The others lived very long ago, and the books tell us as much. Then again, the birds in real life don't have a very long lifespan (I'm not entirely sure how long) so probably eras in gahool pass much faster than the way we understand them. Also, churches and castles were humanities most durable constructions during the Middle Ages, houses and other things had straw ceilings or made out of wood entirely. So it is logical that the building left are castles and churches (made of stone). So, very durable buildings and fast ages in bird POV, probably it was a long time for birds, but only between a period of 1000 to 2000 human years.
