Would you be able to see a thestral?

No. I've lived quite a sheltered life in that respect. Both of my sets of grandparents are still alive. I'm obviously happy about that, but I'm worried that when I see death when I'm older, which I inevitably will, I will not cope as well as someone who has experienced a loved one dying when they're younger.
One thing I never understood about the thestrals was why Harry could only see them in fourth year if he saw his mother die when he was one?

Wow! Good point. I never thought about the fact that he should have always been able to see them.
Oh wow! I also never realized that!
I would be able to see them, as I saw my baby brother die. But thanks to God, he is now alive and well! (He drowned at age one)

I am very thankful that I would not be able to see them
(reminder: you can only see a thestral if you have seen death.)
