thing like the neighbors moving since they refuse to just do that a night when people are at work. I am liking the sleep timer that I can set on some apps like Audible and LibriVox apps.
