SOLVED. Biography/memoir of a Black man in the south [s]

Okay, I'm really being lame here. A friend of mine has recommended this book to me a few times and I always forget the name (we always seem to be drinking wine-maybe that's why!) I'm embarassed to ask her again so I'm hoping that you guys can solve this for me and then I don't have to look like a dope.

I believe she said the book is a memoir about a Black man growing up in the south. It made me think of Black Like Me but I know it's not that. I want to say the name is several words, with "in the" thrown in there somewhere. (I'm probably totally wrong on all these random things and it's going to make it that much harder for someone to figure out)

I know this isn't much to go on but if anyone has a clue I'd be so grateful!

Maybe Manchild in the Promised Land, by Claude Brown? Although that's about growing up in Harlem, not the South.

Might be Manchild in the Promised Land! That sounds vaugely familiar and I'm not surprised it's not set in the South, I was foggy on so many of the details, damn wine. Thanks so much Laura, I'll check it out.
