Hi Thalia!
Have you read The Morland Dynasty series by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles? I think the first book in the series is The Founding. Anyway, it looks at English history through the eyes of a fictional family, the Morlands. If you've read it, what did you think?

OK - I'm here, Rick - I've joined - I'll go over some of these posts during the weekend.Kinda' late at night here and I'll be going to bed.
Hi everyone!First off, thank you Rick for inviting me to join! I'm ashamed to say I don't think I even now who James Mason is (Be nice!!!), but I'd like to learn!
My name is Melanie, a 22 y.o. French and American law student living in Geneva(Switzerland),and I've been reading and rereading Conan Doyle and Christie since I was 12 (I've always LOVED Sherlock Holmes: and may I say that although I would never have pictured "my" Sherlock Holmes like that, and I still don't, I thoroughly enjoyed Robert Downey Jr.'s movie!)
I am naturally also a huge fan of Jane Austen and I read at least a book a day, between my law studies, my two part time jobs (I tutor 3 kids and am a P.A. in a financial company).. This looks like an awesome group I'm glad to be a part of!
Great book choices, Melanie! Many of my favorites, too!
Hello to all of the other new members, too! We are getting to be quite the international group! :)

Great English actor of British and American films, James Mason was born on May 15, 1909, Hudersfield, Yorkshire, England. He attended Marlborough and Cambridge, where he discovered acting on a lark and abandoned a planned career as an architect. Following work in stock companies, he joined the Old Vic under the guidance of Sir Tyrone Guthrie and of Alexander Korda, who gave Mason at least one small film role in 1933, but fired him a few days into shooting. Mason remained in the theatre becoming a prominent stage actor, meanwhile getting first small, then rapidly larger roles in "quota quickies", minor films made to accommodate laws mandating a certain percentage of films shown in Britain to be British-made. Mason's talent for playing protagonists of a decidedly hard-bitten or melancholy stripe brought him from these minor films to a position as one of Britain's major film stars of the Forties in such films as Odd Man Out and The Seventh Veil.
When, late in that decade, he came to America, he played somewhat more glamorous or heroic roles than he had been accustomed to in Britain, but he remained a dynamic and intelligent force on the screen. Some of his best films include Julius Caeser, North by Northwest, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth.
His tendency to take any job offered led him to have many unworthy credits on his resume, but throughout his career he remained a respected and powerful figure in the industry.
His mellifluous voice and an uncanny ability to suggest rampant emotion beneath a face of absolute calm made him a fascinating performer to watch. He died of a heart attack in 1984 at his home in Switzerland.

Hi everyone. I've just received a most gracious invitation to join and have accepted. I'm Nancy, and well, I read a LOT!
Hi all! My name is Michelle and just like most others here I adore books and am addicted to Goodreads. In the last year it's been my goal to read things outside my normal genre's and read those books I've always meant to read. I started out with War and Peace and the newest is Watchmen that I finished last night. I always like to have one longer, more difficult read going and right now that is Bleak House by Charles Dickens.
I'm new here as of yesterday. I'm Judith and, like many of the group members I believe, a book addict. I am a former H.S. English teacher and college professor, retired now. I majored in English in college and specialized in American Lit. For the last three years I've been dedicated to filling in the gaps of the classics I've somehow missed along the way. I recently read Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" and Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" as examples I'd avoided until now. I love the Brits second best to the Americans, but my devotion to both is true! Ford Maddox Ford, Woofe,Waugh,Doyle and P.D. James are among my favorite authors.
Welcome Nancy, Michelle & Judith! You've come to the right place for interesting discussions on all sorts of book-related topics! Someday maybe I'll get inspired to fill in the gaps in my reading, too. :)
Hi There All,My name is Charlotte and I have three small children and live in a small town in northern BC Canada. The children don't give me much time to read but living in a remote area helps with the time factor. Thanks Rick for the invite. Looking forward to discussing books with you guys. My goals this year is to finally finish Mansfield Park and read War and Peace. Otherwise I read random books and read the selected book from our 3D book club each month. I love reading and like to read different genres of books.

Hello! I am new to the group. I guess I should say that I prefer YA books as of late. But I have been reading so many I am ready for a change. It's just so much easier to go the YA section of the library as it isn't so overwhelming with the number and types of books available. I really need to find a few good "adult" books and thus get involved in a few genres where I could feel confident I was going to get a book I liked when I went to pick something out. Does that make sense?
I look forward to contributing and chatting with you all. :)
Rick, thank you for the invite. I am curious how you pick your members.

WELCOME TO THE GROUP travelmel!!
many members join by word of mouth- I first started this group as a tribute to my favorite actor- James mason- but somehow it exploded into a wonderful community of both readers and writers who enjoy sharing ideas and opinions and supporting each other when one has a new project coming out- I try to choose those I feel truly love reading- and enjoy diversity of thoughts and genres!
so glad to have you in our Group!

Hello to all, my name is Hester and I love to read. I read just about everything except for cheap romance and chick lit. You always read my reviews on my online blog at http://hesterprine.blogspot.com/ Stop by and feel free to leave comments.
This looks like a fun group. I like quite a variety of books: mysteries ranging from cozy (including cats & dogs) to paranormal to hard-boiled; thrillers; YA & children's middle-grade; and fantasy (especially urban fantasy). I'm retired now, so I have plenty of time to read!
Hello all, my name is Lisa. Thanks for the invite Rick. I read pretty much anything except romance novels. Currently I am reading "The Eyre Affair" by Jasper Fforde.

welcome to Sheila and Lisa
Lisa - just today- we have been having a discussion on Jasper Fforde- and I had not read him before- but he is VERY popular witn many in our Group-
I was told that I should read Jane Eyre before reading The Eyre Affair as there are references to it.
do you find this to be the case?

I love your name! My friends nicknamed me Jazzbelle...
Anyway, I'm Jessica and I'll be a college student next year. I devoured books when I was younger, but lately, I haven't found the time to give books the attention I would like to give them.
I have great interest in a variety of genres -- mystery, romance, psychological thrillers, etc.
But I absolutely love books that manage to define the minutia in human life -- those aspects of life that are so natural, we don't realize how crucial they are to painting the setting of a book. It is for this characteristic that I am currently attempting to read Proust. (Along with Ayn Rand and Tolstoy...etc...)

You don't have to read "Jane Eyre" first, but it would help with some of the references. There are quite a few other literary characters that are referenced I had never heard of, so I may be reading some other books so I understand the inside jokes.
