My recent research for my next historical novel about courtesans of the Qinhuai district in Nanjing of the late Ming/early Qing dynasty (equivalent to the Yukaku or Hanamachi districts of Japan) has drawn me ever more deeply into the social and cultural backgrounds of that particular historical period (mid-17th century China).
For me, I’m enamored with the early 17th century. Lots of “foundings and startings” occurred. Like the founding of the Dutch East India Company in 1602, making the Dutch the most powerful trading nation in the world. And then there’s the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown in 1607. And Henry Hudson’s voyage to the New York area in 1609, which started a chain of events that would create one of the greatest cities on earth: NYC. What’s not to like? :) Of course, I may be biased because I’m writing my own historical fiction about this time period. But it was a fascinating time!

I love late ancient Rome when it was declining and the early Medieval era was dawning. My books are set in this time period. So much exciting history that's been 'a best kept secret' for historical writers. I'm thrilled to have discovered it especially the 5th century. :-)
